A group of researchers from Austria have sent twisted beams of light across the rooftops of Vienna. It is the first time that twisted light has been transmitted over a large distance outdoors, and could enable researchers to take advantage of the significant data-carrying capacity of light in both classical and quantum communications. Although the data rate is not very high, it could offer a way to provide unhackable data links via space. Would provide an edge over terrestrial fibre optics?

The EFF communicate is actually quite inaccurate. This is disappointing from the EFF, though for some part, it is due to the communication from the researchers who "discovered" the attack. PGP itself is not broken, but rather some implementations on some email clients (notably Enigmail, though it was patched several months ago). The fact that the graphene can emit laser pulses at different wavelengths might be interesting for spectroscopy and laser communications. The tiny dimensions might also help in miniaturization of devices (although apparently a conventional laser is necessary for pumping...). Maybe it would be possible to make very efficient displays with such a technology..?
