Team members may not naturally know how to interact effectively across space and time. Besides, every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to this pressing need there should be some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product development architecture under a virtual-team umbrella. The paper describes all the major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual team, Stage-Gate system and finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system. It also provides the guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual team in new products development. Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers . Nowadays, companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness. Despite virtual teams growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions o f virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams , different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considering the people, process and technology point of view and underlying characteristics of virtual teams and challenges they entail. Part of adapting and accepting globalization is to work with a heterogeneous group of people located in different parts of the world with different perceptions, different attitudes and varied characteristics. The challenge for software development organizations in this scenario is to source, coordinate and manage an adept pool of professionals and help them work for complementing tasks of distributed teams, keep them motivated so as to practice extra role behaviors which will in turn help the organization grow its business. However, in order that distributed employees feel motivated, valued and respected; the organizations through their employee friendly policies create an environment for people to perceive organizational support and role efficacy. A fairly supportive system and effective utilization of competencies is likely to create a sense of organization being fair to employees. This research examined the relationships between perceptions of organizational support, role efficacy and organizational citizenship behavior by examining the mediating effects of organizational justice. A questionnaire was given to 970 software professionals. The responses of 276 people selected through a convenience sample across globally located software organizations was used for the study. The data collected from the responses was analyzed using factor analysis to rule out factors not contributing to the study. Further the data was analyzed using correlation coefficient and hierarchical regression tests to find out the relationship and mediating effects between variables. Advances in technology have made it easier to organize and manage dispersed groups of people. And competitive pressures and the needs of today's global market workforce have made virtual teams a necessity for some organizations. But the fact that virtual teams continue to grow in popularity doesn't mean they're always being used and managed properly. We found that many organizations simply recycle the same guidelines for t co-located teams and hope for the best. And frankly, that system wasn't working. But why are so many virtual teams falling to meet performance expectations? To answer this question, we asked hundreds of virtual team members and leaders to select the top three challenges that hinder their teams' performance. Here's what we found. Lack of face-to-face contact was cited as the top challenge. However, we did find that lack of face-to-face contact was less of an issue for teams that had an initial face-to-face meeting within the first 30-90 days of working virtually together. Overall, these teams were more effective than teams that never met up front. Communication was a close second. Many people reported that members of their teams changed monthly and having team members that are here today and gone tomorrow makes it difficult to find the most effective ways to communicate with one another and to build relationships effectively. Large teams of people with unclear roles was also seen as a key challenge. Add to the frequent change in team members the fact that often people are invited to be on a given team solely because of political reasons, not because they are meant to contribute in a specific way and what we found is that many organizations ended up with large teams of people whose roles are unclear. Setting up virtual teams can be a challenging process, especially for team members who have never participated in a virtual team before. Focusing on a number of core elements as discussed below, should help a virtual team leader to more quickly get a virtual team up and running. 1. Choose an experienced leader The leader of a virtual team has a large impact on the set up and success of a virtual team. Virtual teams tend to rely more heavily on a virtual team leader as they have less direct interaction between team members. Often communication flow in a virtual team is between members and the leader, rather than between members themselves (which is more typical of co-located teams). As such, a virtual team leader needs to be someone who is comfortable managing people remotely, who can use the technology to effectively provide task instructions and build relationships in the absence of face to face interaction. As there is much to learn for first time virtual team leaders, we suggest that a leader has at least had previous leadership experience so that they can then concentrate on the differences a virtual team has. Using a sample of 60 global, virtual supply teams from a large multi-national organization, we propose that even for new team configurations, transactive memory systems and preparation activities are critical for effectiveness. We also examined the association between members' percentage of time allocated to a team, team virtuality, and interdependence on preparation activities. Our findings suggest that preparation activities related significantly to effectiveness as mediated by transactive memory systems. Furthermore, interdependence interacted with members' percentage of time allocated to the team as related to preparation activities. Specifically, members' percentage of time allocated to the team shifted from being a positive influence on preparation activities to a negative influence as team interdependence went from relatively high to relatively low levels. How effective are these virtual teams in comparison to traditional face-to-face groups? Is the teamwork quality similar and is information exchanged as effectively? The objective of this research is to investigate these issues by developing a research model that combines the task-technology fit and teamwork quality concepts and by using a laboratory experiment to examine the effect of task complexity, media characteristics, and teamwork quality on service innovation performance and satisfaction.
