Fourth graders had trouble using some of the basic functions on a computer-based writing assessment, including drop-down menus, editing icons, the highlighter tool, and text-to-speech, according to a recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics. The results, which could be seen as a foreshadowing of the types of problems students might have with computer-based common-core tests in the spring, are part of a larger federal pilot study I wrote about last week. That study found that 4th graders can use computers to type, organize, and compose well enough to be assessed on their writing.

recently posed a question on my Teacher Garden Facebook fan page, asking for ideas of how to use QR codes in the classroom. While I was unable to obtain any more ideas, Lori over at Conversations in Literacy asked for some of my ideas, so I was propelled to do some more research over QR codes in the classroom. I was surprised by what I found!

Khan Academy lets you track your child's progress so you can support their individual learning needs. Signing up is completely free for you and your child. Get started right away here, or check out the instructions below for step-by-step screenshots of the sign-up process. As explained below, when you click "Parents, start here," the site will guide you through the process of creating both your account and your child's account. If your child is under 13, their account will have special privacy considerations.
