In Australia, women's wages are set to rise dramatically with a landmark pay equity decision today. The national industrial relations tribunal, Fair Work Australia, has found that women in the health and community services industries suffer inequality in their pay rates and that this is at least partly based on gender discrimination.

Former Sex discrimination commissioner Pru Goward says any move to impose quotas for women on corporate boards would undermine women's rights.

Australia's sex discrimination commissioner Elizabeth Broderick "first went out hard publicly, talking about introducing quotas - 'the Q word' - for women on boards...Then she approached 12 powerful men she knew had a strong commitment to gender equality...She never mentioned the Q word again.
