Earth's extremes point the way to extraterrestrial life - 1 views

  •
Seems a little speculative but pretty interesting thoughts. In regards to terraforming Mars this might be of interest: "During the daytime, plant-like microorganisms on a Martian-like surface could photosynthesize hydrogen peroxide. At night, when the atmosphere is relatively humid, they could use their stored hydrogen peroxide to scavenge water from the atmosphere, similar to how microbial communities in the Atacama use the moisture that salt brine extracts from the air to stay alive."

'Doomsday Ark' to be Housed on the Moon -A Remote Access Toolkit to Rebuild the Human Race - 5 views

  • our future may reside on the Moon if plans.being drawn up for a “Doomsday ark” on the moon by the European Space Agency are carried through.
  • whether living organisms could survive, European Space Agency scientists are hoping to experiment with growing tulips on the moon within the next decade.
  • would initially be run by robots
  •
did not know ESA was doing that!
  •
too late, the world will in end in 2012 ......... I fail to see in which scenario this would be better than a couple of vaults on Earth (since there would be no humans on the moon). But if tulips on the moon can convince politicians, I'm all for it.
  •
"The first flowers - tulips or arabidopsis, a plant widely used in research - could be grown in 2012 or 2015 according to Bernard Foing, chief scientist at the agency's research department." - Bernhard strikes again :-)

helium discussion - 0 views

  •
This link has a nice concise explanation of helium escaping the atmosphere. http://www.astronomynotes.com/solarsys/s3.htm (this link describes the mechanics of particles escaping the atmosphere, this includes escape velocity, thermal and nonthermal process) http://www.springerlink.com/content/k094u75188h64516/fulltext.pdf ( and if you are really interested, this paper discuss helium in the atmosphere (production and loss) in much more detail )

NASA will miss Congressional deadline for asteroid tracking - Science Fair - USATODAY.com - 0 views

  • he panel finds the 2005 order to find 90% of Earth-threatening asteroids 460 feet or larger infeasible,
  • No method for diverting asteroids has been experimentally demonstrated
  • Options include a "gravity tractor" orbiting slow-moving objects and tugging them off course with tidal tugs, a "kinetic" impact of a heavy spacecraft into an asteroid, or a nuclear explosion
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Unlike the dinosaurs, we are smart enough to do the math and figure out the answer that modest resources should be dedicated to the problem
    • Joris _

"we are smart enough" is a completely subjective comment. Reading the article it does not give the same impression :|

Report: Planets will collide in 5 billion years - 0 views

  • Mercury, Mars, Venus and Earth to smash into each other, either one at a time or all at once
  • by the end of that same 5 billion years the sun will have burned up its hydrogen and in a cooler state will inflate itself
  • the great "gas giants" of the outer solar system - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - are extremely stable in their orbits, so they could remain where they are for a much longer time
  •
Interesting, but obviously something is wrong. How the big giants can remain still if the inner planets and the sun vanish at the same time !
