"Retrieving legacy files As the old dropbox knew no separation of files by assignment (one of its major limitations), it was not possible to move these files into assignments during the upgrade, and there is no storage area facility available into which they could have been moved, so they are not directly accessible within the application after an upgrade or in courses restored from earlier versions. The old dropbox code used Perl, which has been completely removed from the web application in release 9, so the dropbox cannot be accessed anymore to retrieve the legacy files. A rudimentary Java-based interface is being provided to enable each user individually to download any legacy files they may wish to retrieve. These files can then be submitted in newly created assignments as desired or stored in one's Virtual Hard Drive inside the Blackboard Content System, if that is licensed by the institution and enabled by the system administrator. Unfortunately this interface is not exposed via any link in the application. System administrators or helpdesk staff can however make available such a link to their users, either assisting them with file retrieval on an individual basis or by publishing the download link to their users, e.g. in a system announcement. Community Engagement license holders may also wish to add an HTML portal module with this link, thus simplifying the download process, or add it as external link to the tool panel (in the portal menu column). Varied Assignment Due Dates Based on Section

So you probably all already know that Google Calendar is a lifesaver when it comes to organizing classes. The problem, though, is that sometimes professors don't create a Calendar-ready syllabus for us! Don't fret - here I'll share how I've managed to harness the power of Google Docs to streamline a Calendar for each of my classes, so hopefully you can do the same. Start by loading the template located at http://bit.ly/importtemplate, then rename it to correspond to the name of the class syllabus you're working on. Leaving the header row, fill in the assignment and due date, as well as the time.

During his days as a clerk for the federal government in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel Hawthorne began crafting some of his most notable works. The Hawthorne in Salem site celebrates his life and times in this very unique place. Created by the North Shore Community College in nearby Danvers, the site offers up an interactive timeline of dates from Hawthorne's life. Visitors can browse through six sections, including Life & Times, Literature, and Buildings and Houses. The Maps area is a delight, offering maps of Salem Village, Salem in Hawthorne's time, as well as Salem today. My article about the use of Twitter in Orange Class (@ClassroomTweets) was recently published in English 4-11. I have changed some of the ways in which we use Twitter even within the short time between writing and publication of the article. I plan on writing another more up-to-date reflection on how we have been using Twitter soon but in the meantime hopefully this will provide you with the context in which our work is based. As this is the first article I have ever had published I would value any comments or feedback as to what you think about it.

Video that might appeal to K-12 teachers. Teachers talk about how it gives the students control over what they are doing. With access from any computer, students are able to work on their assignments virtually anywhere. Whether they are out from school, on vacation or working from home, they can stay up-to-date with assignments and group projects.

Consumer Reports, a longtime trusted name in product ratings and reviews, has today released its annual "State of the Net" report, which finds that over half (52%) of social network users post risky information online. Among the transgressions: using weak passwords, listing full birth dates, ignoring privacy settings and making mention of when you're away from home, to name a few.

Visualizing Cultures was launched at MIT in 2002 to explore the potential of the Web for developing innovative image-driven scholarship and learning. The VC mission is to use new technology and hitherto largely inaccessible visual materials to reconstruct the past as people of the time visualized the world (or imagined it to be). Topical units to date focus on Japan in the modern world and early-modern China. The thrust of these explorations extends beyond Asia per se, however, to address "culture" in much broader ways-cultures of modernization, war and peace, consumerism, images of "Self" and "Others," and so on. Images of every sort are introduced and examined here-in partnership with contributing institutions and collections, and with the collaboration of experts devoted to transcending the printed word and hard-bound text.

Like any good spreadsheet program, Google Spreadsheets supports a wide array of built-in functions.There are old standbys like SUM and AVERAGE. Mathematical, financial or statistical functions to help you crunch numbers. Even functions that manipulate dates and text. Enter them manually, or use the formulas tab to find the functions you need.

As ambitious as we are as students, we're not always guaranteed good grades or perfect scores despite long nights and exam crams. With nothing more than a few syllabi and red ink, keeping track of your grades and measuring your performance with a calculator is outdated and unnecessary. Weighted grades and a failed exam can turn a trip to the calculator into a worrisome mess of numbers and unmet expectations. In your pocket, however, you already have all the tools necessary for instant grade-ification. Time Search is a good general resource for history teachers and students. Simply enter a year, press "go" and you're shown a list of significant events that happened in that year. Scroll up or down the list to see events that happened early or late in the year. Time Search lists events that happened worldwide. You can select historical themes to narrow your list of events. You can also narrow results by selecting a region of the world. Next to each item in your events list you will see icons indicating availability of related images, quick text references, and map references. Not all icons appear for all events

This is our first large scale production "end of semester" with Canvas. We tried to capture the most important points without overwhelming you with details. Additionally, as Instructure receives feedback, Canvas behavior may change from what is outlined here. We will do our best to keep you informed with the latest changes from Instructure. At this time, there is no set time limit for courses to exist in Canvas. The college is discussing an appropriate time frame. Until this time frame is decided, we will not be deleting courses. We still recommend taking steps to back up important items from your course, especially the grade book and course structure.
