This device is just cheap enough that I think we may begin to see them in classrooms in the next few years IF schools do not advocate cell phone use in the classroom.

For Those Facebook Left Behind| The Committed Sardine - 0 views

  • Why you’d bother: LinkedIn is especially useful when you’re looking for a new job — or a new employee, which helps explain its 70-million-strong global membership — because you’re no longer limited to asking your immediate colleagues for referrals. Now you can ask colleagues of colleagues, which greatly expands your reach. LinkedIners can also vouch for one another as references.

  • There’s a game element, too: you earn points whenever you check in. In fact, whoever visits a certain place the most becomes its “mayor,” and may be rewarded by a giveaway from that business.

Update: Hey Teacher, Leave Those Kids (and Their Internet) Alone! « Above the... - 1 views

  • Few things should be as important to our community as regaining and establishing our common sense that the classroom should be a place for learning and interaction. Visitors to classes, as well as many of our students, report that the rate of distracting Internet usage during class is astounding. Remarkably, usage appears to be contagious, if not epidemic. Several observers have reported that one student will visit a gossip site or shop for shoes, and within twenty minutes an entire row is shoe shopping. Half the time a student is called on, the question needs to be repeated. I confess that as I have researched this subject, I have been made aware how offensive it often is when phone calls are taken in public and when Blackberry and other e-mail devices are consulted during meetings. I have promised myself that I will no longer check my Blackberry under the table at University meetings.

CSRIU: Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use - 1 views

  • The existence of these relationships and blocking categories raises the concern that the filtering products used in schools are inappropriately preventing students from accessing certain materials based on religious or other inappropriate bias.
    • Garry Marshall

This is a very legitimate and scary concern. Any time politics has an avenue into our schools, we should be concerned. I think this article does bring up how filtering is an issue that also deals with morality. Morality borders closely on religion. I think schools and communities still need to deal with the issue of morality. No one wants to define it and so we just skirt around the issue. We never have a good reason as to why something may be immoral, yet morality is clearly grounded in religion. Where do we draw the line and who determines what goes on filtering lists? Good questions!

I can tell you right now that a real train ride is much better than a virtual one. Besides, kids need real experiences. If you have had authentic experiences, you increase your communication and writing skills by having something to talk about.

Fear of classroom technology just doesn't compute | Education | guardian.co.uk - 1 views

  • Strong evidence to the contrary suggests that effective use of technology is helping teachers bring lessons to life.

We all need to remain critical of whether or not our lessons are truly engaging. Adding technology doesn't make it enriching and engaging automatically.

On teaching: Computers are no substitute for the real thing | Education | The Guardian - 1 views

  • The interactive whiteboards that were meant to radicalise our teaching have been proven to make no real difference, other than encouraging the kind of didactic, front-of-class teaching that is supposed to induce the least learning in our charges

I disagree here. Technology can and should be used as a reward - as long as the technology activity reinforces content, then why can't it also be enjoyable (Quia, etc)?
