  • Detroit’s gun homicide rate (35.9) is just a bit less than El Salvador (39.9)
  • Gun murder in Newark (25.4) and Miami (23.7) is comparable to Colombia (27.1).
  • Washington D.C. (19) has a higher rate of gun homicide than Brazil (18.1).

  • Baltimore’s rate (29.7) is not too far off that of Guatemala (34.8).
  • Atlanta’s rate (17.2) is about the same as South Africa (17).
  • The pattern is staggering. A number of U.S. cities have gun homicide rates in line with the most deadly nations in the world.
  • If it were a country, New Orleans (with a rate 62.1 gun murders per 100,000 people) would rank second in the world.

    Look at map and italics under map. The map compares gun homicides in some American cities to entire countries worldwide. We need more guns to help protect people from statistics.

    As of June 2013, 4233 people have been killed by guns. The Southeast, which has relatively looser gun laws, contributes 37% (vs. the Northeast, which is more densely populated and all contributes 17%). Using the US mortality data from the World Health Organization, researchers calculated that approximately 185,866 years have been stolen (so far in 2013 alone).

    Obviously this site is biased (basically the opposite of the NRA), but it seems like they have some pretty good stats. And if you want to look up gun laws by state: http://smartgunlaws.org/gun-laws-matter-2012-understanding-the-link-between-weak-laws-and-gun-violence/ And you can just click on the state and it'll give a summary of that state's gun laws.
