Education Should Be About Building Democratic Citizens, Not Compliant Workers - 7 views

  •
While the article is about South Africa, many of it's points ring true for America. Education, when you think about it in the deepest manner, is not really about Education; it's about proving you'd be a good worker, and not much else. But I'm curious to see what others think.
  •
I agree with the article about how schools should focus on building democratic citizens, instead of just good workers. Young people need to know their rights and how they can impact the country, and some places don't do a good job teaching children those things. I've personally learned a lot about my rights in government class, so I think our school is doing a good job.
  •
I believe that the education system in America is mainly about passing more than it is about learning. I feel like I'm working a job and the assignments that I finish are just to get the job done. However, I believe that when students actual learn, understand, and are amazed by different topics, that is the true point of education. In all, while this article was about South Africa, it shows how we shouldn't be focusing on being a good worker but how we should be focusing on becoming better citizens.

Linda Brown dies; she was at center of Brown v. Board of Education desegregation case -... - 0 views

  •
"Brown was 9 years old in 1951 when her father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her at Sumner Elementary School, then an all-white school near her Topeka home. When the school blocked her enrollment her father sued the Topeka Board of Education. Four similar cases were combined with Brown's complaint and presented to the Supreme Court as Oliver L. Brown et al v. Board of Education of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, et al."
  •
I remember growing up in the 50's in Phoenix and all you could see were signs of segregation, especially in the service areas. Restaurants, service stations and the like had various signs reading "no service to coloreds" or "whites only" and this was the accepted norm. No one thought other-wise. Glad these days are over or are they really?

Nevada, Massachusetts teacher slayings hurt schools as safe havens - CNN.com - 3 views

  •
"Teacher slayings in Nevada and Massachusetts this week are the latest examples of how educators feel schools are less of a traditional safe haven, especially from gun violence that killed one of the instructors, an education firm says."

I think that all school teachers like the ones in Texas should be able to have guns in their classrooms.
  •
What is wrong with the world that 12 and 14 year olds would even start to think about these kind of things.
  •
Hope no gun in the class room and everywhere cause is danger for peoples.
  •
This is crazy now killings start at a young age wow, 12 and 14 year olds should be thinking about hanging out with friends and stuff like that not killing people...were did the world go crazyily wrong!?
  •
OH! I don't want to do that all school classroom have gun, if have it every one be crazy and killed each other. but hey Sarah i know right young age want to stat with gun and hang out with they friend and kill people maybe they don't have freedom that why they do it. Do you think that?

Education and Child Policy | Cato Institute - 2 views

  •
I think there are some things the school or parents have the right to do. The parents have the right to send them to whatever school they and their child choose. The school has the right to restrict the child from doing certain things that could result in a code of conduct brake. According to the government, they say a child must attend school until they are 18 and are considered an adult. I believe that is all the government should be allowed to do. It's then up to the student to continued their education or go into the workforce.
  •
I think that the government's power should be to help people get an education, but it's up to the parents and students to decide where to go and if they want to go on for more schooling. For some jobs, college might not help as much as a trade school, and that's a decision for the parents and student to decide.

Teen Pregnancy Rates in Rural Areas - Educational Problem? - 0 views

  •
Education does get taken away, once you ave a baby.

I like this post Cause it makes you think about the causes of becoming pregnant When your still in school. Like the girl in the reading that had plans to go to school for 4 years and didn't because she had a child.
  •
Teen pregnancy is a great deal and seemingly popular. For instance the teen mom show which doesn't show consequences of pregnancy it almost glorifies the fact those girls are pregnant. Im not saying its totally wrong to get pregnant but its not the smartest choice a teen girl could make.
  •
Well some teen mom's do go back school after having their baby because their education is still important to them so they try to make an effort on finishing school whatever way they can.
  •
Just because you get pregnant doesn't mean your life is going to go downhill, many girls get pregnant, become single mothers, and still graduate high school, sometimes a year early and get a full time job and raise their child.
  •
Yeah true Jamie, But I disagree that its okay because most of the population of teen girls having babies think its a new accessory and are unfit to support it. A part time job at taco bell is not enough to support a family.

This Country Just Abolished College Tuition Fees | ThinkProgress - 1 views

  •
" Higher education is now free throughout the country, even for international students. Yesterday, Lower Saxony became the last of seven German states to abolish tuition fees, which were already extremely low compared to those paid in the United States."
  •
I think it'd be wonderful if the US was able to do this. It'd open up so many more opportunities to students. Maybe not completely free, but if America could reduce the general cost of college it'd be wonderful.

Obama announces education help for unemployed - 0 views

  •
I think it's great that people that are unemployed are getting help, but you can't make people too comfortable not having to work for money or they never will. There are people that work hard and could get more money from the government by doing nothing. Governmental programs for unemployment and low income families have become too relaxed. People rely too much on the government; they should support themselves.

Apple Education - 4 views

  •
This I think will revolutionize the textbook industry. Textbooks for high schools run close to $100, Apple able to sell digital copies for $15 is simple amazing. Schools might now adapt iPads and save money in the long run on text books. Also iBook Authors could change the book industry the way that iTunes changed the music industry. We will have to give all of these new services a year and then we will see if Apple can dominate another major industry.
  •
Yes Brice! I think this will change a lot in the education world.

ALHS students at the city council - 43 views

Regardless of where you end up on this issue, it is good to see young people taking part in government for our own community.

I can't believe they say were too young to understand. Just because were in high school we too young. its not right.
  •
I am proud of Emily for standing up for what she wanted. Not many people would be brave enough to do something like that..
  •
i think that its really brave of emily to stand up for what she wants and thinks that is the best. Not a lot of people would do it. But she is standing up for others and her opinion.
  •
I understand where he is coming from saying high schoolers are too young to understand this. This topic is all about money, where it is coming from, how much money is needed, how much they will get from it. We do not know what goes on behind the scenes of this deals. Maybe instead of saying we are too young he should of said we are uninformed.
  •
I like what Brice said, "we are just uninformed."
  •
I hate to say it but i have this intense urge to slap City Council member Matt Walsh...what because we are young we automatically don't understand? More like we have more on our minds then politics and gaining support by being popular with business owners.
  •
we have the right to say what we need to say. People have the right to say that they should not be in a public place or anywhere.
  •
I also think its good that students are trying to make good points on why they shouldnt own the MAC. There taking a part in this and trying to stop it. But will it help? We will see later on....
  •
If he has enough gumption to tell Emily that he is disappointed in her for collecting signatures from uninformed student then he should have enough knowledge to know that we won't know whats going on if we aren't educated on this topic and that it is the generations above us job to educate us and pass on what they have learned to the younger generation. So if he is disappointed in Emily then he should also be disappointed in himself for not doing his job.

State, local results differ in annual Youth Straw Poll | Education | nonpareilonline.com - 4 views

  •
Hey it's us... we're famous! It was interesting to see our numbers next to TJ as a city comparison. The state totals would seem to indicate a Trump win for Iowa, even though CB leans Biden. We will see soon who is right.
  •
i feel like a lot of people lean towards Biden more because of influence from social media. high school kids aren't actually doing their research and coming up with their own opinions
  •
I agree with Carmella because younger kids tend to believe anything they see without digging into the actual facts and doing their own research. Younger kids also tend to follow trends and supporting Biden was close to becoming a trend.

Nearly 9,000 Florida Children Diagnosed With Coronavirus in Two Weeks as Schools Reopen - 4 views

  •
"Shortly after the order was issued, the Florida Education Association filed a lawsuit saying that the order defied recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on safely reopening schools."
  •
I think we opened the schools to early. This is a great example of why. No matter how many precautions we take into effect to keep the schools and people inside safe, we still don't know enough about this virus to be able to fully be safe. In the artical it says "Across the different age groups listed in the pediatric report, there are 17,311 confirmed cases among Florida children between 14 and 17." In the highschools, thats the age group in our highschools, and that is the group that is mostly getting the virus. It's scary to think about getting sick when you have other family to worry about if they get it.

Pushback on Obama's plan to stem gun violence - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
"President Barack Obama on Wednesday proposed background checks on all gun sales and bans on military style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines as part of a package of steps to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown school massacre last month."
  •
if its for the sake of students going to school and being able to be educated in a safe environment then i agree with his plan
  •
No matter what you do to regulate guns, the person that wants to rampage a bunch of people is going to do whatever they can to get a hold of a gun.
