Welcome to EcoLibrary! Students in my classes and workshops - ranging from college age to kindergarten - learn best when we use a lot of photographs and other rich teaching materials. EcoLibrary allows students and teachers to freely use materials that support learning about ecology, conservation biology, and the environment. EcoLibrary currently contains several hundred annotated photographs that illustrate key concepts in these fields, and as the site grows we will add maps, sounds, panoramas, and interactive exercises.

Much like The Material World, this book showcases children from around the world and their bedrooms. This is an excerpt form the book that is large enough to engender student dialogue.

Interesting site..good perhaps for ideas or use with those students who become home-bound. This environmental science laboratory course is specifically designed for practical applications of science using readily available household materials. This course provides the learner with firsthand experience of important scientific aspects of environmental studies, including air quality, ecological concerns, waste-management issues, and energy consumption and conservation.

The left panels show the absolute number of species whose populations have declined in each region; the right panels show the percentage of species that declined in each region. The top panels include all land vertebrates (amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals), whereas the bottom panels represent only bird species. Project or distribute the image to engage students. The downloadable Educator Materials PDF, which includes background information, graph interpretation and discussion questions, and the Student Handout, which includes the image and background information, have been remediated to comply with Section 508 of the National Rehabilitation Act for accessibility and can be used with screen readers.

Awesome correlation to the Village of 100 (or 1000) idea for environmental science!!

The Story of Stuff is one of the most watched environmental-themed online movies of all time. Its animated and accessible to all levels of students. This is a great introduction to Environmental Justice, and what students can do to get involved through action.

I totally agree! I got to meet Annie Leonard at SXSW-Eco in Austin, TX last October after her keynote speech. She encouraged me to take advantage of the free teaching material on the project website. There's so much great "stuff" on there!

Enormous amount of instructional material for teachers and students. Compiled by Sarah Bordenstein, Marine Biological Laboratory The Winogradsky Column is an excellent activity, specifically for grades 5 - 12, to demonstrate the growth of microorganisms. As a result of this activity, students will: learn about the metabolic diversity of prokaryotes, applying terms such as phototroph, chemotroph, autotroph, and heterotroph.

I use this with Earth Science and Nonrenewables. I really like the breakdown of minerals used in building. Lots of great data for usage around the world.
