    Actually Sante and me just reviewed their paper. Although (some of) the scientists in the paper seem to have good track records their experimental techniques are by far not the best to determine the excess amount of energy produced. Even though their methods may introduce fairly large errors they would not be able to negate the cited power output - so they either are super-sloppy (i.e. they lie) or there is TRULY new physics involved... A big problem is that they are basically verifying somebody else's experiment - however because this guy is paranoid he does not tell them exactly what he did. In fact they went to his lab and used a setup that HE put together. All they do is do a measurement on it and it seems like they try to be thorough. There is quite a chance that the guy behind it all (Rossi) is setting them up - personally I would think >95%. However, the implications of this being new physics are so big that I think further research should be conducted.

    I just answered something very similar to Franco, except the conclusions: I don't think that there is a good reason for us or anybody else in ESA to get involved at this stage.

    I agree - if this device would work it there would be other interest groups (like the energy sector) with a much more concrete stake in the technology.

    I knew about the project only, but not about this very interesting missile ... "The launcher has a remarkable track record of several hundred successful launches and only 1 failure. Shtil is marketed by the State Rocket Center Makeyev."

  • In a new study, neuroscientists connected a network of electrodes to the hearing centers of 15 patients' brains (image above) and recorded the brain activity while they listened to words like "jazz" or "Waldo." They saw that each word generated its own unique pattern in the brain. So they developed two different computer programs that could reconstruct the words a patient heard just by analyzing his or her brain activity.

" Triggered by commonly available ambient mechanical energy such as human footfalls, a NG with size smaller than a human palm can generate maximum short-circuit current of 2 mA, delivering instantaneous power output of 1.2 W to external load. The power output corresponds to an area power density of 313 W/m2 and a volume power density of 54 268 W/m3 at an open-circuit voltage of 1200 V. An energy conversion efficiency of 14.9% has been achieved. The power was capable of instantaneously lighting up as many as 600 multicolor commercial LED bulbs. The record high power output for the NG is attributed to optimized structure, proper materials selection and nanoscale surface modification. This work demonstrated the practicability of using NG to harvest large-scale mechanical energy, such as footsteps, rolling wheels, wind power, and ocean waves."

    Few news events can unleash more schadenfreude within the security community than watching a notorious firm of hackers-for-hire become a hack target themselves. In the case of the freshly disemboweled Italian surveillance firm Hacking Team, the company may also serve as a dark example of a global surveillance industry that often sells to any government willing to pay, with little regard for that regime's human rights record.     And the direct link to the whole stash: https://ht.transparencytoolkit.org/ Their admin kept a plain text file with passwords on his desktop. Maybe they should have hired someone to do an audit :) More importantly, from the files it follows that this company found and exploited yet another vulnerability in Flash. So the current round of plugin/browser updates is thanks to this hack :)

    The vulnerability only seemed to affect some of the more recent versions. Maybe from time to time we should downgrade flash to avoid them :))

I'm not quite sure, but I'd quess microscopic images used in medicine can easily reach terapixels... What a waste of pixels anyway... they weren't able to find a bit more interesing city?

  • Kilometre-long pulses of light have been stored for over one second in a 0.1 mm cloud of ultracold atoms – before being revived and sent on their way. This latest demonstration of light storage using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is the first to break the second barrier – using ultracold atoms and has the added bonus of preserving the quantum state of the incoming pulse. The physicists in the US who carried out the experiment say that the work could play a key role in quantum information technology.
