"The concept of a 'flat classroom' is based on the constructivist principle of a multi-modal learning environment that is student-centered and a level playing field for teacher to student and student to teacher interaction.The first project was founded in 2006 by two classroom teachers, Julie Lindsay (then in Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Vicki Davis (Camilla, Georgia) and quickly received recognition for the innovative approach of knitting two classrooms together for common authentic research and production of meaningful, unique multimedia.

This innovative program combines the passion, connectivity, and resources of Generation Y with the solutions of grassroots social entrepreneurs around the world to create change on a global scale. Young people-anywhere in the United States-can start an NGC Team on their high school campus. Once formed, teams select one of NGC's global partner projects and set goals around three main objectives: 1) educate their community about the challenges faced by their partner project, 2) advocate on behalf of a pressing global issue, and 3) raise the financial resources necessary to effect real change.
