  A machine for treating ore which comprises a furnace having an upright shaft, means for charging the shaft with ore, means intermediate the ends of the shaft for introducing hot gaseous products of combustion to heat the ore, means for varying the oxygen content and ternperature of the atmosphere in the shaft,zenith crushing plant means for supplying air for combustion, means for preheating air used for combustion by transferring heat from the heated charge, means for transferring the heated ore. into a quenching tank, and means for excluding oxidizing atmosphere from said ore during the transfer.
  
  A machine for treating ore which comprises a furnace having an upright shaft, means for charging the shaft with ore, a plurality of combustion chambers on the shaft having openings for discharging hot products of combustion intermediately of the ends of the shaft to heat the ore,ball mill machine means for controlling the oxygen content and the temperature of the atmosphere in the shaft, a quenching tank, means for transferring the ore from the shaft to the quenching tank, and means for preventing the ore from coming into contact with oxidizing atmospheres during the transfer.
  
  This invention relates to a new and improved grinding apparatus in which hydromechanical means are provided for forming a homogeneous pulp of predetermined density.It is an object of the invention to provide means for reducing mineral ores or other solid materials to more or less finely granulated particles which are held in suspension in a liquid which may be added to such material during the feeding thereof.It is a further object of the invention to provide means for progressively grinding the material under treatment and to remove such material from the grinding mill as soon as such material attains a certain predetermined maximum I; granular size.
