I love CUNY and I love public education. Blackboard is a parasite on both. Writing free software is the best way I know to disrupt the awful relationship between companies like Blackboard and vulnerable populations like CUNY undergraduates. Good list of why Bb is bad, including It forces, and reinforces, an entirely teacher-centric pedagogical model.

Todd describes how he solved the problem of having to give a presentation in a room that doesn't have a projector. He uploaded his presentation to SlideShare, then created a QR code that points to the presentation. He then printed an image of the QR code and will make that available to the audience. Those attendees who have smartphones can point to the QR code and go right to the presentation on SlideShare. For step by step instructions, see Todd's article on Social Times.

Whenever you have a particular assignment or activity, you can create a project for it, then define teams of members, each with its own unique pages, files, and permissions. Team content (that is, pages and files) are grouped together, separate from the main area of the wiki. That way, students in teams can do their group work completely independently from other teams.
