The Heinz Center's "A Survey of Climate Change Adaptation Planning" examines worldwide adaptation planning resources, looking at eight adaptation plans and 18 adaptation planning efforts. The report says adaptation planning will be critical as city, state and regional planners face challenges, such as sea-level rise, caused by climate change.
Physical impacts and adaptation
Scientists warn the expected impacts of climate change will include rising temperatures, sea level rise, changing rainfall patterns and increased storminess. Adaptation is the process of preparing for and adapting to the impact of these changes on our economy, environment, infrastructure and way of life, in order to minimise the risks and maximise the opportunities.
The report concluded that adaptation then is necessary and will bring benefits. The report found that we need to increase the planning capacity of industries, communities and regions so they can engage more effectively in adaptation research and development. We need to communicate our knowledge and develop practical adaptation tools.
Funded by the European Commission and co-ordinated by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the UK, ADAM (Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: supporting European climate policy) is an integrated research project running from 2006 to 2009 that will lead to a better understanding of the trade-offs and conflicts that exist between adaptation and mitigation policies. ADAM will support EU policy development in the next stage of the development of the Kyoto Protocol and will inform the emergence of new adaptation strategies for Europe
2008 the Federal Cabinet adopted the German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change. This creates a framework for adapting to the impacts of climate change in Germany. It primarily describes the contribution of the Federation, thus acting as a guide for other actors. The strategy lays the foundation for a medium-term, step-by-step process undertaken in cooperation with the federal Länder and other civil groups and aimed at assessing the risks of climate change, identifying the possible need for action, defining appropriate goals and developing and implementing options for adaptation measures.

Seminars were held in September 2008 in Edinburgh and Reading to provide a forum for active discussion of the institutional capacity of the UK to adapt to climate change, and to use the discussion to inform the direction and areas of detailed enquiry for the RCEP study "Adapting the UK to Climate Change". CBA-X is a shared online resource designed to bring together and grow the CBA community. It provides a site for the exchange of up-to-date information about community-based adaptation, including news, events, case-studies, tools, policy resources, and videos.
A study investigating the potential public responses to climate change and the adaptive implications under different institutional settings. The study also includes a comparison of individual and group deliberative responses to scenarios of future climate change.
A community of adaptation specialists, sharing the latest information on adaptation strategies, measures, tools, research and analysis, and highlighting best practice and implementation.
The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Adaptation Initiative has been established to assist councils that are already pursing strategies to reduce their corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions to plan and prepare for the projected impacts of climate change.
Yesterday, I saw a fascinating presentation by Dianne Saxe: a lawyer who explained the legal liabilities that could arise as the result of climate change. The particular focus was on the government, and ways in which failure to effectively adapt to climate change could produce a legal risk.
Adapting to climate change
The global impacts of climate change are already becoming evident and further climate changes are inevitable due to the greenhouse gas emissions already in the atmosphere. In New Zealand climate change could have significant impacts on our economy, environment and society. The impacts are likely to vary between the different regions of New Zealand.
The draft London Climate Change Adaptation Strategy identifies the key risks to London and Londoners and prioritises the actions necessary to manage those risks.
This programming site has been developed to provide guidance on preparing proposals on adaptation-related projects for submission to UNDP-GEF. The site is intended as a companion site to UNDP's intranet and UNDP/GEF's programming manual which outlines streamlined policies and procedures for submitting project proposals.
