Bioengineering to generate healthy skin - 1 views

  • That is, using a small biopsy from a specific patient, they can generate almost the entire cutaneous surface of that individual in the lab.
  • that it is possible to isolate epidermic stem cells from patients with different genetic skin diseases, cultivate them and, using molecular engineering as a first step, incorporate the therapeutic genes into each patient's genome to take the place of the one that the patient does not have or that functions abnormally. Afterwards, in the second step, the stem cells would be assembled into patches ready to be transplanted onto the patients.
  • "What we did in this case -- explains Marcela del Río -- was to transfer a normal SPINK-5 gene to a patient's stem cells and later use these cells to generate skin that could be transplanted to experimental models, such as mice."
  •
Nice approach to generate healthy skin and to patch parts or to replace the overall human skin. Next step - clinical studies.

Updated: European neuroscientists revolt against the E.U.'s Human Brain Project | Scien... - 4 views

  •
Summary of the critics: the project cannot but fail, its a waste of money that will dry funds for serious research and will thus create an enormous disappointment in the public opinion that is, ultimately, the real funder of the project

not for space but the air breathing battery still is a nice concept - would make robots more "human" if they have to breath :-)

wow, that looks pretty real to me! I remember a presentation some time ago on difficulties with large scale LED lights for making directed light sources. I guess we can cross that off the list :)

New controversial study seems to indicate that neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons) in human adult brains might be a hoax.

Alibaba's AI Outguns Humans in Reading Test - Bloomberg - 4 views

  •
any papers or insights on methods available?
  •
Couldn't find a paper for Alibaba's results but Microsoft Research's performance on this dataset was very close. The paper is here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/r-net.pdf Btw the 'reading test' is a publicly available dataset called 'Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD)'. Their website shows a leaderboard: https://rajpurkar.github.io/SQuAD-explorer/

Correct me, if I am wrong, but AFAIK this is the first time an AI enters a ladder, i.e. playing against humans on their own terms in the wild and not as part of some pre-arranged experiment.

Fully automated satellite-assembly lines? Not quite yet - SpaceNews.com - 0 views

While robots began assisting and replacing assembly line workers in automobile and airplane factories years ago, humans still reign supreme in satellite manufacturing. But that's slowly starting to change.

The redbull mission will attempt to transcend human limits. Supported by a team of experts Felix Baumgartner plans to ascend to 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon and make a freefall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting to the ground.

since months austria is not speaking about anything else ... hope it is over soon :-) seriously: they even had last year Armstrong coming over to discuss with this guy on television (have posted it here) and the whole Red Bull advertisement machinery is working full speed on this ... quite impressive for just a jump ...

Convolutional networks start to rule the world! - 2 views

  •
Recently, many competitions in the computer vision domain have been won by huge convolutional networks. In the image net competition, the convolutional network approach halves the error from ~30% to ~15%! Key changes that make this happen: weight-sharing to reduce the search space, and training with a massive GPU approach. (See also the work at IDSIA: http://www.idsia.ch/~juergen/vision.html) This should please Francisco :)

...mmmmm... they use 60 million parameters and 650,000 neurons on a task that one can somehow consider easier than (say) predicting a financial crisis ... still they get 15% of errors .... reminds me of a comic we saw once ... cat http://www.sarjis.info/stripit/abstruse-goose/496/the_singularity_is_way_over_there.png

I think the ultimate solution is still to put a human brain in a jar and use it for pattern recognition. Maybe we should get a stagiaire for this..?

It does not only give you superhuman abilities... it also makes you look hideous beyond human imagination :-P Nonetheless, it seems really interesting to bring all these separately existing technologies together in a single augmented reality device.

AI and The Future Of Civilization - 1 views

  •
What makes us different is the particulars of our history, which gives us our notions of purpose and goals. That's a long way of saying when we have the box on the desk that thinks as well as any brain does, the thing it doesn't have, intrinsically, is the goals and purposes that we have. Those are defined by our particulars-our particular biology, our particular psychology, our particular cultural history. The thing we have to think about as we think about the future of these things is the goals. That's what humans contribute, that's what our civilization contributes-execution of those goals; that's what we can increasingly automate.

Wearable Robot Transforms Musicians into Three-Armed Drummers - 2 views

  •
Now this would be really cool if it had a brain computer interface and could be controlled by a trained drummer's mind! Science and Technology Society and Culture Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have built a wearable robotic limb that allows drummers to play with three arms. The two-foot long "smart arm" can be attached to a musician's shoulder. It responds to human gestures and the music it hears.

Trump Asks NASA to Explore Putting Crew on Rocket's Debut Flight - 0 views

Trying the new rocket with humans right away (and 1.5 years to go). What can possibly go wrong? The Trump administration has directed NASA to study whether it is feasible to fly astronauts on the debut flight of the agency's heavy-lift rocket, a mission currently planned to be unmanned and targeted to launch in late 2018, officials said on Friday.

Learn to dock ATV the astronaut way - 3 views

  •
"Two sets of [ ATV docking training for astronauts ] lessons are now available for the home user to try." And in case you wonder *where* in the earth are they available, the links are on the right-hand column (also known as ESA's scorn on usability). As usual for the material located there, I took me a few minutes to find them...
  •
Well I tried and could not locate the app to download from these links and sent them a feedback on what I thought a wrong error - though the email bounced :-) So, what is the right link to the app then?
  •
Leo, I'm not iEnabled, so I can't help you with the app. Using other links you can try the PC version (so 20th-century-ish, I know), of course assuming you have somewhere one with Internet Explorer :-)
