This article discuses the importance of having a financial background. There is a lot of discussion about having mandatory class at the high school level, which will help students with their finances. It will also help students become more aware of what it involved in creating a budget. There is a lot of discussion on how personal finance should be taught.

The article discusses financial-literacy programs at universities and colleges in the United States. Programs like Texas Tech University's help its students master the basics of budgeting, saving, and not buying what they can't afford. These programs are especially important as colleges grapple with rising costs and an economic downturn in the country. The author states that financial literacy affects student retention, productivity, and mental health, and may also generate good will in a time when colleges are being criticized for repeatedly raising tuition, fees, and housing costs. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 18 Nov. 2010. This is an article that was the cover story. It was based on schools such as Texas Tech that have actual course at their institution that is based upon financial literacy and the knowledge of spending one's own money. Texas Tech is one of many schools that have a class like this one. The class in itself teaches students proper spending techniques. The purpose of the class is to teach students how to budget money, save when the time is right, and to buy only things or items that they can afford.

The food choices students in college make, could set them up for future health problems in the future. Research has shown that food served in dorms are comparable to food served in a fastfood restraunt. Fast food is attracting to college students because of a limited budget, easy access, and peer pressure because their friends are going to eat fastfood as well. Eating fast foods may have little impact on a teen or young adult's health in the short term; but more studies are showing that a poor diet during the teen and childhood years can set a teen up for health problems later '" including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Fast food may taste good now, but could be more costly later on.

It goes through recent history looking at things that have impacted the amount of influence of the arts. The influence of budget cuts is one issue discussed. Budget cuts lead to art teachers and programs being cut. In general the authors try to emphasize the benefits of the arts to individuals. They use a quote from Bill Gates at the beginning to start off the article and enforce this point.

According to this article there has been a decline in financial literacy over the past few years. More and more schools are starting to offer finance classes at the high school level. In order to ensure students make good financial decisions in their later years it is important that parents and teachers start teaching people about finances before they are teens.
