Virtual R&D Teams Definition, By: Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim - 0 views

  •   Virtual R&D Teams Definition Nader Ale Ebrahim  The literature related to virtual R&D teams reveals a lack of depth in the definitions(AleEbrahim et al., 2010). Although virtual teamwork is a current topic in the literatureconcerning global organizations, it is problematic to define the meaning of 'virtual teams'across multiple institutional contexts (Chudoba et al., 2005). The concept of a "team" isdescribed as a small number of people with complementary skills who are equally committedto a common purpose, goal, and working approach for which they hold themselves mutuallyaccountable (Zenun et al., 2007). It is worth mentioning that virtual teams (VTs) are oftenformed to overcome geographical or temporal separations (Cascio and Shurygailo, 2003).VTs work across boundaries of time and space using modern computer-driven technologies(Ebrahim et al., 2010). The term "VTs" is used to cover a wide range of activities and forms of technology-supported working (Anderson et al., 2007). Gassmann and Von Zedtwitz(2003) defined "virtual team as a group of people and sub-teams who interact throughinterdependent tasks guided by common purpose and work across links strengthened byinformation, communication, and transport technologies". Another definition suggests thatvirtual teams, are distributed work teams whose members are geographically dispersed andcoordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communicationtechnologies (e-mail, video conferencing, telephone, etc.) (Hertel et al., 2005). From the perspective of Leenders et al. (2003), VTs are groups of individuals collaborating in theexecution of a specific project while geographically and often temporally distributed, possibly anywhere within (and beyond) their parent organization. Among the differentdefinitions for virtual teams the following form is one of the most widely accepted definition:''VTs as groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers broughttogether by information technologies to accomplish one or more organization tasks''(Powellet al., 2004).Therefore, a comprehensive definition of virtual teams may be taken as:  small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed knowledge workers whocoordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communicationtechnologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks (Ale Ebrahim et al.,2009). Nowadays, this definition have gained popularity as found in Wikipedia(wikipedia,2011). Virtual R&D team is a kind of virtual team that concentrate on the R&D tasks andleft:522px;to

Abstract Objective: This article provides a systematic review of the team knowledge literature and guidance for further research. Background: Recent research has called attention to the need for the improved study and understanding of team knowledge. Team knowledge refers to the higher level knowledge structures that emerge from the interactions of individual team members. Method: We conducted a systematic review of the team knowledge literature, focusing on empirical work that involves the measurement of team knowledge constructs. For each study, we extracted author degree area, study design type, study setting, participant type, task type, construct type, elicitation method, aggregation method, measurement timeline, and criterion domain. Results: Our analyses demonstrate that many of the methodological characteristics of team knowledge research can be linked back to the academic training of the primary author and that there are considerable gaps in our knowledge with regard to the relationships between team knowledge constructs, the mediating mechanisms between team knowledge and performance, and relationships with criteria outside of team performance, among others. We also identify categories of team knowledge not yet examined based on an organizing framework derived from a synthesis of the literature. Conclusion: There are clear opportunities for expansion in the study of team knowledge; the science of team knowledge would benefit from a

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are considered as an engine for economic growth all over the world and especially for developing countries. During the past decade, new product development (NPD) has increasingly been recognized as a critical factor in ensuring the continued survival of SMEs. On the other hand, the rapid rate of market and technological changes has accelerated in the past decade, so this turbulent environment requires new methods and techniques to bring successful new products to the marketplace. Virtual team can be a solution to answer the requested demand. However, literature have shown no significant differences between traditional NPD and virtual NPD in general, whereas NPD in SME's virtual team has not been systematically investigated in developing countries. This paper aims to bridge this gap by first reviewing the NPD and its relationship with virtuality and then identifies the critical factors of NPD in virtual teams. The statistical method was utilized to perform th 2. Virtual R&D teams and SMEs growth: A comparative study between Iranian and Malaysian SMEs [48.294%] Ale Ebrahim, Nader & Ahmed, Shamsuddin & Taha, Zahari (2010) Downloadable! This paper explores potential advantages of using virtual teams for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a comprehensive review on various aspects of virtual teams. Based on the standing of the pertinent literature, attempt has been made to study the aspects by online survey method in Iran and Malaysia. In both countries, SMEs play an important role in their economies, employments, and capacity building. Virtual R&D team can be one of the means to increase SMEs efficiency and competitiveness in their local as well as global markets. In this context, surveys have been conducted to evaluate the effects of virtuality to th

"European Journal of Scientific Research 34, 3 (2009) 297-307 Innovation and R&D Activities in Virtual Team Nader Ale Ebrahim 1, Shamsuddin Ahmed 1, Zahari Taha 1 (2009) Innovation plays a central role in economic development, at the regional and national level. In the competitive environment companies are obliged to produce more rapidly, more effectively and more efficiently in new product development, which is a result of research and development (R&D) activities. It is necessary for them to put together different capabilities and services with the goal, through cooperation between suppliers and customers, service providers and scientific institutions to achieve innovations of high quality. Depending on the type of industry, the type of business, the type of innovation and the strategic objectives that have been set, firms will regularly have to modify the way in which their R&D and innovation are organized. Nowadays, shift from serial to simultaneous and parallel working in innovation has become more commonplace. Literature's have shown that collaboration is as a meta-capability for innovation. By a comprehensive reviewing of literature this article after define virtual teams and its characteristics, addressing virtual environment innovation and the relationship to R&D activities. Finally conclude that innovation cannot be successful, unless the knowledge and information in the R&D project are effectively captured, shared and internalized by the R&D project's virtual team members. 1 : University of Malaya (UM) Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya Domaine : Sciences de l'Homme et Société/Gestion et management Sciences de l'ingénieur/Autre Mots Clés : Virtual team - Literature review - Innovation - Research and Development Liste des fichiers attachés à ce document : PDF Nader-_ejsr_34_3_02.pdf(58.1 KB) hal-00593360, version 1 http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00593360 oai:hal.archiv

Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team | BostInno - 0 views

" Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team July 11th, 2012 by Caroline McAlpine Posted in company culture, Management, teams, Virtual Worker Beehive Media +1 0 1 inShare When I arrived at Beehive Media last fall to take on my new role as the Client Services Director, one corporate behavior I had to quickly shed and transform was having historically only managed a core team face-to-face. Beehive Media's team is a virtual one - geographically dispersed in the greater Boston and New York areas, as well as Ukraine. Experts have studied virtual teams for the last three decades and from everything I've seen and read in the last six months, managing one is both an art and a science (sometimes a hair raising science - our CEO has no hair…coincidence?) A lot goes into managing a team across great distances, but with practice, a virtual team can be a great thing. When considering your virtual team, key questions arise such as when should we meet face-to-face? How will we communicate? What software solutions will help us manage and complete our work? How do you manage a virtual team's workload? When should we meet face-to-face? Convening a virtual team face-to-face makes complete sense; the real question to immediately ask is when and why. When you consider the stages of team development (organizational development) -forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (based on Bruce Tuckman's model)-it's most critical to meet as a team in the beginning when it's newly formed. It's important to meet early since people don't know each other. It's also an opportunity to create a team culture with norms, establish ground rules and expectations. Finally it's key to start to develop integral relationships among team members. Of course it's also key to meet face to face at critical points in a project - some things are better solved in person. Identifying these times is key and better to err on the side of meeting too often at the begi

"HAL : hal-00593360, version 1 Fiche détaillée Récupérer au format European Journal of Scientific Research 34, 3 (2009) 297-307 Innovation and R&D Activities in Virtual Team Nader Ale Ebrahim 1, Shamsuddin Ahmed 1, Zahari Taha 1 (2009) Innovation plays a central role in economic development, at the regional and national level. 1 : University of Malaya (UM) Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya Domaine : Sciences de l'Homme et Société/Gestion et management Sciences de l'ingénieur/Autre Mots Clés : Virtual team - Literature review - Innovation - Research and Development Liste des fichiers attachés à ce document : PDF Nader-_ejsr_34_3_02.pdf(58.1 KB) "

Virtual R&D Teams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Virtual R&D Teams From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search A virtual team (also known as a geographically dispersed team or GDT) is a group of individuals who work across time, space and organizational boundaries with links strengthened by webs of communication technology. Powell, Piccoli and Ives define virtual teams in their literature review article "as groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers brought together by information and telecommunication technologies to accomplish one or more organizational tasks [1]." Among the different definitions of virtual teams, the following concept is one of the most widely accepted definitions [2]: “Virtual teams are small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks” [3]. Virtual R&D team is a form of a virtual team, which includes the features of virtual teams and concentrates on R&D activities [4].
