Putting A Definitive End to Dilbert-Style Management - Steve Denning - RETHINK - Forbes - 0 views

So my question is this...Can you take care of the employees and not create a "country club" environment but create delighted customers? I think they have the idea flipped. I think you can definitely take care of the customers and never provide an environment for your employees. This is where leadership sets itself apart from management.

  • The following sections discuss several important aspects of leadership including a description of what leadership is and a description of several popular theories and styles of leadership. This article also discusses topics such as the role of emotions and vision, as well as leadership effectiveness and performance, leadership in different contexts, how it may differ from related concepts (i.e., management), and some critiques of leadership as generally conceived.

I just wanted to demonstrate the bookmarking features of Diigo. You'll see that I tagged the page ("definitions"), highlighted a section that I found useful ("The following sections...", which comes right from the Wikipedia page), and have added my own note (what you're reading right now).

quotes on leadership - 1 views

  •
This is a site with many quotes. The first one is: "To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves!'" --Lao-tsu
  •
I love that..."we did it ourselves!" What a great example of leading and encouraing others to be the best they can be without making it about the leader. A truly gracious leader will beam with pride from behind the scenes knowing that their job was done well and no "recognition" is needed.

Marcus Buckingham Interview - 0 views

  • Leaders don’t make more right decisions. They just make more decisions.
  • What sets real leaders apart is their ability to turn people’s legitimate anxiety about the future into confidence.
  • We need a leader to tell us: Who, precisely, do we serve? What is our core strength? Of the many things we can measure in our business, which one measure of success should we focus on? And, what specific actions can we take right now to improve our business?
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • you have to understand it through the impact a leader has on followers.
  • When leaders lead well, it’s because they’re able to rally people to a better future and make people spirited when they were previously anxious.
  • The message from most companies is that you should want to be a leader, and if you don’t there’s something wrong with you.
  • Leadership isn’t about that at all. Leadership is about finding the words, stories, and images that bring great clarity to people. And that’s just different from being a good manager. You could have both talents, but good managers don’t necessarily make good leaders.
  • Most leaders don’t see clarity as their primary job
  • A leader needs to be specific.
  •
Management Consulting News interviews Marcus Buckingham on the ideas and defining characteristics of leadership.

I've highlighted some aspects to the interview I think are most relevant to defining leadership.

25 Most Important Lessons I Give To Young Or Emerging Leaders - 1 views

  •
This was a good list of "lessons". I especially liked number 11: No one likes change but a baby. However, change is desperately needed. I think in our UMC Denomination some are afraid of change but that is what is desperately needed if we are to grow in the future. We need strong leaders to help us to change how we do "church" and become relevant for today!
