In the wake of the revolutionary war, the Americans on August 27th, 1776, engaged with the British in the Battle of Long Island. The British had been holding strong in Boston for a good year before George Washington and his troops seized the area for the Americans.
During the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, Molly, the wife of John Hays, tended to the wounded, bringing water. During the battle, her husbund was struck, and she took over the operation of the cannon. She continued travelling with her husband for the rest of the war, helping the soldiers wherever she could.
