Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are considered as an engine for economic growth all over the world and especially for developing countries. During the past decade, new product development (NPD) has increasingly been recognized as a critical factor in ensuring the continued survival of SMEs. On the other hand, the rapid rate of market and technological changes has accelerated in the past decade, so this turbulent environment requires new methods and techniques to bring successful new products to the marketplace. Virtual team can be a solution to answer the requested demand. However, literature have shown no significant differences between traditional NPD and virtual NPD in general, whereas NPD in SME's virtual team has not been systematically investigated in developing countries. This paper aims to bridge this gap by first reviewing the NPD and its relationship with virtuality and then identifies the critical factors of NPD in virtual teams. Design/methodology/approach - Through the content analysis of 12 research papers reasons of enterprise systems adoption have been identified. With the resultant framework of variables, 288 Indian cases have been scanned to identify and contrast adoption reasons in India with other countries. Also through χ2 test their associations have been studied with respect to industry and size among Indian organizations. Findings - All the adoption reasons are present in Indian organizations. All the adoption reasons are indifferent to the industry of organization. Similarly it is found that all the adoption reasons but one is indifferent to the size of organization. Only organizational change is found to be significantly related with the size. Research limitations/implications - The scope of study is limited to the Indian organizations that have implemented enterprise systems software. All the manifest variables have been marked with only two values 0 for absence and 1 for presence while omitting the information on relative strength. There is potential possibility of bias toward ES implementation benefits and relative comfort in implementing the target vendor's product. "Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics and Effectiveness Martha L. Maznevski (martha@virginia.edu) and Katherine M. Chudoba (kchudoba@cob.fsu.edu) + Author Affiliations McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903-2493 College of Business, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32306-1110 Abstract Global virtual teams are internationally distributed groups of people with an organizational mandate to make or implement decisions with international components and implications. They are typically assigned tasks that are strategically important and highly complex. They rarely meet in person, conducting almost all of their interaction and decision making using communications technology. Although they play an increasingly important role in multinational organizations, little systematic is known about their dynamics or effectiveness. This study built a grounded theory of global virtual team processes and performance over time. We built a template based on Adaptive Structuration Theory (DeSanctis and Poole 1994) to guide our research, and we conducted a case study, observing three global virtual teams over a period of 21 months. Data were gathered using multiple methods, and qualitative methods were used to analyze them and generate a theory of global virtual team dynamics and effectiveness. First, we propose that effective global virtual team interaction comprises a series of communication incidents, each configured by aspects of the team's structural and process elements. Effective outcomes were associated with a fit among an interaction incident's form, decision process, and complexity. Second, effective global virtual teams sequence these incidents to generate a deep rhythm of regular face-to-face incidents interspersed with less intensive, shorter incidents using various media. These two insights are discussed with respect to other literature and are elaborated upon in several proposit

"Virtual Teams: Selection and Assessment of Team Members Stephen M. Urquhart Webster University Abstract This paper reviews current literature spanning theoretical and practical research of virtual teams. Ultimately, the paper will identify the most likely predictors of success to aid in the selection and assignment of employees and other members to a virtual team. Four key areas of research are covered: the virtual team environment; critical success factors in a virtual team; individual behaviors and success factors; and current practices for vetting and assigning virtual team members. Finally, a research approach is proposed to build on the currently defined success factors, measured in the context of how they would be applied in a virtual team setting. Introduction "Ever-greater virtualization is eating away at organizational structures and replacing them with networks of free agents." - Michael Malone, The Virtual Corporation (Ante, 2009) The concept of virtual teams has existed for more than two decades (Terrie, 1987; Kirkman, Rosen, Gibson, Tesluk and McPherson, 1995; Coyle and Schnaar, 1995), however, the technology to fully optimize the benefits of a team with members in different parts of the world in support of a common set of goals is relatively new and appears to be evolving. It is conceivable that the pace of technology has in some ways outstripped the capability of workers to keep up and adapt in a way where they can make a proactive and substantive contribution to organizational goals. Based on initial research into this area of concern, there appears to be insufficient guidance available to human resource (HR) practitioners and business managers in determining which employees are a good fit for a virtual team, what predictors can be used to accurately determine suitability, and how to effectively evaluate candidates for virtual assignments in advance to avoid failures and degraded productivity. This paper will evaluate the current lite

Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Totally, 20 interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed. Validity and reliability were achieved by first assessing the plausibility in terms of already existing knowledge on some of the virtual project team issues identified by participants. Findings: The findings from this study confirmed the growing relevance of virtual project teams in highly competitive global business environments. It emerged that some of the challenges identified in the study had some level of congruence with those previously identified from similar studies from other geographical locations. The findings also suggested that challenges in virtual project teams can be linked to the organisation, the project team and the virtual environment or even a combination of all. Practical implications: The present study corroborates the position that managing virtual project teams requires additional efforts to attain their objectives through effective communications and the adoption of appropriate technology. Originality/value: The originality of this study lies in its exploration of virtual project team challenges in a sub-Saharan Africa country (Nigeria). By identifying the challenges associated with virtual project teams, stakeholders will be better able to successfully establish and manage virtual project teams better. © 2

"Managing the virtual world By Golnaz Sadri and John Condia Executive Summary The skyrocketing availability of communication tools has given enterprises the ability to establish project teams that not only include office compatriots, but colleagues from other countries and continents. Some say management is management, but those who pick team leaders and members face additional challenges when managing their far-flung charges. Jon Katzenback and Douglas Smith in Harvard Business Review define a work team as a group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common mission, set of performance goals and task approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. Virtual teams possess these same qualities with the added ability to employ geographically dispersed people who use technology and communication to accomplish their work across time and space, according to Michelle LaBrosse in Employment Relations Today. The use of virtual teams is growing. A 2010 survey of employees at 600 multinational corporations conducted by RW3 CultureWizard found that 80 percent of respondents belonged to a virtual team. Those who manage virtual teams have challenges that sometimes differ from those who handle face-to-face teams. The following recommendations can help those involved in virtual team member selection, leadership and process, thereby maximizing their effectiveness. Though different in some ways, virtual teams have many characteristics in common with successful co-located teams. Blaise Bergiel, Erich Bergiel and Phillip Balsmeier in Management Research News describe the keys to success for both face-to-face and virtual teams as: high levels of trust, open and clear communication, strong leadership, clear goals and purpose and the use of appropriate levels of technology. Differences include the fact that virtual teams are able to span across spatial distance and multiple time zones. Team members can be as close as one floor away or as far apart a

Virtual R&D Teams Definition, By: Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim - 0 views

  •   Virtual R&D Teams Definition Nader Ale Ebrahim  The literature related to virtual R&D teams reveals a lack of depth in the definitions(AleEbrahim et al., 2010). Although virtual teamwork is a current topic in the literatureconcerning global organizations, it is problematic to define the meaning of 'virtual teams'across multiple institutional contexts (Chudoba et al., 2005). The concept of a "team" isdescribed as a small number of people with complementary skills who are equally committedto a common purpose, goal, and working approach for which they hold themselves mutuallyaccountable (Zenun et al., 2007). It is worth mentioning that virtual teams (VTs) are oftenformed to overcome geographical or temporal separations (Cascio and Shurygailo, 2003).VTs work across boundaries of time and space using modern computer-driven technologies(Ebrahim et al., 2010). The term "VTs" is used to cover a wide range of activities and forms of technology-supported working (Anderson et al., 2007). Gassmann and Von Zedtwitz(2003) defined "virtual team as a group of people and sub-teams who interact throughinterdependent tasks guided by common purpose and work across links strengthened byinformation, communication, and transport technologies". Another definition suggests thatvirtual teams, are distributed work teams whose members are geographically dispersed andcoordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communicationtechnologies (e-mail, video conferencing, telephone, etc.) (Hertel et al., 2005). From the perspective of Leenders et al. (2003), VTs are groups of individuals collaborating in theexecution of a specific project while geographically and often temporally distributed, possibly anywhere within (and beyond) their parent organization. Among the differentdefinitions for virtual teams the following form is one of the most widely accepted definition:''VTs as groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers broughttogether by information technologies to accomplish one or more organization tasks''(Powellet al., 2004).Therefore, a comprehensive definition of virtual teams may be taken as:  small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed knowledge workers whocoordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communicationtechnologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks (Ale Ebrahim et al.,2009). Nowadays, this definition have gained popularity as found in Wikipedia(wikipedia,2011). Virtual R&D team is a kind of virtual team that concentrate on the R&D tasks andleft:522px;to

Yael Zofi | A Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams Virtual work arrangements are on the rise as traditional work situations are giving way to more flexible ones. The concept of an office in a fixed location that you have to go to is becoming less universal. As executives engage in stringent cost cutting, office space and their attendant expenses shrink, and fewer employees spend their workday at adjoining workstations. Today, knowledge workers can be productive anywhere, thanks to mobile devices, faster network access and online collaboration tools available in coffee houses, inside homes and on city streets. While organizations have long established operations in multiple locations, colleagues are increasingly asked to collaborate across time zones and continents, with shared responsibility for outcomes. In my consulting practice I have seen large conglomerates organize projects around teams that reside in different countries, fully expecting that they will get deliverables out the door quickly within budgetary and time constraints. These teams follow the sun, handing off work products to each other. This is all made possible by technology, the great enabler that helps us create efficiencies and fosters quick decision-making. But what about the human connection? Although team members do not share the same location, they must still work collaboratively to meet common goals. What keeps these individuals organized, communicative, and productive without ongoing face-to-face interactions? And how will organizations ensure the human connection that fue

Applied Technology and Performance Improvement (ATPI) Program, University of North Texas, United States View references (38) Abstract With the increasing complex business environment that organizations have to operate in today, teams are being utilized to complete complex tasks. Teams are capable of completing complex tasks that no one individual can achieve. Effective team decision-making requires team members to discuss new information (unshared knowledge) and to consider this new information along with existing information (shared knowledge). Research has shown that shared knowledge is favored over unshared knowledge during team discussions. One method of transferring unshared knowledge to shared knowledge is to take advantage of new multiagent systems that are designed to support teams. Multiagent systems are capable of filtering information without the bias toward shared information over unshared information. This paper takes a theoretical approach supporting the use of multiagent systems as a means to increase the effectiveness of team decision-making processes by better capturing shared and unshared information. © Common Ground, John R. The study focused on the influence of virtual research and development (R&D) teams within Malaysian manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The specific objective of the study is better understanding of the application of collaborative technologies in business, to find the effective factors to assist SMEs to remain competitive in the future. The paper stresses to find an answer for a question "Is there any relationship between company size, Internet connection facility and virtuality?". The survey data shows SMEs are now technologically capable of performing the virtual collaborative team, but the infrastructure usage is less. SMEs now have the necessary technology to begin the implementation process of collaboration tools to reduce research and development (R&D) time, costs and increase productivity. So, the manager of R&D should take the potentials of virtual teams into account. In the competitive environment it is necessary for the enterprises to put together different capabilities and services with the goal. It is widely accepted that innovation can be better achieved by working in team particularly in the virtual environments. The employed web services technology, although very popular nowadays but it is still not mature enough, so dealing with it can bring new findings. Virtual teams base on information technology are formed to facilitate transnational innovation processes and it should be noted that innovation has a positive impact on corporate performance if it is well guided. This has the pronounced effect when it comes to the learning issues as the virtual preconditions persist. In this environment the possibility of getting closer to the interest of learner from the new environment raise as the barriers being imposed by the service provider is reduced and the freedom of what is require to learn is improved. Information and communication technology has brought about significant changes in organizations and produced important benefits, including in the areas of innovation which is recognized as a prime source of national competitive advantage. This contribution proposes a conceptual model for understanding and analyzing the process of virtual R&D team as an innovation and technology assimilation facilitator when it comes to the issue of conveying innovative message for learning by individuals. For decades, "the office" has been as central to the white-collar economy as factories are to industry. But today's Internet communication technologies enable employees to communicate effortlessly across space and in real time, while project-management software allows their bosses to coordinate and monitor that work remotely. This technological shift has only been accelerated by the economic recession, as internal restructuring aimed at cutting costs, and the Darwinian survival of companies with the lowest overhead, have replaced physical workplaces with distributed workforces. As brick-and-mortar buildings and square-feet of physical space are increasingly seen as inefficiencies from an earlier age, there's a question all businesses should be asking: are we eliminating certain kinds of employee interaction that, directly or otherwise, contribute to productivity? Or put another way, are human connections important to corporate health? In a study commissioned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of BBC's breakout comedy "The Office," Virgin Media Business recently surveyed 1000 U.K. Workers. When asked whether the offices of today will exist in ten years, 50 percent of respondents responded in the negative. Giving credence to this point of view is an MIT study on the rise of the virtual office, which forecasts increased adoption despite privacy and security issues associated with technology. Rather pointedly, though, the study concludes that "snazzy digital tools" are no substitute for able employees, and that "the office of the future might have fewer people in it, but the ones who are there will matter more than ever." Who can argue with the appeal of interactive media tools that offer convenience, speed and efficiency? Does anybody think there are real gains to be had by returning to electric

"SMEs; Virtual research and development (R&D) teams and new product development: A literature review Ale Ebrahim, Nader; Ahmed, Shamsuddin and Taha, Zahari (2010): SMEs; Virtual research and development (R&D) teams and new product development: A literature review. Published in: International Journal of the Physical Sciences , Vol. 5, No. 7 (July 2010): pp. 916-930. [img] PDF - Requires a PDF viewer such as GSview, Xpdf or Adobe Acrobat Reader 387Kb Abstract Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are indeed the engines of global economic growth. Their continued growth is a major subject for the economy and employment of any country. Towards that end, virtual research and development (R&D) could be a viable option to sustain and ease the operations of SMEs. However, literature shows there has not been a great deal of research into the diverse characteristic of virtual R&D teams in SMEs. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R&D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the literature review is to provide an outline on the structure and dynamics of R&D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the rationale and relevance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R&D team for SMEs and new product development (NPD) has been examined. It concludes with identifying the gaps and feebleness in the existing literature and calls for future research in this area. It is argued to form of virtual R&D team deserves consideration at top level management for venturing into the new product development within SMEs. Munchen, Germany Abstract Open innovation research shows that idea competitions are a promising approach for integrating customers and that most innovations are a result of intensive collaboration (Franke and Shah, 2003; Gasco-Hernandez and Torres-Coronas, 2004; Nemiro, 2001; Sawhney et al., 2005). Thus, fostering collaboration among idea contributors might be a fruitful approach for unleashing the customers' entire creative potential and making idea competitions even more successful. This paper reports on a field study in which idea contributors could collaborate in an IT-based idea competition using the wiki technology. We tested whether user collaboration positively influences the quality of the submissions applying an in-depth analysis of idea quality. Our results show that user collaboration enhances idea quality and that inducing user collaboration is a viable design element for making idea competitions more effective. This contributes to a more successful design, implementation and operation of idea competitions, as well as to better outcomes. The article concludes with a discussion of customer groups collaborating in idea competitions (extrinsically and intrinsically motivated customers).
