Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics and Effectiveness - 0 views

"Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics and Effectiveness Martha L. Maznevski (martha@virginia.edu) and Katherine M. Chudoba (kchudoba@cob.fsu.edu) + Author Affiliations McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903-2493 College of Business, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32306-1110 Abstract Global virtual teams are internationally distributed groups of people with an organizational mandate to make or implement decisions with international components and implications. They are typically assigned tasks that are strategically important and highly complex. They rarely meet in person, conducting almost all of their interaction and decision making using communications technology. Although they play an increasingly important role in multinational organizations, little systematic is known about their dynamics or effectiveness. This study built a grounded theory of global virtual team processes and performance over time. We built a template based on Adaptive Structuration Theory (DeSanctis and Poole 1994) to guide our research, and we conducted a case study, observing three global virtual teams over a period of 21 months. Data were gathered using multiple methods, and qualitative methods were used to analyze them and generate a theory of global virtual team dynamics and effectiveness. First, we propose that effective global virtual team interaction comprises a series of communication incidents, each configured by aspects of the team's structural and process elements. Effective outcomes were associated with a fit among an interaction incident's form, decision process, and complexity. Second, effective global virtual teams sequence these incidents to generate a deep rhythm of regular face-to-face incidents interspersed with less intensive, shorter incidents using various media. These two insights are discussed with respect to other literature and are elaborated upon in several proposit

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Publication type: Doctoral thesis Series/Report no.: Doctoral Dissertation Keywords: Design processmeta designonline supportparticipatory designpublicuser involvementweb-based health supportyoung carer Abstract: The studies in this dissertation have their origin in the research project PS Young Support. This project aimed to develop and evaluate a web-based support system (WBSS) for young people living close to someone with mental illness. To make this support relevant, and to achieve legitimacy and trustworthiness it was found important to cooperate with prospective users in developing it through a participatory design (PD) process. The dissertation follows two lines of investigation. One of these relates to how PD can inspire new views on design, while the other is about barriers to involvement of users. Specifically, inspiring views aims at how a PD process with prospective users as co-designers has influenced the way we think about WBSSs. Moving on from the common idea of a WBSS as a stand-alone intervention, Studies I and II show that WBSSs can be used as a tool to reach real-life support. Earlier research suggests that online support is rarely the preferred support; the present research show that young carers viewed it as a starting point for reaching real-life contacts and real- life support. Furthermore, young people with poor mental health are more prone to seek support online compared with those with less poor mental health. Hence, a WBSS could serve as a means to capture the former group and offer them online support. At the same time it could serve as a tool for reaching real-life support and external services. In this way the WBSS could offer a help path to individuals in need of support. Study IV investigates meta design, i.e. how users have really used the WBSS and the conditions for redesign. The development WBSS and its implemented version are compared with respect to their intended use (thing design) and how they really were used (use design). The context of use was found to be critical, since data collected in an experimental setting may be misleading and not reflect real use. Consequently, natural settings are recommended for user feedback. The second line of investigation in this dissertation concerns systemic barriers including barriers to user influence. It is not common in PD to focus on the designers. However, Study II and III reveal two types of barriers, both of which are connected to the designers. They are “systemic” barriers as they are a part of the setting that constitutes design. They cannot really be avoided, just handled. The first barrier has to do with the fact that users and designers do not regularly share the same social conditions, and consequently that they have different assumptions, implying that they may have difficulties to understand each other. Assumptions of shared views and the fact that understanding is a process that takes time may increase the effect of this foundational difference. Study II reports crucial differences in the views of what the WBSS should support. The second barrier concerns the impact of deadlines on designers’ attitudes to users’ contributions. Study III reports that halfway through the design process, designers reorganized their work and put more effort into the act of producing an artefact. Along with this shift, designers’ preferred type of knowledge seemed to change, from knowledge based on user experience to expert knowledge.... more ISBN: ISBN 978-91-628-8671-4 ISSN: 1101-718X URI: http://hdl.handl

"Virtual Teams for New Product Development - An Innovative Experience for R&D Engineers Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed and Zahari Taha MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany Abstract: New interaction tools such as internet allow companies to gain valuable input from research and development (R&D) engineers via virtual teams. Consequently, engineers also get more expertise in diminutive time frames. Virtual R&D teams present the key impetus to the technology acquisition process. The present knowledge-economy era is characterized by short product life-cycles. Virtual R&D teams may reduce time-to-market, make available a large pool of new product know-how and provide greater flexibilities, which are the key success factors in a competitive market. This comprehensive review contains almost 100 references and covers the recent literature with emphasis on the topic. The review has focused on authentic and reputed publications and extracts the results. This article presents the type of virtual teams and their main features and explains how virtual R&D team can play a prominent role in developing new products. The article is evolved future study guideline and also illustrates how to apply virtual interaction tools and integrate engineers into the innovation process. Management of virtual R&D teams in new product development (NPD) processes in an innovative, effective and efficient is of a high importance, but the issue has been poorly addressed in the previous studies. Findings show that virtual R&D team provides valuable input for new product development and R&D engineers are able to attain virtual experience. "Virtual R&D Teams: A New Model for Product Development Other Languages ID: 41771 Authors: Nader Ale Ebrahim Journal: International Journal of Innovation Abstract: Increased global competitions have urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop new products faster. Virtual research and development (R&D) teams in SMEs can offer a solution to speed up time-to-market of new product development (NPD). However, factors that affect the effectiveness of virtual teams for NPD are still not adequately verified. This paper presents the correlations between virtual R&D team constructs and virtual team effectiveness by developing a "Virtual Research and Development Team" (ViR&DT) model. The items, which may influence the effectiveness of virtual teams, are taken from the literature. Through an online survey and by application of structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, the proposed model (ViR&DT) has been tested. The results suggest that the process construct is strongly correlated to the effectiveness of virtual teams. Therefore, NPD managers in virtual R&D teams should concentrate on the process of new product development rather than simply equipping the teams with the latest technology or employing highly qualified experts. Further empirical research is recommended to fully explore and appreciate the breadth of application of the ViR&DT model. This paper is a part of my PhD journey. Managing from a distance - How to manage virtual teams | Deloitte SA Blog - 0 views

"Managing from a distance - How to manage virtual teams This blog post follows the Deloitte e-tolling article (written by Candice Silverstone and published on the 18th March 2011) which discussed the effect e-tolling will have on employees. I have provided an excerpt from the article below: "Given the impact that this proposed system will have on organisations and their employees, it is crucial that companies consider the implications on their Reward and Travel policies and practices, as well as changes to traditional modes of working. In order to cut travel time and associated costs, the creation of home offices, particularly by professionals and knowledge workers, is likely to become more attractive with the implementation of e-tolling. The trend of remote/off-site/virtual teams is therefore likely to increase, particularly with advances of technology. Such working arrangements may present socio-psychological challenges however, such as a decline in team spirit due to little personal contact and supervision, feelings of social isolation as a result of increased use and dependence on technology, and poor employee well-being and frustration due to possible role uncertainty". Managing from a Distance - How to manage virtual, remote and/or dispersed teams by Candice Silverstone of Deloitte Consulting As many organisations are aware, non-traditional teams are growing locally and internationally as enterprises convert to global organisational structures and invest in more complex technology. The introduction of toll roads is also likely to decrease face to face time in the hope of reducing travel costs. It is time to stop thinking of dispersed teams as special cases and start developing management strategies for dealing with the new challenges that they create so as not to risk team dysfunction and sub-optimal performance. Critical Success Factors for High Performing Dispersed Teams Extensive research, coupled with our own client experience, demonstrates

In the competitive environment companies are obliged to produce more rapidly, more effectively and more efficiently in new product development which is a result of research and development (R&D) activities. It is necessary for them to put together different capabilities and services with the goal, through cooperation between suppliers and customers, service providers and scientific institutions to achieve innovations of high quality. Depending on the type of industry, the type of business, the type of innovation and the strategic objectives that have been set, firms will regularly have to modify the way in which their R&D and innovation is organized. Nowadays shift from serial to simultaneous and parallel working in innovation has become more commonplace. Literatures have shown that collaboration is as a meta-capability for innovation. By a comprehensive reviewing of literature this article after define a virtual teams and its characteristics, addressing virtual environments innovation and the relationship to R&D activities. Finally conclude that innovation cannot be successful unless the knowledge and information in the R&D project are effectively captured, shared and internalized by the R&D project's virtual team members."

This article establishes a link between the concept of lean product development and the field of knowledge management. The transfer of knowledge within any organisation is recognised as a challenging task and mastering that challenge is increasingly important. Numerous studies show that common knowledge transfer tools such as post-project reviews are problematic, which calls for improved ways of transferring knowledge. By relating Lean principles and methods to the knowledge creation framework developed by Nonaka and Takeuchi (often referred to as the SECI-model), this article suggests that lean product development offers principles and methods that could provide a way of improving knowledge transfer in product development. Design/methodology/approach - The study employed the Johansen cointegration technique to estimate the long-run relationship between the variables, while an error correction model was used to determine the short-run dynamics of the system. Findings - Finding suggests that FDI has had a significant positive impact on Pakistan's economic growth in the long-run. For example, trade liberalization and their interactive terms have a positive effect in the short-run while a negative effect is observed in the long-run upon economic growth of Pakistan. The results indicate that due to a low quality of human capital in Pakistan; the direct effect of FDI on economic growth becomes negative. Research limitations/implications - We limited our study to a few variables, including human capital, trade openness, government size, population, consumer price index in order to manage robust data analysis. Practical / Policy Implications: We find that for FDI to be a significant contributor to economic growth in Pakistan, government must focus upon improving

Following is the original, unedited typescript of that article. If you've ever tried to drive out of a snowdrift, you know that whirling wheels create even more slippery ice. Gunning your motor looks energetic and decisive, but it's more likely to yield frustration than forward movement.
