I can't believe Pliny actually taught his son Pliny the younger. It would be kinda cool to have your uncle to teach you. But then again you coulldn't act up without getting seriously yelled at. Why didn't he just get his son a regular tutor or teacher?
  •

Its not a surprise to me that pliny died young. Mostly because he is a male. Most Roman males only lived to about 29 and women 31. this was probably the reason he died because of his aqe

  • Agrippina the Younger has been described by the ancient and modern sources as ‘ruthless, ambitious, violent and domineering’. She was a beautiful and reputable woman and according to Pliny the Elder, she had a double canine in her upper right jaw, a sign of good fortune. Many ancient historians accuse Agrippina of poisoning Emperor Claudius, though accounts vary.[2]

Agrippina is a head strong women. She basically grew up with royalty, so she wanted her son Nero to be a part of that. Claudius who was emperor at the time did not date anymore ever since his wife cheated on him. So Agrippina sdeuced him so her son Nero can be emperor. But he had two children. Claudius became ill and ended up dying. Rumor has it that Agrippina poisioned him. As the eldest Nero became the emperor thanks to his mother Agrippina! ( Not a good way to get what you want you think?)

Agrippina died in a horrible way. She was paying more attention to her step-son Britanicus since Nero was acting out, so Nero got upset. She tried to kill her. The first way he tried to kill her was the she gave her a boat and then when she was on the boat the boat sank! She was so determined that she swam back to land. Nero was furious so when she was at her own she sent guards to go and kill her in any way possible. They were gonna cut her in many pieces but she said no and pointed to the place where Nero came from to signify what a mistake she made.

As I said before Agrippina grew up in royalty. So she wanted a piece of it as well. When she made Nero emperor she tried to get in the popularity too. For example, Nero AND Agrippina were on the coin. Nero did not like that she was taking over everything.

Nero sent what you call a "hitman" because he didnt like his mother anymore. He got tired of her being there even though she got him to where he was (which was being EMPORER).
  • His reign included a successful war and negotiated peace with the Parthian Empire (58–63), the suppression of the British revolt (60–61) and improving relations with Greece. The First Roman-Jewish War (66–70) started during his reign.
  • and as an early persecutor of Christians. This view is based upon the main surviving sources for Nero's reign—Tacitus, Suetonius and Cassius Dio. Few surviving sources paint Nero in a favorable light.[6] Some sources, though, including those mentioned above, portray him as an emperor who was popular with the common Roman people, especially in the East.[7] The study of Nero is problematic as some modern historians question the reliability of ancient sources when reporting on Nero's tyrannical acts

  • Lucius' mother was Agrippina the Younger, who was great-granddaughter to Caesar Augustus and his wife Scribonia through their daughter Julia the Elder and her husband Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Agrippina's father, Germanicus, was grandson to Augustus's wife, Livia, on one side and to Mark Antony and Octavia on the other. Germanicus' mother Antonia Minor, was a daughter of Octavia Minor and Mark Antony. Octavia was Augustus' second elder sister. Germanicus was also the adoptive son of Tiberius. A number of ancient historians accuse Agrippina of murdering her third husband, emperor Claudius.

  • All surviving sources, except Pliny the Elder, characterize Caligula as insane. However it is not known whether they are speaking figuratively or literally. Additionally, given Caligula's unpopularity among the surviving sources, it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. Recent sources are divided in attempting to ascribe a medical reason for Caligula's behavior, citing as possibilities encephalitis, epilepsy or meningitis. The question of whether or not Caligula was insane remains unanswered. Philo of Alexandria, Josephus and Seneca also state Caligula was insane, but describe this madness as a personality trait that came through experience.[42][129][130] Seneca states that Caligula became arrogant, angry and insulting once becoming emperor and uses his personality flaws as examples his readers can learn from.[131] According to Josephus, power made Caligula incredibly conceited and led him to think he was a god.[42] Philo of Alexandria reports that Caligula became ruthless after nearly dying of his illness in 39.[132] Juvenal reports he was given a magic potion that drove him insane. Suetonius said that Caligula suffered from "falling sickness," or Epilepsy, when he was young.[133] Modern historians have theorized that Caligula lived with a daily fear of seizures.[134] Despite swimming being a part of imperial education, Caligula could not swim.[135] Epileptics are encouraged not to swim because light reflecting off water can induce seizures.[136] Additionally, Caligula reportedly talked to the full moon.[69] Epilepsy was also long associated with the moon.[137] Some modern historians think that Caligula suffered from hyperthyroidism.[138] This diagnosis is mainly attributed to Caligula's irritability and his "stare" as described by Pliny the Elder.

Then he put his favorite horse and make it apart of the senate. Now every meeting the horse went to. And in the circus Maximus he posiend the other horses so he can win. And not only that he became a gladiator. This man had to see a phycologist./
  • Caligula's actions as Emperor were described as being especially harsh to the Senate, the nobility and the equestrian order.[106] According to Josephus, these actions led to several failed conspiracies against Caligula.[107] Eventually, a successful murder was planned by officers within the Praetorian Guard led by Cassius Chaerea.[108] The plot is described as having been planned by three men, but many in the Senate, army and equestrian order were said to have been informed of it and involved in it.[109] According to Josephus, Chaerea had political motivations for the assassination.[110] Suetonius sees the motive in Caligula calling Chaerea derogatory names.[111] Caligula considered Chaerea effeminate because of a weak voice and for not being firm with tax collection.[112] Caligula would mock Chaerea with watchwords like "Priapus" and "Venus".[113]

  • Following an auspicious start to his reign, Caligula fell seriously ill in October AD 37. Philo is the main historian to describe this illness,[37] though Cassius Dio mentions it in passing.[38] Philo states that Caligula's increased bath-taking, drinking, and sex after becoming emperor caused him to become ill.[39] It was said that the entire empire was paralyzed with sadness and sympathy over Caligula’s affliction.[40] Caligula completely recovered from this illness, but Philo highlights Caligula's near-death experience as a turning point in his reign.[41] Josephus characterizes Caligula as a noble and moderate ruler for the first two years of his rule before a turn for the worse occurred.[42] Shortly after recovering from his illness, Caligula had several loyal individuals killed who had promised their lives for his in the event of a recovery.[43] Caligula had his wife banished and his father-in-law, Marcus Silanus, and his cousin, Tiberius Gemellus, were forced to commit suicide.[43][44]

  • He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Lucius' death in 169. He was the last of the "Five Good Emperors", and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. His tenure was marked by wars in Asia against a revitalized Parthian Empire, and with Germanic tribes along the Limes Germanicus into Gaul and across the Danube. A revolt in the East, led by Avidius Cassius who previously fought under Lucius Verus against the Parthians, failed.
  • The major sources for the life and rule of Marcus Aurelius are patchy and frequently unreliable. The biographies contained in the Historia Augusta claim to be written by a group of authors at the turn of the fourth century, but are in fact written by a single author (referred to here as "the biographer") from the later fourth century (c. 395)
  • Marcus' family originated in Ucubi, a small town southeast of Córdoba in Iberian Baetica. The family rose to prominence in the late first century AD. Marcus' great-grandfather Marcus Annius Verus (I) was a senator and (according to the Historia Augusta) ex-praetor; in 73–74 his grandfather Marcus Annius Verus (II) was made a patrician.[10][notes 2] Verus' elder son—Marcus Aurelius' father—Marcus Annius Verus (III) married Domitia Lucilla.[13] Lucilla was the daughter of the patrician P. Calvisius Tullus Ruso and the elder Domitia Lucilla. The elder Domitia Lucilla had inherited a great fortune (described at length in one of Pliny's letters) from her maternal grandfather and her paternal grandfather by adoption.[14] The younger Lucilla would acquire much of her mother's wealth, including a large brickworks on the outskirts of Rome—a profitable enterprise in an era when the city was experiencing a construction boom.[15]
  • According to the notoriusly unreliable Historia Augusta, he is the great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson of Triumvir Pompey the Great through his daughter Pompeia Magna. His paternal grandmother Rupilia was the great granddaughter of Scribonia (daughter of Lucius Scribonius Libo consul 16) , who was herself the great granddaughter of Pompey the Great on both her parents side. This makes Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, the only Princeps to have been directly related t
  • the son-in-law and rival of Triumvir Julius Caesar.
  • In 127, at the age of six, Marcus was enrolled in the equestrian order on the recommendation of Emperor Hadrian. Though this was not completely unprecedented, and other children are known to have joined the order, Marcus was still unusually young. In 128, Marcus was enrolled in the priestly college of the Salii.
  • On 30 November 147, Faustina gave birth to a girl, named Domitia Faustina. It was the first of at least fourteen children (including two sets of twins) she would bear over the next twenty-three years. The next day, 1 December, Pius gave Marcus the tribunician power and the imperium—authority over the armies and provinces of the emperor. As tribune, Marcus had the right to bring one measure before the senate after the four Pius could introduce. His tribunican powers would be renewed, with Pius', on 10 December 147.[118]

Constantine II (emperor) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 3 views

  • Following the death of his father in 337, Constantine II became emperor jointly with his brothers Constantius II and Constans. After the division of the empire, made by the three brothers in September of the same year in Pannonia, he ruled over Gaul, Britannia and Hispania. He was involved in the struggle between the different Christian streams. The Western portion of the empire leaned towards Catholicism and against Arianism, and Constantine freed Athanasius and allowed him to return to Alexandria. This action also put some burden on Constantius II, who was a supporter of Arianism.

Cicero was a famous Roman statesman. He was born six years before Julius Caesar. They were in politics at the same time. Cicero was from a wealthy family. He was educated as a lawyer. He served in the Senate. He served as elected Consul, the highest position in government under the Republic. He was a wonderful speaker. When Cicero spoke, people listened. Cicero said about government, "In a kingdom, only the king has many rights. Kings can be wise and just. But rule by one person can easily become tyranny." When Julius Caesar entered the city of Rome with his army, and declared himself dictator, Cicero said: "I see no reason for ... being alarmed except the fact that, once departure has been made from the law, everything is uncertain; and nothing can be guaranteed as to the future which depends upon another man's will, not to say caprice. When Caesar declared himself dictator for life, his action was in direction violation of the principals of a constitutional republic." The day Julius Caesar was assassinated, Cicero was there. But he was not one of Julius Caesar's attackers. Cicero lived at time when Rome was changing from a constitutional republic to a dictatorship, ruled by emperors. Cicero fought in the way he knew best, with words and speeches, about the importance of keeping a constitutional government. His words did not fall on dead ears, but the Senate had lost nearly all its power

Cicero is generally perceived to be one of the most versatile minds of ancient Rome. He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary, distinguishing himself as a linguist, translator, and philosopher

Maxentius WAS a pagan. He hated Constantine. In the battle he died in Maxentius had a plan that once all of Constantine's army gets on the bridge they will lot the bridge loose. And since they are wearing armor they will sink in obviously will not survive. But, Maxentius's plan backfired and he and his army fell into the water. That was ironic because Dia, the christian scribe said to Constantine the day before the battle that if he puts the sign of the Christians they will Conquer. Which they did. He seems not to have served in any important military or administrative position during Diocletian's and his father's reign, though. Early (the exact date is unknown) he married Valeria Maximilla, the daughter of Galerius. He had two sons, Valerius Romulus (ca. 295 – 309) and an unknown one.

Although with Constantine and Maxentius two sons of emperors were available, they were left out from the new tetrarchy, and Severus and Maximinus Daia were appointed Caesars. Some sources (Lactantius, Epitome) state that Galerius hated Maxentius and used his influence on Diocletian that Maxentius be ignored in the succession; maybe Diocletianus also thought that he was not qualified for the military duties of the imperial office. Maxentius retired to an estate some miles from Rome.

    • saul PAULINO

Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius was born around AD 279 as the son of Maximian and his Syrian wife Eutropia. He was made a senator and even was given Galerius' daughter Valeria Maximilla in marriage in an attempt to confirm his status of the son of an emperor. But other than these honours he received nothing. No consulship to groom him for power, no military command. First he suffered the indignity together with Constantine of being passed over as Maximian and Diocletian both resigned in AD 305, when they both had to watch the relative unknowns of Severus II and Maximinus II Daia accede to what they saw as their rightful places. Then at the death of Constantius Chlorus in AD 306 Constantine was granted the rank of Caesar, leaving Maxentius out in the cold

What I ment by that was that Maxentius once had to fight against Constantine. His idea was to make the bridge fall when all of his army was on it. Pretty simple. But Maxentius ebded being the one falling into the water with his army. They were all wearing armor obviously so they could not get up. So they sink right down. Constantine won and Maxentius died. :l

In 408, Stilicho (after forcing the Roman Senate to pay 4,000 pounds of gold)[2] was arrested and executed by the order of Honorius, probably because of a court conspiracy against the Arian general. The Visigoths under their King Alaric I invaded Italy in 408, besieged Rome, and extorted from the city a ransom of 5,000 pounds of gold, 30,000 pounds of silver, 4,000 silken tunics, 3,000 hides dyed scarlet, and 3,000 pounds of pepper)[3], while Honorius in Ravenna did nothing.

Honorius wasn't a real leader. He was more like a follower and because of his not very wise descions of his generals the western roman empire fell. Rome needed a strong and wise leader not a kid who will always be asking for help when he's the one that's suppose to help. Also a leader that can control his own situations , and do what he thinks is best for rome.
  • To counter Priscus, Honorius tried to negotiate with Alaric. Alaric withdrew his support for Priscus in 410, but the negotiations with Honorius broke down. Alaric again entered Italy and sacked Rome.
    • alexa puntiel

Alaric just asked for some land for his people. They did need land to function, to live, and to grow their crops. I didn't think it was too much to ask for. All they wanted was the romans to treat them as their equals . Mostly it's the general's fault for trying to kill Alaric's troop and him just because of what happened in the past. Now for that stupid mistake Alaric and his men thought the emperor has betrayed him for the third time.
    • alexa puntiel

Honorius wasn't very wise. Asking your senate about what to do? Uh, no not a very smart thing to do because this is what YOU want for the empire . No one else. The choices Honorius made was why the western roman empire fell. He didn't take charge nor did he act like a leader.
  • The most notable event of his reign was the assault and Sack of Rome on August 24 410 by the Visigoths under Alaric.
    • alexa puntiel

Sack means to to rob, or burn down. That's exactly what alaric an his men were planning on doing. It's what Rome gets for not trying to accepet the barbarins , and for killing their people. The emperor wanted to negoaite ,but let's say some people can hold a gruge for years , and takes matters in their own hands to get revegne.
    • alexa puntiel

During the sack of Rome Honorius' sister was taken by Alaric's men as houstche or captive. The sack of Rome was to me a terrible sight. I guess that's how it was back then. We learn from their mistakes , and make better choices unlike Honorius.

  • Much of what is described as typically Roman technology, as opposed to that of the Greeks, comes directly from the Etruscan civilization, which was thriving to the North when Rome was just a small kingdom.
