"FireFly" spaceships to begin exploring asteroids in 2015 - 2 views

  •
Asteroid-mining company Deep Space Industries has just announced plans to launch a fleet of "FireFly" spacecraft as soon as 2015. Their mission? Find asteroids, rich with valuable metals, that could aid in humanity's colonization of space.
  •
I think it's really cool that they're taking the next step, and figuring out how they could possibly sustain life in space.
  •
It will be interesting to see if Deep Space succeeds in mining asteroids. I think it's a great idea, but I would like to know how long they project it will take to mine materials and bring them back to Earth.

Paul rips big government in farewell - The Hill's Video - 0 views

  •
"Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) delivered a blistering farewell speech on the House floor in which he ripped the drastic tilt of the U.S. toward expanded government, a devalued currency, persistent wars and the constant erosion of personal freedoms."
  •
If Ron Paul knew when to shut up he would have been president. Instead he makes a completely good point then keeps talking and it makes him sound crazy.
  •
I think that a 16 page speech is a little much, even for a farewell speech. I do not think that it was very smart of him to bash on the government so much. The government is not at its best point but he is making it sound like it is the worst. Casey is right, Ron Paul did make a good point though.

5 things we learned from the presidential debate - CNN.com - 2 views

  •
"By most accounts, Republican challenger Mitt Romney was the clear winner of Wednesday's first debate with President Barack Obama. Romney engaged the incumbent while Obama looked down at his lectern. The challenger was a more forceful debater while Obama appeared less than engaged." Here are five things we learned on Wednesday"
  • ...4 more comments...
  •
I agree, Mitt Romney was the clear winner. I watched the entire live debate at home and Mitt Romney was on fire. He was very prepared, but it didn't seem scripted. At the beginning of the show it explained how all debates are very detailed in their scripts, even with random comments to their opponent. He was very engaged in the conversation and stayed on the different topics and specifically pointed out his differences between what he and Obama were saying. It was a very interesting debate. The both had a lot to say, but over all, Romney was at the top of his game while Obama was a little out of it and didn't seem quite as interested.
  •
People keep saying Mitt Romney won but I honestly don't think he did I am not judging them on how well they speak I am judging on who has the beliefs I do and who will do what I believe right for this country and in that case I believe Obama "won" the debate because no one can really win the debate granted one can look more prepared or more interested and I'll agree that Romney did do that but he didn't say the things I wanted to hear from the future president Obama did
  •
In all honesty, from what the article mentioned, Obama did not say much to discredit Romney. I'm wondering if Obama is going to hold out and save the infamous 47% mark, vague political outline of his plan, and any other anti-Romney ideas until a later date within this election. Also, Rainie, as for not being able to win a debate, I disagree for the most part, but not in full. Political ideals fall into, "Who wins a political debate." The debate itself, is just getting people to realize what policies they believe would work. This is one situation that I agree, there can be no winner. But as to most debates, there are clear winners.
  •
Exactly I agree with most of that Payton, I was specifically talking about this debate. I don't need them to say everything in that one debate because I don't just listen to the debate to get my information I listen to them on just regular speeches and articles all that good stuff and out of all of that not just the debate I think people should make their decision. Just my opinion
  •
I have watched other things like speeches and looked online. But this post is strictly just about the debate and to me Mitt Romney won. Now, I understand there is no actual winner and I'm not saying you guys are wrong, but going by just this debate, Romney without a doubt won.
  •
Alex, if there is no actual winner than how did he win? that's contradicting yourself. I agree that Romney presented himself better at the debate but outside of the debate I believe Obama has and you believe Romney has we are just going to have to agree to disagree

Ted Cruz cites 'long historical precedent' of SCOTUS vacancies - CNNPolitics.com - 2 views

"Sen. Ted Cruz signaled Wednesday his interest in slow-walking any new Supreme Court appointments to fill the seat vacated by Antonin Scalia's death, arguing that there is precedent for leaving the ninth seat vacant."
  •
I think they're really having trouble with the vacant seat, leaving it open or filling it, at least at some point. I think they should fill it, if not now then maybe soon, and let's hope that it will be a good person at a good time.

6 outrageous things Philippines president has said - 32 views

"Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is known for his outspoken comments and controversial governing style."
  • ...12 more comments...
  •
This is not a very professional thing to say especially about the president
  •
This "leader" is insane, he's making threats to our people and taking simple manners of politics to a new level of crazy. For example on the controversy about illegal logging he said "cut the trees and I cut your heads." Like who says this publicly about another country. This was just one of many things this man has proclaimed about Obama.
  •
I think that the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is sort of exaggerating his points to look tougher than he is, especially when he backs away from his statement about the president.
  •
What was said by President Rodrigo Duterte was very unprofessional. It calls his ability to maintain the Philippines into question. He says very inappropriate things, and does things that shouldn't and/or aren't legal.
  •
Honestly he shouldn't even be president if this is the crap he's going to pull! Rape and drug cartels are illegal and it won't get stopped cause when you are involved in that you make bank. A lot of his comments remind me of Trump all the sexual remarks especially.. Makes me sick.
  •
He shouldn't have talked about the president like that especially in an interview. It looked very unprofessional for someone big like him to say that.
  •
This guy should not be president. He is immature and childish. All his comments on important topics are crazy and not professional.
  •
I think that the comments of the President Rodrigo Duterte are very inappropriate, because he's a leader and he should be an example for the other people, but he is acting like a baby, insulting people without any sense.
  •
Obviously this guy is a crazy cannibal and should not be in a leader position if he can't be an adult and level headed about things. He seems to get angry very quickly and that's not a good characteristic of a good leader.
  •
The comments by the President are outrageous. A government official should not be saying that to news media knowing that this will get out. He acts like a little baby. He is asking to get shwacked.
  •
Just like Trump he uses his words to try and gain power but instead Duterte used choice words that insulted the president and because the cancellation of their meeting the president of the Philippines had somethings to say that he would have done and he put his words into scenarios that made him disrespectful and should not be a president if he acts like that.
  •
this dude is a savage. He is a crazy little guy and i would be scared to visit or live in the philippines
  •
It was a very unprofessional thing to say, especially about a fellow leader. Even if you disagree with someone that was taken out of hand.
  •
That Philippines President Duterte needs to loosen up, he has bad thoughts about everyone, and says them out loud, whether they're a common citizen or a leader, and he's proving himself to be dangerous to others. He said, "You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out. Because I'd kill you." He also raped a woman of her dignity after she was dead saying, "What a pity...they raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped, but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first." He called both President Obama and the Pope something inappropriate.

Clinton: Trump shamed into making donations to veterans groups - 4 views

  •
"Look, I'm glad he finally did it, but I don't know that he should get much credit," she told CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead.""I think the problem here is the difference between what Donald Trump says and what Donald Trump does."
  •
It's good that Trump raised all that money for the veterans, but he let people think that he donated it. But then he donated some because he got caught. Clinton is trying to shame Trump even more, but isn't having much luck with it. She and Sanders may have been competing, but they're working together to make sure Trump doesn't become president.

Unprecedented and Unlawful: The NSA's "Upstream" Surveillance | Just Security - 4 views

The government is looking into all of our emails, letters and phone calls, the Constitution doesn't think that's very fair or right, that seem to not do that without good reason. The government explains how they do it, but not why they do it, well, only a little; to look for terrorists. Maybe the government does look too much into our mails and phone calls, what if there's something private, or not private but more people know about it than nessesary
  •
Supposedly the government is looking into private emails, and listening to phone calls to increase the security of the nation by monitoring things for terrorism. However this is the only insight given by the NSA. If it was just about terrorism that could be justifiable, but if the government is just looking through things to look for anything illegal, then the government is breaking the 4th amendment in which they do not have warrant, consent, or probable cause to look through your emails,
  •
I don't think the government should look into our private communications unless they have a lead on someone as a terrorist because there is a lot of innocent people who the government are looking at their private communications.

Senate to vote Wednesday to override 9/11 lawsuit bill veto - CNNPolitics.com - 7 views

  •
"The Senate will vote Wednesday to override President Barack Obama's veto of a bill to give victims and families of the 9/11 terrorist attacks the legal right to sue Saudi Arabia for any purported role in the plot, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday."
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I like what he is trying to do by helping those people, but I also think that it isn't worth it. It happened so long ago that they should bring up all of the pain again. Everyone might not sue them but if so many people do then that sounds to me like an unfair trial kind of thing. A lot of money against them I don't think they should get this law passed. Also that may hurt the whole city and the whole city didn't want those attacks to happen, only the extremist. Taking away that money from the city can make it fail.
  •
In my opinion people need to get over the whole 9/11 attack. Sure it was a big deal, but the culprits have been found and executed. This whole thing with Saudi Arabia being involved is absolutely ludicrous.
  •
I agree with Obama that those people should not have the right to sue Saudi Arabis because its not all those peoples fault.

President Obama Claims He Cannot Pardon Snowden; He's Wrong | Techdirt - 17 views

"President Obama Claims He Cannot Pardon Snowden; He's Wrong"
  • ...9 more comments...
  •
Obama is claiming he can't and wont pardon Edward Snowden, also known as the most famous whistleblower in our governments history, solely because he hasn't stood before a court. The president CAN pardon him, but decides not to. Snowden would appear before a court if he knew it'd be a fair trial, but he knows that wont happen. He knows how tyrannous the government is and wont even attempt to have a fair trial.
  •
I agree with Deven because as soon as Snowden steps foot on United States soil he's getting thrown into federal prison and then going to go on trial and not win because it wouldn't be a fair trial
  •
Deven is correct on this one. The thing I find interesting is that Obama said that if Trump pardons Snowden then he will pardon Clinton, the problem with that is Clinton wasn't convicted of anything.
  •
Zayne brought up the Clinton situation, I agree with that because you can't pardon somebody who wasn't convicted of anything, so how would he pardon him?
  •
Snowden shouldn't be pardoned because what he did was against the government policy, even though he was trying to tell america what our government was doing he still violated the law.
  •
In this article, one paragraph says that Obama pardoned three Iranian Americans before they stood trial. So in a way I think Obama is just using his opinion and not giving Snowden a chance. It's truly unfair that if he steps on US soil he will be thrown in jail, when really he just wants a chance to explain himself
  •
I agree with the president on forgiving him because we deserve to know this information.
  •
I think Obama could have pardoned him but is choosing not to. The fact that he's saying that he's not able to is ridiculous. Though what he did was considered against the law, sometimes we need people to go against in order to uncover hidden truths.
  •
I agree with Lauren because Obama had Pardoned people in the past even though they to hadn't been on trial, so his motives don't make since, I believe that his judgement is what is causing this. I don't believe he wants to pardon him, if he did, than this wouldn't be an issue, it already would be done.
  •
On the idea of pardoning Snowden, I agree with Nate because although the information he had should have been told to the public, just in a different way, he broke major laws, so there must be consequences. And going off of Devin's idea of no fair trial is inevitable.
  •
I agree with Lauren because the president has enough authority to make those decisions.

House GOP Conference chair backs Trump, isolating Paul Ryan - 2 views

  •
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, announced her support for Donald Trump's presidential campaign late Wednesday, leaving House Speaker Paul D. Ryan as the last major GOP leader on Capitol Hill not to back Trump. I think she is right. Trump has one people over for speaking his mind, but now he has to show that he has the "temperament for the job."
  •
One of the most important jobs of the president is to form diplomatic relationships with other countries. Given Trump's plans for solving the debt crisis and building his infamous wall, it seems unlikely that he would be able to work well with other countries. I believe that it is foolish to back Trump for president because he is all over the board and has yet to prove he is capable of such a position.
  •
I think she refused to debate because she knew she would lose

Here comes the opposition book: Clinton and her allies prepare for Trump - 5 views

  •
Hillary Clinton and her allies have begun preparing a playbook to defeat Donald Trump that will attempt to do what his Republican opponents couldn't: show that he's unfit to be commander in chief.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Clinton and her supporters are already finding a way to beat trump and attempt to do what most can't do
  •
However I find it interesting that Hillary, along with the mass multi media outlets, are already dismissing Bernie and pretending that his campaign is lifeless, when it's arguable that he's getting more people to attend his rallies, his poll scores are higher, and Hillary is also facing many accusations (coming from multiple different voices) that she's committed voter fraud, or that members of campaign are. Regardless, Sanders is just as relevant and still is capable of becoming the Democratic Nominee, and I think its fair to say that a debate between Sanders and Trump would be less of a circus than Trump next to almost any candidate.
  •
I find it interesting they are essentially coming up with a play by play book on how to defeat Donald Trump, this makes me wonder what Donald Trump is going to attempt to do to beat Hillary/counter her play book.
  •
I find it comical that Hillary and her campaign refuse to debate Sanders due to him being 'too harsh' or whatever they said, yet still think they could handle Trump's no-limit attacks. In comparison, Bernie has kept it completely PG and Trump will pull every card he knows possible to tear her down.

This was quite shocking to me since it happened so close to my home! The suspect was caught in front of AL which was the reason for the lockdown yesterday. I will be following this story closely as we learn more details about this sad case.
  •
The craziest thing in this whole situation is that this man killed his mother and grandmother! I want to know his motives for doing such a thing. Is there something that they did to him that triggered these actions? I hope to hear more about this case in the coming days.
  •
I think that this was a pretty scary situation, I had a friend say that she saw him walking around on the track alone. It was kind of cool to be able to see him get arrested in front of the school. They said that the shooter had an mental illness which makes people think about what could happen with anyone that has a mental illness.
  •
someone interviewed the mom 10 years ago and she said that she feels like her son was going to hurt her

I passed looked out the window and saw the cops cars arresting him and it was pretty scary and the whole situiation is scary some people are just so messed up these days.

1 million dollars is a lot
  •
what I don't understand is that his mother and grandmother were trying to help him get help cause he had a mental disorder and he turned around one night and killed his mother and grandmother. He should have got the help he needed instead of doing what he did.

Atheists' road signs attack faiths of Romney, Obama ahead of Democratic convention - 3 views

Just as the city of Charlotte, N.C., gears up to host the Democratic National Convention, an atheist group is mounting a billboard campaign attacking the religious faiths of President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I think that they made a good point to keep religion out of their decisions they make for the US because there are so many people of different religions in our country. But they came across really offense and offended people of those religions. They had a good idea just not a good way of going about it.
  •
I find it rather hypocritical of the Christian Pastor to say it's never appropriate to insult another person when Christian ad campaigns quite frequently do just that. Objectively, this ad campaign is no more offensive than many campaigns launched by fundamentalist Christians. I fully agree with Silverman's quote, "We are not a Christian nation; we have never been a Christian nation and we never will be," although I would change it to say that we are not a religious nation. Religion needs to be taken out of political discussions, and people who try to bring it into politics need to wake up and realize that Church and State are separated and they can't force their beliefs onto other people.
  •
Had I been in Cullinan's position, I would have handled the request the same way he did because, morally, I believe it is wrong to advertise something that is expected to, and probably intended to, offend a group of people based on their religious beliefs. However, freedom is speech IS a huge component in our society. Whether we like to think it is or not, our government can't be, and isn't, based purely on morals.

I think that with the way that some judges are, that the drug use is going to be to blame for the incident. I don't think it is because even if he din't he still could have just done something crazy. When people who have mental health issues do something bad, their mental state is usually blamed, which should be wrong because whether they're crazy or not, they know what's right and wrong.
  •
Just a counterpoint, PCP often results in extreme anger and violence that would not have occured otherwise. Also, some 'crazy' people do not have the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. This kind of generalization and categorization is what leads to the problems you bring up.

Virginia deputy fights his firing over a Facebook 'like' - 3 views

A Virginia sheriff's deputy has been fired for liking his boss's political opponent -- on Facebook.
  • ...3 more comments...

I think that facebook is becoming a problem. Its beginning to take over peoples lives and now its affecting peoples jobs just because of liking something your boss doesn't approve of. Something needs to change about that.
  •
That judge is wrong. Freedom of expression is allowed to be shown through a political campaign, and in no way should he be fired because he is stating an opinion on facebook, something that is protected in our first amendment.
  •
This case is complicated because working as a deputy is a government job, but to me this case is more about work law than freedom of speech. Here an excerpt of an article on the Iowa Dept of Labor Q/A page: Q. Can my employer fire me without a reason? A. Yes. Iowa is an "employment-at-will" state, meaning that an employer or employee may terminate the relationship at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all. You may have grounds for legal action if the employer fires you: 1. based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, pregnancy or physical or mental disability; 2. for certain "whistle blower" actions such as filing OSHA complaints. 3. contrary to an applicable employment contract; 4. for attempting to comply with applicable government regulations, such as health codes in restaurants This case is in Virginia (not sure about their laws) but in Iowa I feel like the deputy would be out of a job.
  •
A person has the right to like whoever they want on Facebook.
  •
I feel like the deputy should be able to "like" whatever he wants, on facebook or not. I don't think it is right for him to be fired just for liking it.

That is crazy. I get that peeing on a street, is nasty... But it was a little kid, they can't hold it forever....

I mean I would understand that if it was an older child to ticket her but it was a little boy and yeah it is gross but he's still little he didn't know better.
  •
I agree with Eric, except for the fact that she could have found a place to go in for her son to go to the bathroom. The police should have been a little bit more understanding with the age of the child.
  •
    wow..... i agree with eric
  •
It doesn't matter if you're 2 or 20 it violates the law. Its called indecent exposure and it violates the law.
  •
I agree with Cameron. If I was walking on the street I definitely wouldn't want to see that no matter who it was. She could have taken her son into a near by business and asked to use their restroom.
  •
I agree with Charlie I think the police overreacted
  •
I agree with charlie also. I think that the mom should have been warned instead of given a ticket.
  •
I agree with Alex a parent is suppose to teach their child healthy things to do and to pee in places where you shouldn't isn't a healthy thing to do.
  •
Wow, just wow. I bluntly support the mother in this situation. First, it may be against the law, but can you hold a 2 year old accountable for understanding every law? Those that will say, the mother should have stopped him, it's either, in the grass in his pants, and they were out, so should that kid have to walk around smelling like Urine all day, and probably contract some sort of rash from it? Second, the officer lectured the mother. Since when does anyone have any say as to how a parent raises her child? Every person they news crew interviewed agreed with her. So, obviously, the mother has quiet a bit of support. Third, a sanitation issue? Let's take a look at the average dog. The kid does this once, 50 dollar fine. I bet you can have any dog walker have there dog go, and they won't receive a 50 dollar fine. I know I am comparing a human child to a dog, but still, the kid is 2. Just like a dog going in public, he does not know any better. For everyone that calls that a sanitation issue, there is likely to have been at least 1 dog to have pee'd there as well, probably more. Lastly, indecent exposure. By definition, indecent exposure is the deliberate exposure in public or in view of the general public by a person of a portion or portions of his or her body, in circumstances where the exposure is contrary to local moral or other standards of appropriate behavior. Let's go back to the dog reference. Since, by definition, this is not just applicable to humans, should every dog walker receive a 50 dollar fine every time they let there dog outside? Having 4 dogs, I would receive a 200 dollar ticket every 1-2 hours a day anyone in my house is home. Over a 24 hour period, I would probably receive about $3200 in fines. To add on, the term deliberate, as used in this form, would require the careful consideration of actions. This 2 year old did not consider anything other then probably, "I gotta go!!!" The definition of indecent exposure itself should override the tic
  •
For me personally, if I were a parent, I'd try to get my child to a bathroom, but that woman didn't deserve to be ticketed for that. If she were the one doing the peeing, I'd understand the ticket because she's an adult. But the little kid is only two, and knows nothing about indecency or sexuality or all that. (Or, at least, I hope he doesn't . . .) But it's also like Payton said about the whole dog deal. Dogs also know nothing about indecency. They obviously know about mating as they get older, but dogs aren't humans, so they don't know how to or not to be decent. And while the little kid is human, he obviously still knows nothing about either subject at that age; he hasn't lived long enough.

I think we are better of some ways then our parents were. However, things nowadays are far more complicated then they were back then. I know that now men are earning less then women are compared to what their parents were..but I think this is simply because men had started out with higher wages, I mean women weren't allowed to work for quite some time, and then when we were finally given a chance to work, our wages were pitiful...we've come a long way.
