The Battle of Long Island - (Part of the American Revolutionary War) The earliest known portrait of George Washington, (1st President of the United States In office April 30, 1789 - March 4, 1797) painted in 1772 by Charles Willson Peale, showing Washington in uniform as colonel of the Virginia Regiment. In the wake of the revolutionary war, the Americans on August 27th, 1776, engaged with the British in the Battle of Long Island. The British had been holding strong in Boston for a good year before George Washington and his troops seized the area for the Americans.
