  I have done a search in the help pages, but can not find information to my question.
  What is the "Permalink" button on the left hand side of the Diigo screen used for? When I click the button I get a url.

  Permalink is used for sharing. You can send permalink to others and any recipients can see those bookmarks even they are private.
