Virginia Department of Education: Open Education and Policy - Creative Commons - 1 views

  • Traditional textbooks have served us well, especially for me as a beginning teacher, because the textbook was the curriculum. The concept of looking at different ways to deliver textbooks could be as simple as putting it online or making it able to be viewed on an iPad or similar device. It could be more complex by including lots of multimedia and other interactive resources. But fundamentally, even experienced teachers are looking to textbooks for guidance on what to teach, what the content should be, and what the process should be. In developing electronic textbooks, you have to hold onto those concepts. The textbook is a teacher’s guideline and roadmap. Any of the multimedia and enhanced materials that you can include to enliven instruction would attest to that.
  • We can energize students with technology, and there’s a lot of gold to be panned in exploring many new teaching methods
  • OER would allow many opportunities and latitude to have really good and engaging instruction. The sharing of resources and best practices would help teachers do other things to enhance the learning of not only mainstream kids, but gifted students too. Struggling students can use these resources to review content in other formats or at different paces.

Social Networking Goes to School| The Committed Sardine - 2 views

  •
Anyone think this is a bad idea? I am thinking about asking if we can set up a school group.
  •
I think it is an interesting idea. I know that many parents and students are told to "check the school's website" for more information. If there is a FB page with updates, I feel that many more parents/students/(and alumni) will find out the information more regularly. Why fight it, embrace it.

Steve Hargadon: Web 2.0 Is the Future of Education - 0 views

    • Kate Puschak

I thought that this was such a bold statement. That Web 2.0 will have a greater impact than the printing press. This comment really got me thinking...could this author be right? What are your thoughts?
    • Byron Davis

While I agree that the statement is a bold one, I believe it has the potential to be true. It's a matter of perspective. The printing press allowed for mass production that exposed ever increasing numbers of people to information and ideas. The internet used in Web 2.0 fashion offers the ability to not only instantaneously expose anyone with internet access ot information and ideas (for free), but also allows readers to enter into the discussion and be authors (like I am doing now instead of just reading it in an article). This is exponentially more powerful and yet so subtle. As a small modification of something that already existed, it does not make the dramatic grand entrance that the printing press made.
  • I believe that the read/write Web, or what we are calling Web 2.0, will culturally, socially, intellectually, and politically have a greater impact than the advent of the printing press.

Too Much Technology Can Be Harmful - 2 views

  •
I really enjoyed reading this article and tend to agree! Altough we live in a very technological world and I Iove my computer and all of the great things I can do; it often makes us very lazy and often out of touch with reality.
  •
I do agree that technology takes the personal out of a lot of things. This article reminded me of a quote from "Sweet Home Alabama." When Dorthea says to Melanie "He doesn't want to get ATMs on the account of no personal contact." I also agree with the idea of kids not reading as much or doing as much work and getting lazy about education.

Cell phones in the classroom - O'Reilly Radar - 1 views

  •
Here is an interesting article on cell phone use in the classroom. Is it really realistic to ban them at the door? This article gives ideas on how they can be used in instruction.
  •
One of the reasons for banning cell phones is the cheating that occurs with texting. This year we were required (by the state) to take up cell phones for the End Of Course tests for our SOLs. Now about the article... I liked some of the suggestions on the use of cellphones but you would need a classroom set like the class in this article to be successful. I know that teachers have always worked beyond contract time with planning and grading but with this technology comes the expection of even more from us because now we would have to monitor acceptable use 24/7.

Travel Club Returns To Pick Up New Generation : NPR - 1 views

  • ORRIS: But couldn't they just do that from a TV show though? Ms. EMONES: No, they couldn't. NORRIS: Emones says that traveling to places feels better than TV. She says it feels more real.

Here's the interesting part...what do we get from "real" vs. ""virtual" travel? How important is it for schools to provide these experiences to kids?
  • she's never been on a train before
    • Garry Marshall

I can tell you right now that a real train ride is much better than a virtual one. Besides, kids need real experiences. If you have had authentic experiences, you increase your communication and writing skills by having something to talk about.

That last quote cracks me up! NORRIS: Emones says that traveling to places feels better than TV. She says it feels more real. REALLY??!! I would hope so!

The Curious SEO: Internet Ethics, Self-Policing and Transparency-Who's the Judge? | Sea... - 0 views

  • An interesting topic came up today within Search Mojo regarding the idea of online transparency and self-policing. Obviously, ethics comes in to play in self-policing. Whose ethics? That’s the question. Who are you to say what is and is not ethical in how I approach and execute things online?
  •
I read one of Dr. Richardson's responses to a post and she was talking about self-policing so I wanted to explore that a little more. I think this article is fueled by emotions from a family issue, but it does ask some good questions!

Making the Case for Mobile Computing - 0 views

  • “The enthusiasm for [mobile learning] is based on observation and just expert thinking, and not on a lot of hard data,
    • Kate Puschak

I think this statement is so true. So many people are afraid to experiment and try new things unless there is hard evidence that supports the idea.
  • using hand-held devices in the classroom can improve students’ motivation, engagement, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills.
    • Kate Puschak

I tend to agree with this statement but I think there needs to be some boundaries with it all.
    • Andrew Stevens

Definitely agree with you. Great article though
  •
This is a great site listing all of the pros of using mobile computing in the classroom!

Mr. Engel's Weblog Page - History Rules! - 2 views

  •
Just a small look at what I've done with my weblog in history class. It's been awhile since I've used it. Virtual share has been my major tool lately.
  •
This is a great way to use a blog to support your students...having them post their learning as comments allows them to share their ideas and learning with the whole class rather than just the teacher. What's Virtual Share?
  •
VirtualShare is a server in Henrico County that we use to share files with our students and they can drop their files to us. Very soon Henrico will drop that in favor of SchoolSpace (a division of Angel which I believe was bought out by Blackboard).
