Fresh Food in Space - 0 views

  •
This December, NASA plans to launch a set of packs, filled with a material akin to kitty litter, functioning as planters for six romaine lettuce plants. The lettuce will be grown under bright-pink LED lights, ready to harvest after just 28 days. Once harvested, it will be frozen and stored away for testing back on Earth. No one is allowed to eat anything before the plants are thoroughly vetted for cosmic microbes.

Science on Mars and Mars on Science - 0 views

Some sort of organic carbon has been detected by the sampling of Curiosity; the contamination source was isolated and the signal persists. The scientists suggest as a source meteorites transporting interstellar matter, or maybe some sort of ancient life whose biomass production only survived cosmic radiation as it was buried underground. a big deal: six relevant articles were published simultaneously online: http://www.sciencemag.org/site/extra/curiosity/index.xhtml?utm_content=&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=Science&utm_source=shortener

What happens to your brain on the way to Mars - 1 views

  •
This study from NASA shows that cosmic rays have a deleterious effect on the brain, more than expected, resulting in in symptoms similar to dementia (memory loss, decline in problem solving skills, general cognitive functions). A reason more to investigate into hibernation?

Laser-Plasma Particle Accelerator - 1 views

  •
    Can we have one?
  •
They say they create 2 GeV electrons in a very small setup. However the laser they use is more than 10 meters in length. Still a really nice result.
  •
Compared to a 27km circumference this is major achievement and it is indeed already foreseen that future colliders will include this technology as beam fillers and pre-accelerators at some point. The technique is quite elegant and a lot more energy efficient. Nevertheless, there are also thoughts that future particle colliders might actually go towards space and study collisions orginating from extremely energetic cosmic particles

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | ESA needs to 'tighten the belt' amid budget crisis - 2 views

  • ESA is freezing spending
  • France is planning to boost its funding by 12 percent
  • ESA selected Thales Alenia Space and OHB Technology to build the satellites, but the production contract is still bogged down by Germany's complaints about the distribution of MTG work between France and Germany
  •
no much news in regard to the january's talk of Dordain althought just a thought : what if ESA tries to make money - as CNES does - rather than just spending it ?
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
to begin with european industry (and probably governments) would complain that ESA was taking business away from industry? or any part that started to make money would be quickly spun-off
  •
really bad interview in my view ... btw: how is CNES making money and how much?
  •
CNES is known to be a semi-autonomous agency in the sense that it can auto-finance parts of its activities. Besides the money coming from the state, money comes from the participation of CNES in private companies (e.g. Arianespace) and its own activities (e.g. SPOT among others...). It is about 400M€ per year (almost a class-M mission in Cosmic Vision). Planck captures the universe coming to life - 1 views

  • ESA's Planck mission has released its first full-sky map. The image shows the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in higher resolution than ever before and it may help cosmologists to develop a much clearer picture of the early universe. "This is the moment that Planck was conceived for," says David Southwood, who is ESA's director of science and robotic exploration. "We are opening the door to an Eldorado where scientists can seek the nuggets that will lead to deeper understanding of how our universe came to be and how it works now."

Timelapse video of asteroid discoveries in our solar system from 1980-2010 (watch in 10... - 5 views

  •
Nice... Now I have a lame question: after you have discovered ~500k asteroids, all moving (I assume more or less) chaotically in that asteroid belt, how do you tell one from another?
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
hmm, not very chaotic indeed - laws of Kepler plus some perturbations.
  •
That's what I thought but when presented as a green "goo" in the video, it appears rather unordered... so I guess this is just an impression evoked by a not-to-scale presentation?
  •
It depends... orbits can be chaotic if the orbital period is in a resonance with Jupiter, although such orbits are not stable. Such configurations tend to get disrupted pretty quickly (in cosmic terms :P) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkwood_gap

impressive! I'm sure it's connected to the black hole, at some point it must have been active. It shows how it's important to put all observations public !

The Pioneer Anomaly, a 30-Year-Old Cosmic Mystery, May Be Resolved At Last | Popular Sc... - 0 views

  •
"After decades spent thinking, arguing, hoping, and in the words of Turyshev, "making a career off of it," these scientists' interest in the Pioneer anomaly has, understandably, accumulated psychological baggage; in the case of many of them, a cloud of emotional investment has formed around the core of objective scientific inquiry. And clouds obscure things."

Mapping Turbulence in the Solar Wind - 0 views

  • a team reports studying the turbulent flow of solar wind particles by monitoring the accompanying waves of magnetic field. The team used a cluster of satellites to measure the field in unprecedented spatial detail. They found that the waves aren't equally strong in all directions but are larger in certain preferred directions, as theorists had predicted. The observation will help astrophysicists better understand the consequences of the solar wind, including its effect on the transmission of cosmic rays, particles that arrive at Earth from elsewhere in our galaxy.
