iPhone version 4.0 is official! It's got all the goodies, multi-tasking, background GPS, background audio streaming (Pandora), background VOIP calls and even iBooks (thanks iPad). Apple has announced the upgrade but won't make it available to all the iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 3rd Gen users out there until sometime this summer. iPad will get the update in the Fall. Original iPhone and iPhone 3G users along with iPod Touch 1st/2nd Gen will get some features but not the multitasking (booooo). That's too bad for owners of older hardware but Apple has to cut them loose at some point to move forward.

Apple is right on schedule to release the next generation iPhone in summer of 2010. Unreleased iPhone hardware version 3,1 has been logged by PinchMedia this month in San Francisco. This means the company is already field testing hardware for the next model iPhone.

Talks between Apple and Verizon have been in the press for several days now, but recent reporting suggests the two may be discussing a pared-down version of the Apple iPhone and an Amazon Kindle-like "media pad," for release as earlier as this summer. But does Apple need the hassle of CDMA?

Summer is long over and lots hackers and geeks have spent a lot of time again behind their computers. The results are very interesting at times, like the just released first Linux OS port for the Apple iPhone.
