Mr. Engel's Weblog Page - History Rules! - 2 views

  •
Just a small look at what I've done with my weblog in history class. It's been awhile since I've used it. Virtual share has been my major tool lately.

This is a great way to use a blog to support your students...having them post their learning as comments allows them to share their ideas and learning with the whole class rather than just the teacher. What's Virtual Share?

VirtualShare is a server in Henrico County that we use to share files with our students and they can drop their files to us. Very soon Henrico will drop that in favor of SchoolSpace (a division of Angel which I believe was bought out by Blackboard).

  • ORRIS: But couldn't they just do that from a TV show though? Ms. EMONES: No, they couldn't. NORRIS: Emones says that traveling to places feels better than TV. She says it feels more real.

Here's the interesting part...what do we get from "real" vs. ""virtual" travel? How important is it for schools to provide these experiences to kids?
  • she's never been on a train before

I can tell you right now that a real train ride is much better than a virtual one. Besides, kids need real experiences. If you have had authentic experiences, you increase your communication and writing skills by having something to talk about.

That last quote cracks me up! NORRIS: Emones says that traveling to places feels better than TV. She says it feels more real. REALLY??!! I would hope so!

This site is wonderful in the classroom enabling students to visit various places around the state of Virginia without leaving the classroom! It was created by 4 guys who work for HCPS.

I love that site! It's great to take kids on virtual field trips and if their teacher is on a PODcast like that, then it helps students relate to teachers and generates great discussion.
