Fewer instructions, better structures - Ewan McIntosh | Digital Media & Learning - 1 views

Interesting post - about games in education, but actually about all learning experiences. My next big problem (wrong word?) is how to do this kind of stuff inside a school that's moving very slowly or not at all in this direction. I'm all for being disruptive, but what happens to those students who get taught by me in a student-centered, project based if they then move on to someone who has a more teacher centered approach the following year?

What happens to those students who get taught by me in a student-centered, project based if they then move on to someone who has a more teacher centered approach the following year? They either revert to being passive learners or they demand more from the next teacher who then has a choice.... Also, expectations from whole school need to be cranked up if slow in this regard. (However, I do understand why some schools are finding it hard to move on, it requires energy and drive to do this, things which are being drained from our schools and leaders because of so many pressures and anxieties) . As they say though, our students only get one shot at this ......

Fascinating and practical post from Oliver. Interesting it ties in with the findings from talking to my year 7 form for purpos/ed - above everything else they wanted more choice in their curriculum.

The Assembly is welcoming comments on this document.
  • ...3 more comments...

Will comments be attributed? There is a lot of information in here. How is it communicated to the people and is there a role for schools at all?
  •
I dont think comments will be attributed - but if anyone has any firm views on the stuff in this document then now's the time to voice them. Thought the document might be of interest to all of you so that you know the direction the Assembly intends to head digitally over the next few years

I have to say, it doesn't seem very realistic to me. The author notes that they are being ambitious but I'm not sure they appreciate HOW ambitious this is.

Use funds for kit and sessions like TeachMeets such as OAPMeets or something PeopleMeets - not in libraries and schools but pubs and cafes - also put books etc into pubs and cafes as well - not just digital wales but learning wales! & don't use funds for glossy booklets and stuff.
  •
Nice ideas, but I'd question the effectiveness of putting books in pubs. No-one I know would put down a beer on a Saturday night so that they can read about photosynthesis or mitosis. Books in pubs are more likely to serve as coasters or something for people to throw when the fights break out! Or maybe I just have a poor choice of pub. ;)

Call to let staff spend time with the best- TES 15/04/11 - 2 views

I was there & heard these talks. I wanted to talk about #addcym, TeachMeets, Twitter and all the excellent practice that is out there and the means that the professionals are going to to share. Clearly people presenting weren't aware of this which makes #addcym etc crucial to this sharing.
  •
Thanks Vicki. I wasn't there, but saw the ppts etc. Don't think the conclusions are rocket science, it's actually what we advocate already, and I think we should use precious money to fund the actions ( ie teachers sharing/visiting) rather than spending another year researching obvious and common sense solutions. That's IMHO obviously and all my own views!
