[img] PDF MPRA_paper_27374.pdf Download (430Kb) | Preview Abstract In today's dynamic marketplace, companies are under strong pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with their competitors. Besides, every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to this pressing need there should be some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product development architecture under a virtual-team umbrella. The paper describes all the major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual team, Stage-Gate system and finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system. It also provides the guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual team in new products development. Zayandehroodi ABSTRACT Reducing time and efficient project execution is an objective in many industries and project management is one of the important keys for lead the company to this allegation. The project manager needs some tools for lead the firm to the success. Collaboration is one way to success and collaboration has many types, one kind is electronic collaboration. On the other hand, small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) are a part of manufacturing industries. Combining a literature review with our empirical experience we found that relationship between the project manager and related departments for production is essential for reducing time and cost in new product development. In this study, we describe about some definition of project management, E-collaboration, SMEs and new product and review some articles around this area. Building and maintaining trust in the traditional, physical workplace is difficult enough, but the process is even tougher in a virtual environment, where people often have to work with people they haven't met in person. Some biologists believe that we are hardwired to distrust everyone except our own family members. Studies have shown, however, that trust can indeed be actively accelerated and maintained on virtual teams even when they have to be assembled on the fly with employees scattered across the globe. According to our research, the following best practices will help: Leverage "swift trust." Recognize that when groups first form, people are usually willing to give others the benefit of the doubt. The prevailing feeling is that "we're in the same boat together": success will reflect well on everyone, whereas failure could hurt people's careers. So people initially operate in a positive atmosphere of "swift trust." (This is what colloquially we might call the "honeymoon period" of a relationship). This is particularly true if the group is under pressure to perform so that, in effect, people have little choice but to trust each other. This is easily seen on a movie set, where actors, stuntmen, the director, makeup artists, set designers, the camera crew, and others collaborate intensely from day one even though they might have been strangers before. There are two ways to assure you take best advantage of the benefits of swift trust. Managers should 1) tout the competence of the different team members and 2) ensure that the team has clear goals that everyone understands. Over ti

Global and localized virtual R&D teams are believed to have high potential for the growth of SMEs. Due to the fast-growing complexity of new products coupled with new emerging opportunities of virtual teams, a collaborative approach is believed to be the future trend. This research explores the effectiveness of virtuality in SMEs' virtual R&D teams. Online questionnaires were emailed to Malaysian manufacturing SMEs and 74 usable questionnaires were received, representing a 20.8 percent return rate. In order to avoid biases which may result from pre-suggested answers, a series of open-ended questions were retrieved from the experts. This study was focused on analyzing an open-ended question, whereby four main themes were extracted from the experts' recommendations regarding the effectiveness of virtual teams for the growth and performance of SMEs. The findings of this study would be useful to product design managers of SMEs in order to realize the key advantages and significance of virtual R&D teams during the new product development (NPD) process. "AsiaSim 2012 Communications in Computer and Information Science 2012, pp 230-239 Exploring a P2P Based Collaborative Feature Modeling through a Procedural 3D CAD Language Jiacai Wang, Ichiro Hagiwara Look Inside Get Access Abstract Real time collaborative feature-based CAD modeling within geographically dispersed participants is one of the current research hot spots in collaborative design community. Most existing collaborative design prototypes are based on C/S network architecture which has some weaknesses, such as a single point of failure and bottleneck, low expansibility and higher maintenance costs. This paper proposed a more effective and efficient scheme of real time collaborative parametric feature-based CAD modeling through concurrently programming 3D CAD model macro file with a procedural 3D CAD scripting language within a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based collaborative editing system of our PRC platform, developed on the top of an improved JXTA. This paper describes the hybrid P2P network infrastructure, the procedural 3D CAD language, and a hierarchical, dynamic locking approach for consistent maintenance in P2P based collaborative editing. Po trzecie, niezwykle wysoka globalna konkurencyjność wymaga szybkich działań biznesowych i skrócenia czasu dotarcia produktu na rynek. Nowe wyzwania kreują potrzebę nowych rozwiązań w sferze badań i rozwoju, technologii produkcji, organizacji oraz nowoczesnych metod pracy i logistyki. Jest to niezwykłe zadanie biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że ściśle współpracujące ze sobą działy są często odległe od siebie o tysiące kilometrów i kilka stref czasowych.
