Problem-based approach allows teachers to use economic problems and follow a set of disciplined and strategic analytic steps. The intent is that students learn to contextualize, understand, reason, and solve what may at the outset have been a problem for which they had no analytic tools. It is an inquiry-based pedagogy rooted in the constructivist ideas and developmental learning theories of John Dewey and Jean Piaget.

Las estrategias para desarrollar aprendizajes basados en la formulación de una problemática y organizados en base a un proyecto (de ahora en adelante PBL = problem based and project organised learning) tratan de cambiar las estructuras de los estudios, puesto que los sistemas PBL son fundamentalmente distintos de la enseñanza tradicional universitaria. Sin embargo, los sistemas PBL también se distinguen entre sí. En este artículo se discute la definición del sistema PBL como sistema de aprendizaje y como modelo de enseñanza.
