This site combines the best of a thesaurus and a concordancer. A word search produces loads of combinations in actual usage, with a red or green bar to indicate good and bad connotations. An alternatives link shows other words that can be substituted. Should be a nice accessory to non-native more advanced writers. Also connects to Wordle, so that students can see visually what kinds of usage are most likely.

Called "A collaborative rubric toolkit," the search engine will help you find a pre-created rubric, and has K-6 rubric sam[les for assessing student writing as well.

Another way to use tagging. if it can be found in a search engine, you will see it displayed on a visual wall, as in this example from the Webheads in Action: http://spezify.com/#/webheads Makes using tags of all kinds even more important. Be sure your students select really unique tags. (In this example, there is a YouTube video and other materials related to Spider-Man, whose fans are also called "Webheads.") Extra nice feature--click an image to expand. If you click elsewhere, the video or whatever will stop playing.

Got to Time.com, select the pull-down menu for Videos, and use the Search engine to find "10 Questions." There are hundreds of these--questions for famous people, newsmakers, politicians, etc. Great way to examine cultural assumptions, explore current events, etc. Teachers will have to develop the lessons, but you see and hear the interlocutors in natural language. Recommended by Russell Stannard.

Similar to Bubblr, but this app produces a book-lik presentation, rather than a comic strip format. You add two pictures per open book page, and add text as a subtitle. Good for projects with students' own photos uploaded to Flickr, or pictures found in a search.
