Why Wal-Mart workers are striking on Black Friday - 0 views

  •
"Jeff Landry, an employee in Sapulpa, Okla., plans to join the protest. He works from 4 to 9 p.m. after attending school all day. When he was scheduled for a shift during class, Landry complained. He says his managers responded by cutting his hours from 40 to below 30 a week. This meant that Landry was no longer eligible for health care, since Wal-Mart requires workers to work an average of 30 hours per week to get benefits. "They tried all these tactics to get rid of me," he said."

Wow this is crazy! I would quit!
  •
    Yeah it sounds crazy!
  •
protesting is a legal rght given to any united states citizen as long as they do it legally
  •
I agree partially with what the workers are striking for because Walmart is a crazy place every single day, especially around the holiday season. However, I do not think they need to demand better pay or more stable hours. Their average pay is 5 whole dollars above federal minimum wage, and there are plenty of people out there who work a different job with a lot more hours at irregular times for minimum wage and no benefits. Why should Walmart be any different? I feel as if they are striking for something they will not get.
  •
protesting is legal only if its non-violent so I think the had a right to go on strike.

What will happen if the US goes over the fiscal cliff? - 0 views

    scary stuff

  •
Really is a scary thought, and it's sad that no steps have been taken to prevent it. We've had years, but this administration has been pretty focused on its own agenda...
  •
This is really going to effect our generation!
  •
This is a very serious matter and it will affect every american in the United States. If there is going to be tax cuts on all departments will jobs be lost. If our economy goes into a recession how will our economy come back from that? No one knows if this will benefit or hurt. This is why this is so difficult too think about.
  •
Well its a sad that the government just blows this problem over there shoulders with no care in the world, and we the people take the bullet for it.
  •
It's also sad that during this current Congress they voted to repeal the ACA thirty sometimes other then work on this issue. I think that many people forget that the Obama Administration has presented a jobs plan and the House rejected it just as the Senate/President have rejected job plans brought up by the House. This is the exact reason that we're even in this mess. A lack of compromise on all sides.

Children Exposed to Nicotine in Utero Have Lower Reading Scores | SciTech Daily - 1 views

  •
Interesting that they assume nicotene does this. 20% lower scores is pretty concrete results though.

  •
I would like to see this put to test in AL or Council Bluffs and see if it is still accurate.
  •
    Interesting
  •
It was not as surprising to me that these tests have happened. To me being exposed to nicotine while they are still in the developing process is very harmful. I don't think mothers should ever expose babies to that, if they want them to have a brighter future.
  •
if they were exposed to marijuana the would have had better reading scores
  •
I don't find this surprising. Nicotine is a known mutagen, so I think it's actually foolish to assume that it won't affect fetuses which are exposed to it. It will be interesting to see if this study actually gets any media attention, though. Unfortunately, I doubt it will. People, especially Americans, are usually content to overlook any negative consequences to their actions.
  •
A quick google search for the effects of nicotine on fetuses came up with a number of medical journals on the subject. Research into this subject has been done at last as far back as 1996, and smoking cigarettes during pregnancy is documented to have a large number of possible adverse outcomes even worse than poor reading skills, including spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and sudden infant death syndrome. Here's a link to an article from the Oxford Journal on the subject. http://toxsci.oxfordjournals.org/content/116/2/364.full

Teen Pregnancy Rates in Rural Areas - Educational Problem? - 0 views

  •
Education does get taken away, once you ave a baby.
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
I like this post Cause it makes you think about the causes of becoming pregnant When your still in school. Like the girl in the reading that had plans to go to school for 4 years and didn't because she had a child.
  •
Teen pregnancy is a great deal and seemingly popular. For instance the teen mom show which doesn't show consequences of pregnancy it almost glorifies the fact those girls are pregnant. Im not saying its totally wrong to get pregnant but its not the smartest choice a teen girl could make.
  •
Well some teen mom's do go back school after having their baby because their education is still important to them so they try to make an effort on finishing school whatever way they can.
  •
Just because you get pregnant doesn't mean your life is going to go downhill, many girls get pregnant, become single mothers, and still graduate high school, sometimes a year early and get a full time job and raise their child.
  •
Yeah true Jamie, But I disagree that its okay because most of the population of teen girls having babies think its a new accessory and are unfit to support it. A part time job at taco bell is not enough to support a family.

Iowa House GOP Seeks Gay Marriage Ban - 0 views

An interesting look at how gay marriage is still a battle in Iowa.
  • ...7 more comments...
  •
See, how does gay marriage affect straight marriage? It has obviously been like this for quite a while.. Iowa has not Blown up or anything because of it. It is obviously a control issue. I still don't understand why it is SO important to get rid of gay marriage.
  •
re: Alex B - I think eating broccoli is 'disgusting' but I don't know that the government has any right to ban it. America is split 50/50 on this issue. I would welcome more people to give some opinions on this thread. I am interested to hear what are some of the reasons for differences in beliefs (rather than just personal preference) (maybe discussing rights and obligations of citizens/government)
  •
The battle on Gay Marriage isn't one of "morals" or "protecting the foundation of marriage". This is an argument about religious ideals (Which shouldn't be expressed in our country that prides itself on having a separation of church and state) and Insurance rates. I honestly believe that keeping away rights like this is is prejudice and is in the same ball park as racial segregation. Alex: Then don't look.
  •
i believe that it should be only men and women that can get married. thats how it was when my grandparents grew up and event my parents and thats the way i think it should stay. im not trying to be rude to any gay man or women its just my thoughts that men should marry women and women should marry men not marrying the same sex.
  •
It's legal to marry your cousin in 16 states but you can't marry somebody the same gender as you? Gay marriage has been going on for such a long time now, what issues has it caused? Did wanting to marry another man/woman cause World War 1? There are incestual relations in religious writing, but wanting to marry someone the same gender as you is a sin? I find that disgusting, they have no right to ban love. Peace.
  •
I could careless if you married the same gender as long as that person makes you happy then why does it even matter.
  •
im sorry, somebody got on my thing and put that. i didnt
  •
If you love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with them you should be able to. It shouldn't matter whether you're two males, two females, or even two potatoes, as long as you're happy.
  •
We should leave it alone. I dont know why its such a big concern when it has little affect on our lives. To each their own i believe..

Krokodil: The Drug That Eats Junkies From the Inside Out - 2 views

Ew! Crazy drug that is being used hardcore in Russia that basically rots your body inside out. They use it because it is cheaper than heroin but has a similar high.
  • ...8 more comments...
  •
That's crazy! How do people even come up what to put in drugs like this?
  •
They know that the drug itself is literally eating away their body from the inside. Yet the addiction is so powerful that they'd rather keep injecting them self with it. It's much more addicting and powerful than heroine. Even though it's cheaper to make the affects are much worse.
  •
I feel like this was like a mistake drug. They just threw bunch of bad stuff together and called it a drug because they got high.....It's crazy what people will do to feel that way!
  •
Craziest drug I've heard of. Count me out on getting that "high." People are nuts!!!
  •
That is disgusting thinking about what it does to the body. It literally makes the skin peel away from the bones.
  •
It is crazy what people will do to satisfy themselves.. Unbelievable
  •
if a drug there is a drug that can eat you inside out they should make it to where you cant get it because a lot of bad things can happen
  •
Maybe if all the people who do drugs take this drug, it will get rid of druggies altogether. Maybe it's not such a bad thing. Joking. But seriously, why do people do these things if they know it's bad for them?
  •
Honestly, how do people come up with such drugs? Are they that desperate!?
  •
This drug is disgusting. Why would people do this if they know what it is going to do to them? They are pretty much choosing to slowly kill themselves. They know people that have been on it longer and have seen the effects of it, but still choose to use the drug. I understand it is cheaper than heroin, which most of them were addicted to before this drug, but it is so much worse than heroin. Once they start the drug it takes over there lives, between cooking it and putting it in them. They don't get much sleep, if any at all because of it. I think of it as a form of suicide, pretty much.

The thought someone being able to get guns sent to a college and not get into trouble. Then he almost shot up a college with thousands of rounds of ammunition but ended up killing himself before hand. I think this should have been handled when the college had guns that were sent to him from an online store.

I think it's crazy that he could have this all sent to the college ready to use.

  •
I'm glad that she won this case, because the law states that if your husband or wife were to die, you get the things they leave behind. I don't see why it would be different if you are gay. It just makes no sense. I don't understand why this law was passed in the first place.

I think it's okay to cheer for your country when you're trying to support them, but if you're doing it to offend other races, then that's different.
  •
Some people take their patriotism too far. But then again, other races look for reasons to call Americans racist.
  •
Patriotism is huge to Americans. Chanting USA at USA games shows that they are patriotic but when you chant it towards other races because you believe they are not true Americans is a different story. Those people who offended others by chanting that should be punished.
  •
I think representing your country is not offensive. Other people have the option to do the same things in representing what they stand for.
  •
This happened at one of the basketball games I was at this year and I thought it was very disrespectful but nothing was said or done to the student section that said it.
  •
Those people were just stupid, they took the chant to a whole different level how it wasn't meant to be.

I think it's fair to say that the criticisms made against Hagel are in the past now. He should be fit for the job. From a defense standpoint there will be a lot of issues at hand in this administration.

I hope she's in jail. What she did was completely wrong. What kind of parent stands on the sidelines and tells their son to beat the other kid? And she doesn't let him stop even when his nose was bleeding. It's just horrible to see what people are really capable of.
  •
I would like to know what the cause of the fight is. But no matter what the cause was, that doesn't justify a fight, and it's inexcusable that a parent would encourage their child to use violence as a solution.

Hobby Lobby: The First Martyr Under Obamacare? - 0 views

  •
Someone posted this, but it wasn't possible to comment
  •
First point: I fail to see how denying a single cell the chance to go through mitosis is abortion. It's no more aware than bacteria. Also, the author is referencing the morning-after pill. For some reason there's a lot of confusion about how the morning after pill actually works. It prevents the egg from joining the sperm, or depending on where the woman is in her cycle, prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. Contrary to what pro-life proponents apparently believe, conception does not happen immediately after having sex. If using the morning-after pill is abortion, we may as well call abstinence abortion. Secondly, "the mandate requires private citizens who are also employers to purchase private goods (health insurance services) with private money from non-government companies." This is clearly written by a sensationalist. What it really means is that a company has to use its own money to provide healthcare. (And everyone seems to be forgetting that employees don't just receive healthcare plans for free). There is a difference between being a private citizen and being an employer. Owning a public company and employing people is about as far from private as you can get. "Requiring private citizens to pay for abortifacients is more akin to requiring the Amish to use their own money to purchase weapons from a private gun dealer or be forced into bankruptcy. Or kind of like forcing anti-pornography legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon to buy pornography for her law students." This is simply ludicrous and shows that the author clearly doesn't understand what a business is. It's a corporation, it employees people, it isn't a private citizen. I will admit that if Hobby Lobby employed only people who were in complete agreement with the beliefs of the owners I would support them in their case. However, the reality is that many of Hobby Lobby's employees don't share the exact same beliefs as the owner. And it would in fact be illegal for Hobby Lobby to choose their employ
  •
ees because of their beliefs. And the last time I checked, in America we don't make people follow certain religions or beliefs. In fact, the law isn't supposed to be based in religion. I know it sounds shocking, but it actually isn't okay to force a religion on people, or to make everyone live in accordance with one belief system, which is exactly what Hobby Lobby, and everyone who argues against this provision in the new health care law, is trying to do. Lastly, the author says repeatedly that this law essentially discriminates against Christians, which is a complete lie. Christians is a broad term. There are Christians who believe in all kinds of birth control and then there are those who think all birth control should be outlawed. There are even Christians who get abortions. So, and this is a message to anyone who writes articles of this kind, stop saying just saying Christians. Tell the truth and call yourself a Fundamentalist. Saying Christians make it seem like the majority of people who believe in Jesus Christ agree with you, and they don't. You're a minority, and you need to accept that. And maybe read a little about how our government works. It's a majority rules system.

Nazi essay assignment teacher placed on leave by New York school district - 1 views

  •
    Wrong.
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
If my teacher asked me to write that essay I would refuse too. That is not something they should have to be writing about. She could have at least given them the option to choose either that Jews are bad or Nazis are bad so it didn't look as bad for her.
  •
This is wrong for the teacher to assign something that may offend someones religion.
  •
Couldn't she just be trying to open the children's mind to a different point of view? Giving them a life lesson, that there's always two sides to every story. Not necessarily trying to offend anyone.
  •
Teachers have kids write essays from different aspects and point of views all the time to try to get them to open their mind about new things. The teacher just should have anticipated that people may get offended with a topic like that.
  •
Maybe she shouldn't have picked a topic that pushes the envelope so much. I don't know, it just seems like it could be really touchy, like it kind of crosses the line.
  •
She should have been aware that some people may reject the assignment when she asked them to write about it! For some people it's a sore subject so I don't think they should necessarily have to write about it if they don't want too.
  •
That is a serious topic for students.. It would personally be uncomfortable for me to write an essay for that.
  •
I feel that the idea behind the assignment wasn't to necessarily portray that the teacher thought, and wanted the class to think, Jewish people as being evil but I feel that it is what ended up happening. The teacher could have picked hundreds of different essay topics ranging from abortion to zero tolerance polices that would have allowed students to write persuasively and not specify any one group in particular.

Guantanamo camp burns through $900,000 a year per inmate: Thomson Reuters Business News... - 0 views

  •
i think spending $900,000 per inmate is way to much to be spending on every single inmate that is in the prison
  •
Since our national dept is beyond high, it would be a good idea to shut this down, and find other ways to deal with these insane people. Obama may actually be doing something right this time.
  •
I think Obama is doing the right thing. We are paying over $900,000 a year to keep one inmate in this prison which is way to much. Other prisons cost anywhere from $30,000-$70,000. I don't get why it costs so much to keep inmates there.

white house proposes contraceptives compromise - 2 views

the government shuld not have to provide free birth control for women if their not going to use methods of not getting pregnant
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
re:patrick -- perhaps I misunderstood your comment, but outside of abstinence what "other methods of not getting pregnant" are there besides medical birth control options? Like other articles posted here, I was as interested in reading many of the comments on the NYTimes site after the article, there were very compelling arguments on each side. I found myself siding with many who said that employers should not get the choice to opt out of providing this coverage. This was one such post: "Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in blood transfusions. Does anyone believe for one second that we would be debating whether a Jehovah's Witness-owned company should cover blood transfusions for its employees? I seriously doubt it--which means that the debate we are having is not actually about religious freedom at all. It's about whether contraception is an essential part of women's health care, just like blood transfusions."
  •
i agree with Patrick if women don't wont to get pregnant they should stay to the precautionary treatments to not become pregnant
  •
I think this page will help you boys understand a little more about what birth control actually is: http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/features/other-reasons-to-take-the-pill Personally, I think that it should be covered by insurance. Besides being a popular contraceptive, it control many different hormones in a woman's body. It's used to cure things like ovarian cysts, and irregular periods. It can relieve those pesky cramps that you get on your period, or just at random points of the month. It will clear your acne, and even help prevent cancers. And, the hormones being consumed by taking the pill, can balance our emotions, possibly making us more tolerance of ignorance towards women's health. The church aspect of this story is, in my opinion, ridiculous. Them refusing to cover a product that would help their employees be healthier, prettier, nicer, and more likely to remain cancer free, is unreasonable. Just because the typical use is frowned upon by their religions, doesn't mean it's right to make their employees spend their hard earned money on measures to maintain a healthy body, that could be covered by their companies insurance.
  •
I don't see why taking measures to prevent a pregnancy is so bad. People are always saying that teenagers are getting pregnant at a young age when the truth is, maybe these girls can't afford it. No, they should not be having sex so young but sometimes you have to face the fact that girls are having sex at a young age and instead of turning a blind eye, they should take measures to prevent the pregnancy from happening. Just like Kirsten said, it does more than just preventing pregnancies. Some girls need it and can't afford it.

  •
This is a really interesting movement. While I think most people (people being the keyword there) would be more than happy to see this passed. Unfortunately I feel the corporations that hold a lot of influence in our government won't allow this to get the proper attention where it counts.
  •
Although if it were to be passed then it would show that the people can still indeed overpower the large corporations and their political pull.
