What Parents Should Know about Facebook and MySpace | abc7chicago.com - 0 views

  •
This is a video from a news show in Chicago. Good one for parents to watch to see what kids are doing on facebook/myspace and to find out ways to protect them. I liked how the guy in the video said that kids don't just use it for social purposes, but that some of them have homework or school groups to help each other out. Even though that is probably 1% of teenagers it was still nice to see that aspect spoken about.

This may have been the worst interview I have ever seen, but the content was important. I did like how he gave a plug for academic uses as well.

Is Facebook really harming our brains? This article seems to think so.

Facebook is making our students more self-centered? I actually lol'd when I read that! I don't think that has anything to do with the reason our students seem more self-centered....

The Impact of Facebook on Our Students - 0 views

This lists some of the concerns and things that would need to happen if Facebook was allowed in schools. I guess there are some school systems that do allow it. I can't even imagine allowing our students to have access to FB during school hours.

Update: Hey Teacher, Leave Those Kids (and Their Internet) Alone! « Above the... - 1 views

  • Few things should be as important to our community as regaining and establishing our common sense that the classroom should be a place for learning and interaction. Visitors to classes, as well as many of our students, report that the rate of distracting Internet usage during class is astounding. Remarkably, usage appears to be contagious, if not epidemic. Several observers have reported that one student will visit a gossip site or shop for shoes, and within twenty minutes an entire row is shoe shopping. Half the time a student is called on, the question needs to be repeated. I confess that as I have researched this subject, I have been made aware how offensive it often is when phone calls are taken in public and when Blackberry and other e-mail devices are consulted during meetings. I have promised myself that I will no longer check my Blackberry under the table at University meetings.

CSRIU: Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use - 1 views

  • Numerous reports on filtering products have revealed that such products consistently over-block and thereby the prevent access to perfectly appropriate material. The reasons for such over-blocking --which could include technical inadequacies, process inadequacies, and bias -- are not easily discernable, due to the lack of access to necessary information.

      really????
  • The existence of these relationships and blocking categories raises the concern that the filtering products used in schools are inappropriately preventing students from accessing certain materials based on religious or other inappropriate bias.
    • Garry Marshall

This is a very legitimate and scary concern. Any time politics has an avenue into our schools, we should be concerned. I think this article does bring up how filtering is an issue that also deals with morality. Morality borders closely on religion. I think schools and communities still need to deal with the issue of morality. No one wants to define it and so we just skirt around the issue. We never have a good reason as to why something may be immoral, yet morality is clearly grounded in religion. Where do we draw the line and who determines what goes on filtering lists? Good questions!

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet - 1 views

When I was younger, I always hoped to be able to get rid of clunky VHS and DVDs. I love my Netflixx on demand!

This article gives a list of the advantages and disadvantages to using the internet. "Every day the internet continues to provide a new facility, something new that is immensely convenient and that makes life easier for many people. However this internet like any other technology is also like a Pandora's Box and contains some unwanted elements or disadvantage."

LOVE THIS ONE! Great site for parents to know how to keep their kids safe on facebook, and it is kind of a course on how to use facebook and how to access different things on your child's page. I might even need to read them so I know how to use facebook better!

'Sexting' Teens Can Go Too Far - 1 views

  •
This scares the crap out or me. Cell phone cameras have made it so easy for kids to take risque pictures and forward them on. What they don't realize is that once they have sent it out, it is out there for the whole world to see and most of them have not clue how harsh the consequences can be.. Iike the 17 year old in this artlice charged with child pornography after posting pictures of his 16 year old girlfriend online. YIKES!
  •
Stacy I have to laugh at all your posts, because most of them are against technology use, but I know you do like using technology. That being said this worries me too. Because how far does this go? Kids are not only texting naked pics, but have you ever seen the filth they post on their facebook pages? I have and it disgusts me and worries me. I wonder if boys who have nasty pics of girls could be given child porn charges like this boy who texted them, cause facebook reaches a whole lot more people than just 70 friends on your list or even 2,000 kids in a school.

Does the F-bomb belong on network TV? - The Week - 1 views

  • An appeals court has struck down the FCC ban on "fleeting curses" in live broadcasts. Is this a win for freedom of speech or vulgarity?
    • Byron Davis

I wonder if/how this will impact the current free speech arguments that are being made in defense of student posted work? Are we becoming more liberal?
  • Parents shouldn't be relying on the FCC, anyway: As the ruling demonstrated, it's futile for the FCC to try and enforce subjective standards of decency, says the Los Angeles Times in an editorial. "Besides, the FCC can't shield children from inappropriate programs — it has no authority over cable TV channels, and it can't stop kids from using DVRs or the Internet to watch late-night programming in the middle of the day." Luckily, parents now have better tools for blocking programs. The FCC should focus on promoting those methods.

I think that if parent knew and policed more what their kids were watching and /or spent more time with them than TV would not be a reason for kids to be cussing. We all watched some bad things when we were young, but we didn't dare cuss in front of our parents for fear of being slapped! This debate to me is more about bad parenting than bad TV. It is always easy to blame your bad parenting on TB. I enjoy using the F-Bomb just as much, if not more than the next guy (I am a New Yorker), but I certainly do NOT dream of cussing in front of kids.

Kate, This should be mandatory for ALL parents! I really enjoyed this... thanks for sharing.

I think all schools should offer a parents internet education. I really believe that some parents have no clue what really goes on when their children get on the internet.
  •
Wow! This is good, but this mom sure has a lot of time on her hands! I do agree that this should be something or something like this that all parents should do cause they don't have a clue what their kids are up to.

MTV's sexting show to air stark message for teens - 2 views

  •
I really, really liked this article because today's teens love MTV and I think they can totally relate to what this show/article is saying!
  •
Wow- this is going to be a great show! I think if students see what really happens to those who are affected by sexting that they will think twice before sending out a nude picture or message that may affect someone's self esteem and reputation in the long run.
