How to Build Trust Among a Virtual Team | Northwest Staffing Firms | Provisional Blog - 0 views

  •
"Building Trust Among Your Virtual Team Members November 1st, 2011 From 2000 through 2009, the number of employees that worked remotely tripled in size - and that number is expected to continue to grow rapidly. In addition, in 2011, 10% of workers reported telecommuting at least once a week, up from 8% in 2007. But despite this increase, the challenge remains: How can supervisors properly manage virtual workers to deliver positive results? The answer is simpler - and more complicated - than you might think. It's all about trust. As one of the Northwest's top staffing firms, we know that virtual teams aren't unlike on-site teams in that trust is a key component of success and productivity. Many workplace experts agree that trust is perhaps the most important element of a harmonious and efficient work environment - and that attitude holds true for employees working remotely, as well. In fact, in the book, Virtual Team Success, authors Darleen DeRosa and Richard Lepsinger shared findings from a global study, which concluded that top performing virtual teams reported higher levels of trust than teams that were less successful. According to the authors, trust is an essential ingredient for virtual team success. While it might only take seconds to destroy, building trust can take a while, especially in a virtual environment, where there isn't nearly as much personal interaction. But it's definitely possible and will ultimately contribute to the team's overall success. To help you get started, here are some tips to keep in mind. Establish clear and open communication from the beginning. Make sure that all team members have each others' contact information and preferred means of contact. Set the ground rules. This is critically important before the start of the project so that everyone is clear on expectations. For instance, let each member know you expect a progress report via email by the end of the day Friday. Use online tools, li

"Email Use In Virtual Teams by Francis Norman on December 9, 2014 inShare iStock_000011296304XSmallCommunications in virtual team environments can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield with an out of date map, you know where many of the issues lie but there is always a small doubt somewhere in your mind that an unknown trap is about to ensnare you. So too is the challenge of email use in virtual Teams, most of the time things are fine then suddenly something will explode in your face and leave you feeling scared and unsure of where to hear next. Email Trust Challenges As Teams become more dispersed, and particularly as they are separated by increasingly large timezone differences, the need to resort to asynchronous, written communication over verbal, synchronous communications increases the reliance on email. The increased email use pushes individuals and Teams to become more concise in their communications, removing many of the pleasantries and verbal checks and balances we all take for granted when communicating verbally or face to face. Without these checks and balances, the communications will inevitably become more technically focussed and without the human personality in the communications, building and maintaining a trusting environment become harder and relationships become more transactional rather than collaborative. The emails become more a series of instructions, demands and responses where a verbal equivalent would comprise requests and answers with personal discussion and input in between. Additionally, once a high reliance on email begins it is easy to become over loaded with email, the 50 to 100 new emails that greet a virtual team member on a morning can seem like an unending list of tasks without any real priority or pleasantry, as such the recipient will do their best to respond to as many as possible but will inevitably start to slip behind, leaving somme virtual colleagues wondering where their response is and whether their virtual c

Yael Zofi | A Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams Virtual work arrangements are on the rise as traditional work situations are giving way to more flexible ones. The concept of an office in a fixed location that you have to go to is becoming less universal. As executives engage in stringent cost cutting, office space and their attendant expenses shrink, and fewer employees spend their workday at adjoining workstations. Today, knowledge workers can be productive anywhere, thanks to mobile devices, faster network access and online collaboration tools available in coffee houses, inside homes and on city streets. While organizations have long established operations in multiple locations, colleagues are increasingly asked to collaborate across time zones and continents, with shared responsibility for outcomes. In my consulting practice I have seen large conglomerates organize projects around Teams that reside in different countries, fully expecting that they will get deliverables out the door quickly within budgetary and time constraints. These Teams follow the sun, handing off work products to each other. This is all made possible by technology, the great enabler that helps us create efficiencies and fosters quick decision-making. But what about the human connection? Although team members do not share the same location, they must still work collaboratively to meet common goals. What keeps these individuals organized, communicative, and productive without ongoing face-to-face interactions? And how will organizations ensure the human connection that fue

"Virtual teams: a literature review ByNader Ebrahim, S Ahmed and Zahari Taha Abstract In the competitive market , virtual teams represent a growing response to the need for fasting time-to- market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers . Nowadays, companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness. Despite virtual teams growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions o f virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams , different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considering the people, process and technology point of view and underlying characteristics of virtual teams and challenges they entail. Finally, we have identified an d extended 12 key factors that need to be considered, and describes a methodology focused on supporting virtual team working, with a new approach that has not been specifically addressed in the existing literature and some guide line for future research extracted. The study focused on the influence of virtual research and development (R&D) Teams within Malaysian manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The specific objective of the study is better understanding of the application of collaborative technologies in business, to find the effective factors to assist SMEs to remain competitive in the future. The paper stresses to find an answer for a question "Is there any relationship between company size, Internet connection facility and virtuality?". The survey data shows SMEs are now technologically capable of performing the virtual collaborative team, but the infrastructure usage is less. SMEs now have the necessary technology to begin the implementation process of collaboration tools to reduce research and development (R&D) time, costs and increase productivity. So, the manager of R&D should take the potentials of virtual Teams into account. "Virtual Teaming As a 21st century freelance editor I have extensive experience with effective virtual teaming, otherwise known as working remotely, connecting and communicating with clients through information communication technology such as email, telephone and video conferencing (Skype). While many individual clients are quite comfortable with virtual team work with their editor, many academic organisations, businesses, and institutions are now learning of the benefits of virtual teaming and are increasingly turning to virtual team work as a cost effective way to hire the best people - specialists who can get an assignment done quickly and well. In today's increasingly globalised world, with it's increasingly casualized workforce, virtual team work is an essential business practice for any organization that has, or wishes to have, a truly global vision and reach. In the past I have worked virtually as a copy-editor and transcriber with the Max Planck Institute as well as a proofreader with Napier University. And I currently work as manager of virtual teams with the Visual Anthropology Review (Book Reviews Editor) and Versita (Managing/Aquisitions Editor). As a manager of virtual teams I use Internet communication and the quick and accurate sharing of documents through email, Dropbox and other cloud-based systems, and team-collaboration tools such as Microsoft SharePoint to communicate with other team members and share work. By organising the work of various virtual teams across the globe I am able to use differences in time-zone and regional specialisation to best advantage. My experience with virtual teaming also means that I am familiar with employment laws and the organization of contracts in a variety of countries across Europe and North America. These are skills that, as your freelance editor, I will bring to every project that I complete for you. You can be assured that our communications will be clear, concise, and effective; that work w"

As technology workers continue to become un-tethered, often without warning to the enterprise and its IT infrastructure, it is increasingly the responsibility of the enterprise to provide the education and change management necessary for the employee's success in a virtual environment. . » Add a comment By Kazim Isfahani March 05, 2002 - CSO - RFG believes IT executives must take deliberate process steps to ensure the success of their virtual project teams. By understanding the people, process, and technologies that foster a collaborative environment, IT executives can leverage their existing technology resources, while providing employees with the ability to contribute their intellectual and knowledge capital regardless of their location. Business Imperatives: Today's business environment demands a new philosophy for accomplishing tasks. As technology workers continue to become un-tethered, often without warning to the enterprise and its IT infrastructure, it is increasingly the responsibility of the enterprise to provide the education and change management necessary for the employee's success in a virtual environment. IT executives should ensure that the appropriate education and competencies are developed among its core staff to leverage the full potential of a successful virtual team. Successful virtual teams involve a strong combination of people, process, and technology. For people to work seamlessly across boundaries, distance, and time, collaboration tools and services to catalyze productivity must be readily available. IT executives should evaluate tools from emerging professional services automation (PSA) vendors, project management and collaboration players, as well as leading audio and video streaming technology that can support the activities of a virtual team. However, the team taxonomic literature suffers from a few limitations. First, many taxonomies claim to classify teams into mutually exclusive classes, yet when examined closely, are not. Second, some of the most well-known taxonomies are descriptive of various tasks teams engage in, but not of the holistic team-level properties that define different types of teams. A clear understanding of both is necessary if human resource development (HRD) professionals are to develop and train different teams effectively. Therefore, the purpose of the current article is twofold: to present an integrative taxonomy of task types and a set of team-level characteristics that have been carefully synthesized from the prior literature and to explain how these tools can be used in conjunction to inform team-oriented HRD research and practice. " Vivian Giang and Max Nisen | Sep. 20, 2012, 12:29 PM | 1,824 | inShare42 Email More Skype Chat Wikimedia Wikigiraffes This post originally appeared at Open Forum. The expanding global and digital marketplace has made it possible for professionals to virtually work together no matter where they are in the world. It's simple, efficient and cheap, but the lack of face-to-face time can also have a negative effect on your connection with your team, especially if you haven't already developed a core understanding of one another. To get a better understanding of the challenges that may be faced when working on a project virtually, we spoke to Penelope Trunk, co-founder of Brazen Careerist who decided to move to Wisconsin even though her company takes place in Washington, D.C. Trunk continues to blog about working issues and trends from the Midwest. Here's are three main challenges that arise when working on a project virtually-and how you can overcome them: 1. Lack of intimacy. A recent post at the Harvard Business Review says that in the absence of personal contact, people can get more brusque and less conscious of other people's needs. For example, a coworker may not think twice about e-mailing a colleague who works remotely with a last-minute request for time-sensitive information, whereas if they were working side-by-side with that person, they'd be more considerate and try harder to get the request in earlier. "There's an intimacy with face-to-face," Trunk says. "Even five minutes of face time can make up for months and months of communicating online." Since you don't have a "face-to-face relationship" with your team members, make more of an effort to clearly convey what you want in your digital communication or risk wasting too much time resolving misinterpretations and misunderstandings. 2. Not enough communication. Whether your team decides to split up the workload or work closely throughout the project, you need to constantly communica

Over time, teams progress into successful units; however, sometimes, they regress into a situation where morale is worse than when the team was created. We explain how such opposing group outcomes can arise by examining team members' (dis)confirmation of expectations in line with the development of trust. We argue that the process of (dis)confirmation of expectations created based on early swift trust is crucial in defining the direction of team development (progression or regression) because it gives rise to emotions which further underpin (dis)trust. We present six sets of propositions which taken together construct a framework for understanding the role of (dis)confirmation and subsequent emotions during the process of trust updating and of team development. We provide a conceptual view of individuals' experiences within a team and their impact on team dynamics in a way which could form the basis of future empirical testing.
