A Government security is a tradable instrument issued by the Central Government or the State Governments. It acknowledges the Government's debt obligation. Such securities are short term (usually called treasury bills, with original maturities of less than one year) or long term (usually called Government bonds or dated securities with original maturity of one year or more).

A 2% gap down triggered fears of another quick correction as talk of a Greek default grew louder, but the market held in all day before surging sharply higher into the close.

Investors sold-off stocks today as jobs growth last month supported the notion that the U.S. may be very likely heading into a recession, and the Fed may finally be forced to step in.

Stocks are up in mid-day trading today as investors are hoping the Federal Reserve will open up its tool box and provide the ailing economy some much needed assistance.
