Equity benchmarks began steady Monday, with realty, and oil and gas shares leading early gainers. The Sensex was up 41 points at 19724 and the Nifty up 13 points at 5958. The benchmarks rallied around 4 percent each last week, but experts feel the pace of the uptrend could moderate as the market lacks fundamental triggers at this point. Hong Kong blue chips opened 10 points lower, but gains in Shanghai helped them soar above the 10-day moving average. The blue-chip Hang Seng Index rose 2.0%, and the index of Chinese companies gained 3.3% in moderate turnover.

Gold slid considerably today as a rising dollar, the result of a seemingly inevitable Greek default, made commodities less attractive. Only indirectly dependent on the strength of the dollar, miners experienced more moderate losses and even gains for some companies as gold bulls expressed their ongoing confidence.

For the week, China shares were not able to completely recover from the sharp drop caused by disheartening U.S. employment numbers last Friday.

The recent rally appears to be driven my invisible forces. Flat or pessimistic news regarding the global economy seems to inexplicably be driving the market upwards, but can it last?
