For US Professional Engineers not registered with one of the Canadian engineering associations you will need to have your academic institution provide us with your transcripts and you will also need to provide us with the names and contact information of at least three references. Alternatively, you can submit your NCEES Record Book instead. Also note that if you are a US Professional Engineer but not registered elsewhere in Canada, you will need to pass the National Professional Practice Examination before you can become licensed as a Professional Engineer or Foreign Licensee with APEGGA.

If you are going to practice engineering in Alberta you must be licensed as a Professional Engineer or Foreign Licensee with APEGGA.

Engineers Canada has also negotiated a recognition agreement on full professional practice, the NAFTA Mutual Recognition Document, to support greater mobility for engineers from Canada, Texas and Mexico, and has developed a national register of qualified Canadian engineers as part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Engineer Register initiative. An implementation protocol to implement the NAFTA document is currently being developed. The APEC Register initiative sets out criteria for the creation of national registers of qualified engineers, which would facilitate the negotiation of bilateral mobility agreements between participating signatories.

If you have less than four years of work experience, then you must apply as an E.I.T (Engineer in Training). If you are applying as an E.I.T. you must meet two of the five licensure requirements which include Academics, Good Character and Reputation

What are the licensure requirements for internationally educated Engineers? Internationally Educated Engineers must apply to APEGGA for an evaluation of qualifications and, fulfill the following five criteria for licensure:                                                                                      Successfully complete the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE).            English Language Competency.                                                                                               Good Character and Reputation.                                                                                             Work Experience (including one year of Canadian work experience).                                                                                                                       Academics acceptable to the Board of Examiners. 

Engineers Canada received over $785,000 to improve the application process for engineers educated in other countries

In 2010, service standards were established so that internationally trained professionals in eight priority occupations, including engineers and nurses, can have their qualifications assessed within one year, anywhere in Canada. This year, the Government has started streamlining foreign qualification recognition for six more target occupations, including physicians and dentists.

Budget 2011 announced that Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Citizenship and Immigration Canada will test ways to help internationally trained professionals cover costs associated with the foreign credential recognition process, with specific details to be announced shortly.

Lukaszuk, Alberta’s Minister of Employment and Immigration, said the province is already starting to see labour shortages in some sectors such as the transportation and hospitality industries.

“There are companies that simply can’t find workers already,” he said. “There are sectors that are already showing inability to readily find employees at competitive price. And that will only escalate as time goes on.

GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN SUPPORTS LABOUR RECRUITMENT MISSION TO IRELAND Premier Brad Wall and Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris will participate in a labour recruitment mission to Ireland in March 2012. The delegation will be comprised of Saskatchewan employers and supported by the Government of Saskatchewan. Immigration staff will support employers who are actively making job offers in Ireland at career fairs in Dublin (March 3-4) and Cork (March 7) where more than 9,000 qualified candidates in fields including trades and construction, engineering and health sciences are expected to attend. "The New Saskatchewan offers jobs, a high quality of life, and a welcoming environment to newcomers," Wall said. "We look forward to telling our story in Ireland. Immigration is helping sustain our economic momentum and enriching our cultural diversity." "There is a tremendous pool of qualified people in Ireland who are actively seeking opportunities abroad," Norris said. "The Irish Economic and Social Research Institute estimates 75,000 Irish are expected to emigrate in 2012 as unemployment in the country continues to rise. This mission will connect Saskatchewan employers with qualified candidates who are seeking to emigrate." Twenty-two employers have committed to participating in the mission with more than 275 vacancies on offer. The personal touch This summer, Edmonton's economic development agency will conduct a marketing campaign in the U.S. to attract unemployed, skilled workers, taking along a contingent of oil sands employers looking for thousands of engineers, mechanics and welders. To sell the idea of moving to Canada, the recruiters will rely on a combination of the familiar “quality of life” pitch and a solid message about just how big Alberta natural-resource projects are. “No one really understands the order of magnitude in the oil sands,” says Mike Wo, executive director of the Edmonton Economic Development Corp. “We want them to understand it's a massive undertaking and there are literally, dozens and dozens of employers who would be thrilled to have them.” The agency is going so far as to fly in potential hires to show them what Edmonton is like. Pooling their resources, employers will cover the cost of group flights so that candidates can check out the city, from its housing and university to the quality of its golf courses.

Expedited Labour Market Opinion Application The Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Service Canada (SC) have put in place an Expedited Labour Market Opinion (E-LMO) pilot project to accelerate the application processing times for obtaining an LMO in Alberta (and British Columbia). Applications from employers who qualify to particiate in the E-LMO project will be processed approximately within five (5) business days.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a national strategy meant to help skilled workers and entrepreneurs from other countries gain permanent resident status in Canada more quickly.

program is run individually in each province. Collectively, the PNP aims to find permanent employment for immigrants in their area of expertise. However, each province has slightly different application criteria.

Alberta's version puts an emphasis on skilled workers who have offers of permanent, full-time jobs; recent foreign graduates of Canadian post-secondary institutions and semi-skilled workers in food and beverage processing, the hotel and lodging industry, manufacturing and long-haul trucking. There are also categories for tradespeople, engineers, designers or drafters with Alberta work experience, and farmers who want to set up or buy a farming business.

You may not have to write the Professional Practice Examination if: You have passed a similar examination in another Canadian Association/Ordre; or You are currently a professional member registered with another Canadian Association/Ordre prior to implementation of Professional Practice Examination.

The examination is written four times per year (January, April, July, October) in major centers in Alberta and in other centers in North America by special arrangement. With a 5-6 week processing time for final marks to be assessed as a pass or fail,
