Obviously this site is biased (basically the opposite of the NRA), but it seems like they have some pretty good stats. And if you want to look up gun laws by state: http://smartgunlaws.org/gun-laws-matter-2012-understanding-the-link-between-weak-laws-and-gun-violence/ And you can just click on the state and it'll give a summary of that state's gun laws.

US Gun Deaths in 2010 & 2013 - 0 views

  •
As of June 2013, 4233 people have been killed by guns. The Southeast, which has relatively looser gun laws, contributes 37% (vs. the Northeast, which is more densely populated and all contributes 17%). Using the US mortality data from the World Health Organization, researchers calculated that approximately 185,866 years have been stolen (so far in 2013 alone).

Despite the fact that there have been many instances where our policies have been inadequate (cue Alex's research), legislation has made few changes on the issue of gun control. Measures have been taken to require background checks and limit types of weapons (such as semi-automatic weapons), but there is still much room for improvement.

As for the future of gun control, I think an important step would be for Connecticut Senate Bill No. 1160 to be implemented on a national level. (This would be a good turning point in our video--it was enacted April 3, 2013 and we can use that to transition to what we think the future of gun control should look like.)

The law (which only applies to the state of Connecticut) prohibits the sale of large magazines, and requires all gun sales to include a background check, which consists of both criminal and mental checks. It also takes certain precautionary measures.

There have been many instances throughout the history of the United States where its policies toward gun regulation have been inadequate due to resistance caused by the deeply ingrained ideal of the "right to bear arms"; this has caused numerous tragedies that stem from the accessibility of firearms. Measures have been taken to require background checks and limit types of weapons, however because these laws are loosely enforced, they are largely ineffective. While stricter gun control will not completely eliminate violence in the United States, there is a clear correlation between stricter gun regulation and lower homicide rates due to firearms. Therefore, stronger regulations and means to enforce them, must be put in place to avoid future disasters.

A Land Without Guns: How Japan Has Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths - Max Fisher - ... - 0 views

  • In 2008, the U.S. had over 12 thousand firearm-related homicides. All of Japan experienced only 11, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. And that was a big year: 2006 saw an astounding two, and when that number jumped to 22 in 2007, it became a national scandal. By comparison, also in 2008, 587 Americans were killed just by guns that had discharged accidentally.

I think it might be important for us to have each other's phone numbers and emails so we can contact each other if need be. Also, maybe Google Drive will be a useful tool if we all have one?
