Why Quantum "Clippers" Will Distribute Entanglement Across The Oceans - 0 views

  •
Quantum internet will enable perfectly secure communications, but the technology and means to build the required quantum memories and routers are still many years distant. The proposal here is to store qubits and send them in containers over the oceans. Researchers claim that it is possible to send information at bandwidths measured in teraahertz outperforming the predictions of a quantum router internet. It can be thought in space systems as well. Then the problem is still for how long are we able to store a qubit, without dephasing... PS: As a curiosity, you can find a very interesting book about containers and how in some way they changed our world: Mark Levinson's book 'The Box' http://press.princeton.edu/titles/9383.html Maybe they will do it again

The Port - Hackathon at CERN - apply now - 3 views

  •
Interdisciplinary teams of handpicked individuals chosen for their field-leading expertise and innovative mind combine humanitarian questions with state of the art science, cutting-edge technology and endless fantasy. Organised by THE Port Association, hosted by CERN (IdeaSquare tbc) and with partners from other non-governmental organisations, a three-day problem solving workshop hackathon will be devoted to humanitarian, social and public interest topics. Interdisciplinary teams of selected participants will work together in the fields of: communication - transport - health - science - learning - work - culture - data

Lost Beagle 2 spacecraft found intact on Martian surface - 0 views

  •
The UK-led Beagle 2 Mars lander, thought lost on the red planet since 2003, has been found partially deployed on the Martian surface. New images show that it successfully touched down on the planet's surface in 2003 but failed to deploy all four of its solar panels, thereby allowing no communication with scientists on Earth.

High-gain optical transistors flipped by just one photon - 0 views

  •
Two research teams have designed an optical gate that can 'switch off' a stream of photons as well as store them ... good news for optical communications as well as future photon-based quantum information systems.

First Terahertz Amplifier "Goes to 11" - 2 views

  •
Guinness World Record breaking, "first radio amplifier operating at terahertz frequencies could lead to communications systems with much higher data rates, better radar, high-resolution imaging that could penetrate smoke and fog, and better ways of identifying dangerous substances, say the researchers who built it". Built from HEMTs (High Electron Mobility Transistors) made of InP (Indium Phosphide), this is a new milestone on the road to the THz applications.

Brain decoder can eavesdrop on your inner voice - 4 views

  •
"As you read this, your neurons are firing - that brain activity can now be decoded to reveal the silent words in your head TALKING to yourself used to be a strictly private pastime. That's no longer the case - researchers have eavesdropped on our internal monologue for the first time. The achievement is a step towards helping people who cannot physically speak communicate with the outside world." Or alternatively, a step towards snooping into individuals' privacy.

Soon we'll be able to see movies about our dreams!

Only if you are willing to have a chip implanted into/onto your brain though ^^

Astronomers resort to crowdfunding to save key telescope - 1 views

  •
Related to our discussion on crowdfunding from Friday's science coffee. (Another sad example of how Tony Abbott's policy negatively affects the Australian science community... ) A team of astronomers have resorted to raising funds through crowdsourcing to try and save an Australian telescope involved in mapping the Milky Way. The 22-metre diameter Mopra Radio Telescope, based near Coonabarabran in western New South Wales, is slated to be shut down by the end of the year after $110-million was slashed from CSIRO in last year's federal budget.

Google Just Open Sourced the Artificial Intelligence Engine at the Heart of Its Online ... - 2 views

  •
TensorFlow is an open source software library for numerical computation using data flow graphs. Nodes in the graph represent mathematical operations, while the graph edges represent the multidimensional data arrays (tensors) communicated between them. The flexible architecture allows you to deploy computation to one or more CPUs or GPUs in a desktop, server, or mobile device with a single API. TensorFlow was originally developed by researchers and engineers working on the Google Brain Team within Google's Machine Intelligence research organization for the purposes of conducting machine learning and deep neural networks research, but the system is general enough to be applicable in a wide variety of other domains as well.

An AI physicist can derive the natural laws of imagined universes - 1 views

  •
I'm afraid I take some issue with this rather glorious title. I've only skimmed this paper but looking at the experimental details, their 'imagined universes' comprise of a ball confined in a 2D space as well as a double pendulum. Work along this area is nothing new - it's known in the control community as Inverse Reinforcement Learning - learning dynamics of some system from demonstration trajectories. The paper title ('Toward an AI Physicist for Unsupervised Learning') is more moderate so yet again the issue is how AI is reported in the media...

Europe Unveils Its Vision for a Quantum Future - 0 views

  •
"...the European Commission announced in 2016 that it was investing one billion euros in a research effort known as the Quantum Technology Flagship. The goal for this project is to develop four technologies: quantum communication, quantum simulation, quantum computing, and quantum sensing. After almost two years, how is it going?" arxiv link to the actual report: http://arxiv.org/abs/1712.03773
