"Production Planning & Control Supplier involvement in integrated product development: evidence from a group of Italian SMEs Supplier involvement in integrated product development: evidence from a group of Italian SMEs Preview Buy now DOI: 10.1080/09537287.2011.647870 Patrizia Garengoa* & Roberto Panizzoloa Available online: 16 Jan 2012 Alert me * TOC email alert * TOC RSS feed * Citation email alert * Citation RSS feed Abstract Integrated product development (IPD) is gaining increased attention from practitioners and the academic community as a source of innovation and competitive advantage. However undeniable the importance of the issue is as to how the different actors involved in the process interact among themselves and the supporting factors not being well understood even in the SME context, the availability of empirical research and a comprehensive framework to drive this research remains unavailable. This article contributes to these research gaps by providing theoretical and empirical findings. First, a research framework on IPD is identified. The proposed framework represents a conceptualisation of IPD principles as consisting of three groups of integration enablers, which aim to achieve high internal (among departments) and external (with suppliers and customers) integration: (a) organisational enablers, (b) technological enablers and (c) methodologies. Then, a multiple case study approach is used in order to empirically explore external integration with suppliers in product development in 22 SMEs from the machine tool sector. * View full text * Download full text"

"Practices supporting knowledge transfer - an analysis of lean product development PreviewView full textDownload full text Full access DOI: 10.1080/0951192X.2011.651160 Ludvig Lindlöfa*, Björn Söderberga & Magnus Perssona Available online: 18 Jan 2012 Alert me Abstract Lean product development is considered by many authors to promote learning and knowledge transfer, but studies that relate lean product development to the understanding drawn from the knowledge management field seem to be lacking. This article establishes a link between the concept of lean product development and the field of knowledge management. The transfer of knowledge within any organisation is recognised as a challenging task and mastering that challenge is increasingly important. Numerous studies show that common knowledge transfer tools such as post-project reviews are problematic, which calls for improved ways of transferring knowledge. By relating Lean principles and methods to the knowledge creation framework developed by Nonaka and Takeuchi (often referred to as the SECI-model), this article suggests that lean product development offers principles and methods that could provide a way of improving knowledge transfer in product development. "Bernardo T. Source College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, A227 Veterinary Medical Center, East Lansing, Michigan 48824, USA. tbernard@cvm.msu.edu Abstract 'A war against disease requires not only financial resources, sufficient technology, and political commitment, but also a strategy, operational lines of responsibility, and the capacity to learn along the way', according to J.D. Sachs. In our interdependent world, it is increasingly apparent that health is a global public good that requires collaboration across borders and generates transnational benefits. The same holds true for the information and knowledge necessary to uphold and defend it. It is only through collaboration that we can confront the complexity presented by host interactions and movement, genetic variability and environmental factors, ranging from chemical contamination to climate change. The Internet is an unprecedented tool for communication and collaboration which we need to use to best advantage for our purposes, be it to create value by combining data from various sources, harness mass reporting modalities, such as really simple syndication (RSS) feeds and blogs for surveillance and monitoring, participate in online ideas markets to spur research, use wikis to develop and share educational resources, or assemble virtual teams of experts as required. These are the skills for the 21st century which will facilitate disease prevention, early detection and rapid response to help protect human lives and livelihoods and to reduce the mass destruction of animals."

Transforming the effectiveness of virtual teams - Virtualization World 365 - 0 views

"Transforming the effectiveness of virtual teams Mobile and online collaborative tools have enabled the creation of virtual teams - but the ad hoc adoption of this form of working, with few companies creating clear management or technology adoption strategies, is leading to problems. With one in three individuals claiming that virtual teams are poorly managed, organisations need to consider the implications of virtual working and recognise that effective collaboration requires more than email and video conferencing. As Chris de Silva, managing director of NEC IT Solutions, explains, to exploit the value of virtual working, tap into global expertise and ensure consistent productivity, organisations must put in place robust management practices that are supported by tailored collaborative and communications technologies. Managing Virtual Teams: Five Keys to Success | Seventhman - 0 views

  • In my recent article "Effective Virtual Teams for New Product Development,Scientific Research and Essay, 7(21), 1971-1985, June 2012", I conclude that "Technology and Process are tightly correlated and need to be considered early in virtual teams. It is found that the role of Knowledge Workers in virtual teams is significant". So, Virtual team tools would not be the first priority of the virtual teams management.
  •  Thanks Nader for sharing your insights - yes, tools and technologies to manage virtual teams are just a fraction of that contributing factor to success; people skills are important as well. A Like Reply

Knowledge Virtualization and Local Connectedness among Smart High-tech Companies - 0 views

"Knowledge Virtualization and Local Connectedness among Smart High-tech Companies Contents: Author info Abstract Bibliographic info Download info Related research References Citations Lists Statistics Corrections Author Info Marina van Geenhuizen (m.s.vangeenhuizen@tudelft.nl) (Delft University of Technology, Delft) Peter Nijkamp (p.nijkamp@vu.nl) (VU University Amsterdam) Registered author(s): Peter Nijkamp Abstract Smart high-tech companies are characterized by knowledge intensity and open innovation. Even when these companies emerge in spatial clusters or dense urban places, they may utilize knowledge networks on a global scale. However, there is not much insight into the factors that shape knowledge networks, the role of virtualization herein and the impact of on global knowledge sourcing on local connectedness. This paper seeks to fill these gaps in understanding, by drawing on a selected sample of young high-technology companies in the Netherlands and application of rough set analysis to identify homogeneous categories of companies in the highly differentiated segment of young high-tech companies. The outcomes suggest that employing mainly local and employing mainly global knowledge networks coexist in city-regions, and that only part of the globalized companies are losing local connectedness, particularly those involved in co-creation with global customers and those acting as learning partners of multinational corporations ('reverse' knowledge transfer). Factors counteracting a weakening of local connectedness are specific local knowledge relationships and the strategy of developing local/regional customer markets. "Thank you for sharing virtual team tools list. I do believe "Virtual teams will become as important as Web to companies" in near future. We have done a survey study and published a series of papers on "Virtual teams" and " virtual R&D teams" which is available on http://ssrn.com/author=1379350 . All in all, we define a new definition for "virtual team" (virtual team "is small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/ or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks"[1]) and found the advantages of employing virtual teams is far from conventional teams. How to Build Trust Among a Virtual Team | Northwest Staffing Firms | Provisional Blog - 0 views

  •
"Building Trust Among Your Virtual Team Members November 1st, 2011 From 2000 through 2009, the number of employees that worked remotely tripled in size - and that number is expected to continue to grow rapidly. In addition, in 2011, 10% of workers reported telecommuting at least once a week, up from 8% in 2007. But despite this increase, the challenge remains: How can supervisors properly manage virtual workers to deliver positive results? The answer is simpler - and more complicated - than you might think. It's all about trust. As one of the Northwest's top staffing firms, we know that virtual teams aren't unlike on-site teams in that trust is a key component of success and productivity. Many workplace experts agree that trust is perhaps the most important element of a harmonious and efficient work environment - and that attitude holds true for employees working remotely, as well. In fact, in the book, Virtual Team Success, authors Darleen DeRosa and Richard Lepsinger shared findings from a global study, which concluded that top performing virtual teams reported higher levels of trust than teams that were less successful. According to the authors, trust is an essential ingredient for virtual team success. While it might only take seconds to destroy, building trust can take a while, especially in a virtual environment, where there isn't nearly as much personal interaction. But it's definitely possible and will ultimately contribute to the team's overall success. To help you get started, here are some tips to keep in mind. Establish clear and open communication from the beginning. Make sure that all team members have each others' contact information and preferred means of contact. Set the ground rules. This is critically important before the start of the project so that everyone is clear on expectations. For instance, let each member know you expect a progress report via email by the end of the day Friday. Use online tools, li

"Production time and cost will be reduced by at least 25% You suddenly have listable, printable documentation on everything that that was done during the project - everything! Users can be enabled to see an overview of each page, each project, or your whole operation. You can verify corrections against notes with pixel-by-pixel marking of differences between the last two versions. WebProof's highlight-copy-edit tool for text - which is easy and fast, and the only one on the market. An internal view for you and separate external view for clients. More accomplishment per day vs. 2 hours of searching and managing e-mails (as research has shown some workers do). Easy, justifiable invoicing - everything was documented along the way. Flexibility to work anytime, with full functionality, from anywhere with Internet service. Flexibility to allocate work to anyone, anywhere with Internet service. Ability to hide pages (like annual report figures) from prying eyes - a must for public companies. Your client will love that they can monitor their project from the second you start working! "
