" Cross Functional (Global) Team Building Is your organization challenged with building a global team for a critical project? Are you seeking to align cross-functional teams in a time-challenged M&A or restructuring environment? If you're faced with one or both of these scenarios, you know the challenges of designing and implementing enterprise-level global initiatives in today's economic downturn. And, more recently, global events such as the unrest in the Middle East have added to the hurdles senior HR executives must overcome in managing global teams. Now more than ever, cross-functional global projects in business and technology are especially in need of a nuanced and custom-tailored approach, as managing cross-functional and multicultural teams in disparate locations presents unique business and social challenges. Cross-Functional & Multicultural Teams A cross-functional team is a group of employees from different functions within an organization-such as human resources, information technology, marketing and finance-who are all focusing on a specific objective and have the responsibility to work as a team to achieve shared goals. Multicultural teams, on the other hand, are made up of people from different social and professional cultures, who work together toward a common goal. Managing cross-functional teams is a complex endeavor by itself, but it becomes even more challenging when the multicultural component is added to the mix. In fact, in today's global and knowledge-oriented environment, the alignment of human resources is just as important as raw materials, production and marketing, as a team that cannot work together will not produce much in terms of results. What complicates the situation is that in today's dynamic and volatile business environment, senior HR executives require a keen understanding of relevant factors impacting the formation and utilization of global teams. However, with cooperative, involved management from senior HR ex

Virtual teams are growing in popularity [1] and many organizations have responded to their dynamic environments by introducing virtual teams. Additionally, the rapid development of new communication technologies such as the Internet has accelerated this trend so that today, most of the larger organization employs virtual teams to some degree [2]. A growing number of flexible and adaptable organizations have explored the virtual environment as one means of achieving increased responsiveness [3]. Howells et al. [4] state that the shift from serial to simultaneous and parallel working has become more commonplace. Based on conventional information technologies and Internet-based platforms virtual environments may be used to sustain companies' progress through virtual interaction and communication. 1 : University of Malaya (UM) Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya 2 : Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering and Management Technology, University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Education Domaine : Sciences de l'Homme et Société/Gestion et management Mots Clés : Virtual R&D teams - Virtual Team - Management Challenge - Collaboration - ICT application Liste des fichiers attachés à ce document : PDF Academic_Leadership_Journal_-.Management_Challengespdf.pdf(445.8 KB) hal-00690027, version 1 http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00690027 oai:hal.archives-ouvertes.fr:hal-00690027 Contributeur : Nader Ale Ebrahim Soumis le : Vendredi 20 Avril 2012, 21:45:32 Dernière modification le : Mardi 24 Avril 2012, 11:01:48"

"Virtual Collaborative R&D Teams in Malaysia Manufacturing SMEs Nader Ale Ebrahim, Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya Shamsuddin Ahmed Salwa Hanim Abdul Rashid Zahari Taha M. A. Wazed Abstract This paper presents the results of empirical research conducted during March to September 2009. The study focused on the influence of virtual research and development (R&D) teams within Malaysian manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The specific objective of the study is better understanding of the application of collaborative technologies in business, to find the effective factors to assist SMEs to remain competitive in the future. The paper stresses to find an answer for a question "Is there any relationship between company size, Internet connection facility and virtuality?". The survey data shows SMEs are now technologically capable of performing the virtual collaborative team, but the infrastructure usage is less. SMEs now have the necessary technology to begin the implementation process of collaboration tools to reduce research and development (R&D) time, costs and increase productivity. So, the manager of R&D should take the potentials of virtual teams into account. Suggested Citation ALE EBRAHIM, N., AHMED, S., ABDUL RASHID, S. H., TAHA, Z. & WAZED, M. A. 2012. Enterprises tend to rely on their foreign partners for supporting technology and knowledge acquisition to conduct and improve firms' product development with low R&D risk. R&D is a highly creative and knowledge-intensive activity, Therefore, efficient knowledge flow, which transmits the right knowledge to the right people at the right time, is key to improving efficiency of the R&D process. Kanban supports visual production control using the card of providing information to regulate the flow of inventory and materials. To enhance the knowledge flow efficiency in the virtual R&D process, this study proposes a knowledge kanban system utilizing the philosophy of kanban management and knowledge engineering techniques. Employees can quickly, easily, and exactly determine what knowledge they need to learn, create, share, and maintain by the knowledge kanban system. This system assists employees to do the right thing, to reduce the cycle time of R&D processes, and to enhance the reuse of knowledge, to create new knowledge. To achieve this objective, this study first proposes a knowledge flow model in virtual R&D based on the analysis res

Organizacje pierwszej dekady XXI wieku działające w niezwykle dynamicznym, zmiennym i złożonym środowisku stają obecnie przed szeregiem ważnych wyzwań.

Munchen, Germany Abstract Open innovation research shows that idea competitions are a promising approach for integrating customers and that most innovations are a result of intensive collaboration (Franke and Shah, 2003; Gasco-Hernandez and Torres-Coronas, 2004; Nemiro, 2001; Sawhney et al., 2005). Thus, fostering collaboration among idea contributors might be a fruitful approach for unleashing the customers' entire creative potential and making idea competitions even more successful. This paper reports on a field study in which idea contributors could collaborate in an IT-based idea competition using the wiki technology. We tested whether user collaboration positively influences the quality of the submissions applying an in-depth analysis of idea quality. Our results show that user collaboration enhances idea quality and that inducing user collaboration is a viable design element for making idea competitions more effective. This contributes to a more successful design, implementation and operation of idea competitions, as well as to better outcomes. The article concludes with a discussion of customer groups collaborating in idea competitions (extrinsically and intrinsically motivated customers). Keywords idea competitions, collaboration, open innovation, crowdsourcing, toolkits, software development, user innovation, new product development, R&, D, research and development, creative potential, creativity, wiki technology, idea quali

"Virtual teams definition edit delete Thursday, April 14, 2011 Virtual teams Developments in communications technologies have seen the emergence of the virtual work team. A virtual team is a group of people who work interdependently and with shared purpose across space, time, and organisation boundaries using technology to communicate and collaborate. Virtual team members can be located across a country or across the world, rarely meet face-to-face, and include members from different cultures.[1] Ale Ebrahim, N., Ahmed, S. & Taha, Z. in their recent (2009) literature review paper, added two key issues to definition of a virtual team "as small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/ or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks".[2] Many virtual teams are cross-functional and emphasis solving customer problems or generating new work processes. The United States Labour Department reported that in 2001, 19 million people worked from home online or from another location, and that by the end of 2002, over 100 million people world-wide would be working outside traditional offices.[3] 1. The 8 best collaboration tools for virtual teams | Time Doctor - Time Management Software - 0 views

"Productivity, Remote Teams At Time Doctor, we work with staff members in more than nine different countries - as you can imagine, team collaboration has a range of unique challenges. There are a number of tools that we use in our company, most of them are free. ((With over 10 years of experience under our belts, we've tried the best and worst of many collaborative tools - we thought it would be valuable to share the tools we we use and what exactly we use them for; Google Docs Google docs - provides free online spreadsheets and document management with a Gmail/Google Account. The spreadsheet feature is particularly useful when you need to have multiple people working on the same spreadsheet at the same time (something you can't do with Dropbox). It doesn't have all of the features of Excel, but it's very useful for collaborative editing of documents (including text files). You can use Google Docs effectively as a company "wiki" where anyone in the company is able to add any information to the document. How we use Google Docs: Domain management, financial reports, feature suggestion lists, payroll coverage, performance appraisals, ranking reports, login information, directory lists and online resources. Jing Project Jing Project - This is a fantastic free collaboration tool (although you need to pay for some features). It allows you to take a screen or video capture of anything on your desktop. Screen captures can be easily annotated, and you can record your voice along with any video to easily explain something. You can upload the capture to Screencast.com and they'll turn it into a simple link where anyone can view the capture. This is perfect for communicating with designers for example when you wish to write comments and explain to a designer what needs to be changed. Here is an example: http://screencast.com/t/GuTz0hjDteI How we use Jing: communicating with designers and developers, creating training and instructional vide

Virtual R&D team: Technology Transfer Facilitator-Zhilai Digital Library - 0 views

  • A conceptual model is proposed which facilitate the process of technology transfer by applying a virtual R&D team. The underlying hypothesis is responded to competitive challenges, the complex customer requirements and the high instability on the market. The context of the knowledge-based economy introduces a major shift from serial to simultaneous R&D activities in the way technology transfer is conceived. The traditional model of R&D team work is relies on the visual and face-to-face teams. The complexities involved in organizing face-to-face interactions among team members from one side, and the rapid developments of electronic communication technologies from the other, caused firms to turn towards employing virtual R&D teams. The paper postulates that in the new perspective, virtual R&D team to be considered as a specific technology transfer means. It depends on the ways firms and other institutions are managing them, in particular the co-evolution of their absorptive capabilities and their technology conveying strategies. To support the theoretical analysis, this paper provides a comprehensive review based on authentic and reputed publications.

Co-sourcing is a highly integrative and cohesive approach, seen successful, to software development offshoring. However, research of how co-sourcing shapes the perception and alleviation of common offshoring risks is limited. We present a case study of how a certified CMMI-level 5 Danish software supplier approaches these risks in offshore co-sourcing. The paper explains how common offshoring risks are perceived and alleviated when adopting the co-sourcing strategy in a mature (CMMI level 5) software development organization. We found that most of the common offshoring risks were perceived and alleviated in accordance with previous research, with the exception of the task distribution risk area. In this case, high task uncertainty, equivo

To test our proposed model, we surveyed 224 buyers of TaoBao, a major Chinese C2C portal. The results indicate that PEEIM has no effect on the relationship between trust in platform and trust in seller, ye t it positively moderates the relationship between trust in seller and purchase intention. In addition, PWQS positively moderates the relationship between trust in platform and trust in seller, but negatively moderates the relationship between trust in sel ler and purchase intention. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Keywords: Trust, Platform, Seller, Purchase intention, E - commerce institutional mechanisms, Website quality. "
