"Implementing Change at SJUSD (San Jose Unified School District): An Unfinished Case Study"

As a higher education employee, it's interesting to me to hear about what the new trends are in terms of programs at other universities compared with our own. This article both saddens and inspires me, because it discusses how the study of humanities may be in danger, because it is not considered "practical" and does not always lead to a definite career path. I am reminded of how some K-12 administrators are taking away programs in the arts, to free up more time for math and science, subjects that are considered more important because of statewide testing. The article inspires me, because it goes further, to mention what some specific colleges are doing to increase focus and enrollment in humanities fields, and how the colleges and universities are trying to hold on to these fields, despite the low enrollment. I would be interested to see how these techniques end up working, and how the schools plan on evaluating them.

If you have a chance to read this book, it really gets you to think about how we have structured our work environments potentially to our overall disadvantage. I heard an interview with Schwartz on NPR, was intrigued, so got the book. He talks about four basic human needs: Sustainability/Physical; Security/Emotional; Self-Expression/Mental; and Significance/Spiritual. Schwartz asserts that we need elements of all four in our lives, including at work, to be fully functioning and growing.

This YouTube clip shows a talk given by Sir Ken Robinson on how we need to revolutionize our educational systems. It resonates with what Myles Horton said in his interview about "molding" vs. "liberating." Schools have been about preparing students to become productive members in an industrial based society. Like Horton, Robinson argues that we need to break free of that model. Robinson also has a couple of good talks on Ted.com related to education. Some of us watched his talk on how schools kill creativity when we took Creative Thinking.
