The Shining Rock Wilderness in North Carolina is truly a hikers paradise. The crown jewel in the wilderness is the Art Loeb Trail, which traverses the peaks, balds and ridgelines for more than 30 miles and provides access to Cold Mountain, the mountain made famous by the recent movie.

For many hikers, a "bucket list" or "life list" just wouldn't be complete unless it included a rim to rim hike across the Grand Canyon. I was fortunate enough to do just that over the Memorial Day weekend in 1996 with three fellow hikers.

Each day, on average, there were 11.2 search and rescue (SAR) incidents in our national park system. Most are concentrated in just 5 park units. The most likely people to require a rescue are males, hikers and boaters.

After a long day on the trail, some/lots/most/all hikers like to kick back with a nice cold beer, preferably a craft or microbrew. The good people over at Blue Ridge Outdoors recently developed the Southern Appalachian Beer Guide to point us in the right direction after we step off the trail.

The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, also known as the Grand Canyon of the East, is one of the wildest, most rugged gorges in the eastern United States. It's also an outdoor paradise for hikers and backpackers.

The hike to Mount Rogers - the highest point in Virginia - is one of the best hikes east of the Rocky Mountains! Following the Appalachian Trail, you'll have outstanding panoramic views for most of the hike. You're also likely to see the wild ponies on Wilburn Ridge.
