Refugees and migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East have been appearing at Europe’s borders in rising numbers, but more commonly in Mediterranean countries like Spain and Italy than in Britain.
Last year, hundreds of African migrants died when their boat capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa. Two small Spanish enclaves in Morocco are frequently overrun by Africans seeking asylum. And the war in Syria has led to another tide of refugees.
The influx has led to questions about whether the European Union needs a more comprehensive strategy to deal with the migrants at its borders.
The interaction of culture and the movement of energy and people affect each other and the physical environment. What geographers do is study the interaction of the major elements that give character to a place. So when one is doing geography, one is trying to understand the value of places.
