A recent large-scale study has found that the more often students take courses with at least 40 pages of reading a week *and* 20 pages of writing in a semester, the greater their gains on the Collegiate Learning Assessment. So, all things being equal, these are good minimums. really good and relevant to our conversations in the department about standards,etc.

Helpful handout for how to write a thesis statement from "Writing for Sociology". I am finding it very useful for upper division students in my writing intensive courses.

This handout introduces you to the wonderful world of writing sociology. Before you can write a clear and coherent sociology paper, you need a firm understanding of the assumptions and expectations of the discipline. You need to know your audience, the way they view the world and how they order and evaluate information.

It's Harvard. It's a handout for undergrad senior theses. But, I think it is a good model of the kind of information we discussed preparing for our MA students on writing a thesis. I believe it has CC license so we can crib a bit. I'd love to see a VCU branded version of this for Sociology.
