  Throughout history, the Agora of Athens has been used as a market and as a public meeting place. It has also served as a gymnastic and theatrical arena. It was rare to see respectable women in an agora and it was forbidden for criminals to enter it before their trials. But it was a place where free men met and debated and transacted business. Having a tomb in the agora was considered to be the ultimate honor in Greece.
