Does the Digital Classroom Enfeeble the Mind? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • We see the embedded philosophy bloom when students assemble papers as mash-ups from online snippets instead of thinking and composing on a blank piece of screen. What is wrong with this is not that students are any lazier now or learning less. (It is probably even true, I admit reluctantly, that in the presence of the ambient Internet, maybe it is not so important anymore to hold an archive of certain kinds of academic trivia in your head.)
  • Roughly speaking, there are two ways to use computers in the classroom. You can have them measure and represent the students and the teachers, or you can have the class build a virtual spaceship. Right now the first way is ubiquitous, but the virtual spaceships are being built only by tenacious oddballs in unusual circumstances. More spaceships, please.

Jaron Lanier's article in the NY times. --- Adding to an already rich life, my father decided in middle age to become an elementary-school teacher in a working-class neighborhood in New Mexico. To this day, people who run grocery stores and work on construction sites, and who are now in late middle age themselves, come out when I'm visiting to tell me how Mr. Lanier changed their lives. Go up to any adult with a good life, no matter what his or her station, and ask if a teacher made a difference, and you'll always see a face light up. The human element, a magical connection, is at the heart of successful education, and you can't bottle it.

Where Social Learning Thrives | Learn at All Levels | Fast Company - 0 views

Social learning is not just the technology of social media, although it makes use of it. It is not merely the ability to express yourself in a group of opt-in friends. Social learning combines social media tools with a shift in the corporate culture, a shift that encourages ongoing knowledge transfer and connects people in ways that make learning a joy.

Daniel Pink's lecture about his book, Drive. While directly addresses the business world but the connections to education are apparent. Speaks to why incentive pay for teachers is a ridiculous idea. Even why grades are a lousy incentive for students.

The University of Georgia - 9thPeriod Academic Networking - 1 views

"Social media is transforming our culture, opening new ways to connect with others and promoting the growth of communities of interest. Higher education is already feeling the impact of social media, and I think we're just at the beginning of that process. 9thPeriod offers a way for the University to leverage social media for pedagogical ends. I'm happy that the Learning Technologies Grant program has funded this opportunity to explore how social media can help support UGA's mission."

Just a lighthearted reminder that, even if the lure of the connected digital world gets people to skimp on the Gilligan's Island reruns, that doesn't necessarily mean their replacement behaviors will be any more productive. They could instead bring an ever greater capacity for distraction and disengagement and slingshot precision.

Bboogle is software that lets you embed Google Documents (including spreadsheets, and presentations) , Google Calendars and Google Sites in a Blackboard course site. Everyone with access to the course can get to linked Google content without logging in a second time. Students and instructors are automatically added as collaborators to the documents, even if they join after the link is made.   Bboogle is also an open source project that you can join. We are looking for skilled developers and educational institutions who want to contribute time to creating the best possible connection between Google Apps and Blackboard. Please see our list of Frequently Asked Questions at  FrequentlyAskedQuestions?

KSC Faculty at Institute on Global Learning This summer, a team of Keene State faculty members from all three academic schools will participate in "Shared Futures: General Education for a Global Century," an institute sponsored by the American Association of Colleges and Universities to help faculty integrate global perspectives across the curriculum. The institute will be held in Ellicott City, Md., from July 31 to August 5, and will draw faculty from 32 colleges and universities. During the fall 2011 semester, the core Keene State team will draw in faculty and staff from across campus to implement the goals and strategies developed at the institute. By building a network of educators dedicated to this integrative work, Shared Futures facilitates curricular change and faculty development on campuses nationwide. Through an online social network, the initiative hopes to create new connections between educators and new opportunities for partnership and learning. Keene State faculty members attending the institute include professors Charles Weed (political science), Margaret Henning (health sciences), Patricia Pedroza (women's and gender studies), and Rich Blatchly (chemistry). For more information, contact Prof. Weed at cweed@keene.edu or visit the Shared Futures page.
